We traveled via our new car complete with many safety features and a must have GPS. I believe this GPS saved us from having many driving disputes...my husband typically never wants to ask for help when it appears we are lost. The GPS voice that tells you just what to do to stay on the right road was much calmer than mine when I knew we made a wrong turn. My husband heard "recalculate" many times and it did not seem to bother him! I find there are many similarities between a GPS and my relationship with God. As a matter of fact, I believe GPS stands for God's Protective Service. I merge off the beaten path at times. When I decide to go my own direction, God steers me back with loving nudges and makes me "recalculate" my intentions. If I stay close to God through daily prayer and listen to what God is telling me, it is much easier to not be lost or afraid. When driving in the darkness of night, God offers the bright lights of love. I even dislike driving in fog; it is so hard to see where you are going. Likewise, God does not like my stumbling, foggy moments either. At these times praying for forgiveness clears my mind. God even offers rough road driving protection through the power of the Holy Spirit. Praying for gifts such as wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord makes for a smoother life highway. Using God's Protective Service, I have learned it is never too late to "recalculate" life's travels. Recalculating does involve acknowledging God's grace and power in one's life. When the road is filled with too many bends and turns, brake and listen to your GPS. ~Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator Health & Wellness Living Healthy is a Prayer MEN S HEALTH Most men need to pay more attention to their health! Compared to women, men are more likely to: smoke and drink, make unhealthy or risky choices and put off regular checkups and medical care. There are also health conditions that only affect men, such as prostate cancer and low testosterone. Many of the major health risks that men face -- like colon cancer or heart disease -- can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis. Screening tests can find diseases early, when they are easier to treat. Do you know the following facts about Men s Health? At 35 start having regular cholesterol checks. At 50 start being screened for colorectal cancer. If you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, get screened for diabetes. The most important things you can do to stay healthy are: exercise, eat a healthy diet, drink alcohol only in moderation, stay at a healthy weight, avoid tobacco, get recommended screening tests and take preventive medicines if you need them. Signs of depression include feeling down, sad or hopeless for 2 weeks and having little interest in or taking no pleasure from doing things you normally like to do. If you are between the ages of 65 and 75 and have ever smoked more than 100 cigarettes, you should be screened for abdominal aortic aneurysm. Have the pneumonia vaccine after turning 65. Aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. (Adapted from Healthfinder.gov)

5 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time-September 23, 2018 Worship and Music Column A Piece of My Heart part 1 This was published online in April of 2018. Over the next few weeks, I will share my journey of healing through one of our greatest treasures in Green Bay: The St. Gianna Clinic. As you read this over the next few weeks, you may think, this is really personal or how is this worship related? I can assure that yes, it is personal, and I am beyond happy to share this journey and if it helps even one other person, it s worth it. We are called to walk with those who are ill, struggling and without hope and sometimes we need to hear others journeys to continue to grow on our own. I am 25 years old and have had my fair share of medical issues over the years. Beginning at puberty, my menstrual cycles have been excruciating, but always shrugged off as normal. When I was 19, I went on the pill, something I thought might help with the pain I endured every month. While it helped with the pain a little, it made me violently ill throughout each month. After a year on the pill, I stopped taking it due to a continuous period that became tiresome coupled with the sickness. The pain seemed like a better way to go. At 20, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, which has been an ongoing battle of trying to find the right combination of medication to keep my flares at bay. This disease has been the focus of my life for the past five years. This diagnosis has taken me through six different medications, 9 steroid injections, left wrist surgery, right wrist surgery, countless MD appointments and blood draws and many hours of physical therapy. Meanwhile, the pain from my periods became worse and worse, but I did not feel like I was in a position to focus on anything other than my RA. At 21 during my senior year of college at the University of Portland, I joined RCIA and entered into Full Communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. I knew the Catholic teaching on contraception, but I did not have a knowledgeable insight into NFP and women s health from a Catholic standpoint. I thought that contraception could help me with my pain, because not being on contraception was worse.
