Perhaps they don't realize what an extraordinary banquet is being offered. Perhaps they haven't maintained their side of an ongoing relationship with the king. Perhaps they do not wish to sit down with some of the other invited guests. The problem isn't with the king for whom this wedding feast is a priority, but with the invited guests who put their own "feast" ahead of the king's. Which is the feast we choose? Shepherd God, you call us to the messianic banquet of your Son Jesus. May we accept your invitation without hesitation and run to the feast with joy. From the Pastor's Desk St. Veronica Book Club Dear St. Veronica Parishioners and Book Club Members, Purpose of the Book Club: I m delighted that you have decided to join St. Veronica Book Club. Welcome! The purpose of this creative step in the parish is simple: for us to encourage one another to read books (mostly spiritual) that are nourishing and refreshing for the mind and soul. Isn t it true that given our busy lives we do not allocate time necessary for soul-refreshing books? It s our hope, therefore, that our book club will serve this noble purpose. First Step: Our first book on the list is: The Gift of Peace by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. Please read this book during October. Our first meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday November 07, 2011 Venue: Pastoral Center Think about two or three things that may have appealed to you in this book for our informal, friendly sharing. No highfalutin theories! Logistics: The important thing to do is to acquire a copy of the book immediately. You may buy a new book or a used book, or borrow from a library, or order online (Amazon, etc.). If you need assistance in ordering The Gift of Peace online (and other books on the list in the order in which they appear), please approach your family and friends. In our first meeting we might also explore if anyone within the group might volunteer to order books for others. The blurb on the cover of The Gift of Peace reads: In the final two months of his life, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin made it his mission to share his personal reflections and insight in this book, The Gift of Peace. Using as a framework the previous three years, which included false accusations of sexual misconduct, diagnosis of cancer, and return of cancer after months in remission, he tells his story openly and honestly. At the end of his life, he was at peace. He accepted his peace as a gift from God, and through this book, he shares that gift with the world. The Gift of Peace is part of the Cardinal s pastoral legacy; through this book his ministry lives on. Book Club members! New Roman Missal Translation and Sung Mass Parts Last Sunday our Music Ministry introduced the new sung Gloria at some of the Masses. Also, the Alleluia was previously introduced in late September. These new responses are all part of the New Roman Missal Translation. After carefully reviewing many Mass settings available, we have elected to adopt the Christ the Savior mass setting by composer Dan Schutte. We will be making the text of these mass parts available for your ease in learning the words. As a preview, below is the text for the refrain of our new Gloria. Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace on earth, peace to people of good will. Family Connection Last week s Scripture Crossword Solution Today's Gospel reminds us that God invites all of us to his kingdom. How do we respond to this invitation? In theological terms, God has granted us free will to accept or reject salvation. The parable of the wedding feast reminds us that God desires our wholehearted acceptance of his invitation to salvation. As you gather as a family, discuss what you consider appropriate attire for various occasions. For example, if your family were invited to a neighbor's barbecue, what would you wear? If you were planning to attend the symphony, what might you wear? If invited to an evening wedding, what might you wear? Discuss how our preparations for an event and our choice of attire indicates the importance and value we place on the occasion. In today's Gospel, Jesus uses this metaphor to talk about the kingdom of heaven.
