Foreword The awarding bodies have prepared new specifications to comply with revised GCSE criteria. The specimen examination papers and mark schemes accompanying new specifications are provided to give centres guidance on the structure and character of the planned question papers in advance of the first operational examination. It is intended that the specimen examination papers and mark schemes contained in this booklet will help teachers and students to understand, as fully as possible, examiners expectations of candidates responses to the types of tasks and questions set at GCSE level. 3 The Death of and Resurrection of Jesus Then they led him out to crucify him. As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus cross. They came to a place called Golgotha, which means, The Place of the Skull. There they offered Jesus wine mixed with a bitter substance; but after tasting it, he would not drink it. They crucified him and then divided his clothes among them by throwing dice. After that they sat there and watched him. Above his head they put the written notice of the accusation against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. Then they crucified two bandits with Jesus, one on his right and the other on his left. People passing by shook their heads and hurled insults at Jesus: You were going to tear down the Temple and build it back up in three days! Save yourself if you are God s Son! Come on down from the cross! In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and the elders made fun of him: He saved others, but he cannot save himself. Isn t he the king of Israel? If he will come down off the cross now, we will believe in him! He trusts in God and claims to be God s Son. Well, then, let us see if God wants to save him now! Even the bandits who had been crucified with him insulted him in the same way. 3 Healing a Roman Officer's Servant When Jesus entered Capernaum, a Roman officer met him and begged for help: Sir, my servant is sick in bed at home, unable to move and suffering terribly. I will go and make him well, Jesus said. Oh no, sir, answered the officer, I do not deserve to have you come into my house. Just give the order, and my servant will get well. I, too, am a man under the authority of superior officers and I have soldiers under me. I order this one, Go! and he goes; and I order that one, Come! and he comes; and I order my slave, Do this! and he does it. When Jesus heard this, he was surprised and said to the people following him, I tell you, I have never found anyone in Israel with faith like this. I assure you that many will come from the east and the west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast of the Kingdom of heaven. But those who should be in the Kingdom will be thrown out into the darkness, where they will cry and grind their teeth. 3 Jesus Identity Six days later Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain, where they were alone. As they looked on, a change came over Jesus, and his clothes became shining white whiter than anyone in the world could wash them. Then the three disciples saw Elijah and Moses talking with Jesus.
