THE PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL PROJECT: UPDATE AND REFLECTION ON ADORATION I am so happy to report that the Perpetual Adoration Chapel Project continues to move along. Some of the key, practical things are well underway such as the preparation of the chapel and the fundraising to cover expenses. A vital part of the project is to ensure that we have enough people to be adorers 24/7. Nearly two hundred people from the two counties (Columbia and Greene) expressed an interest in doing this when the survey was taken back in the late Spring. This is wonderful and encouraging! The plan is to begin the actual perpetual adoration on the feast day of the North American Martyrs (October 19). Bishop Scharfenberger will be with us to dedicate the Chapel at the 9.00 am Mass on Sunday,???? The chapel will always be open for people to come and pray and also to pray and light candles as they did before. Although the chapel will be the Perpetual Adoration Chapel, it is still very much also the Victory Chapel! Another benefit will be that we will be able to use the Chapel for daily Mass. In the winter, we have used the Sacristy and this has worked well enough, but it will be great to have use of the Chapel for Mass. It might be helpful to remind ourselves or even inform ourselves about what adoration is and why it is so important. In many parts of the world, adoration of the Lord, present in the Eucharist, has always been part of the fabric of prayer and devotion. Many churches and cathedrals in Europe, for example, have a perpetual adoration chapel. For some of us though, this is not such a familiar pattern and form of prayer. Perhaps it had just dropped out of use in this part of the world and was not part of our growing up in church. Adoration is a simple, yet vital form of prayer. Of course, there are many forms of prayer, but adoration has a very special and wonderful flavor. In adoration, we just spend time before the Lord who is present body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist. In this sense, adoration is something very close and intimate: we have the Lord truly with us. Yes, Jesus is present to us in many ways and indeed in every moment of our lives. But in adoration, there is a very special and particular closeness and our encounter with Jesus in adoration is immediate rather than mediated. This is why Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) said that one hour before the Blessed sacrament is better than a 1000 years of human glory! Adoration is also a chance to give back to the Lord. As Psalm 114 (115) says; how can I repay the Lord for His goodness to me? Sometimes, perhaps when we or someone we love have been in a crisis, we have made some sort of promise to God. Adoration is a time when we can make good that promise. Sometimes folks quite understandably say, but I am not sure that I will get anything out of giving up an hour just to be before the Blessed Sacrament. Well, hopefully, we do get something out of it; but prayer and our relationship with the Lord is not just about what we get out of it. No, as with anyone we love, we also want to love back! That having been said, there are many, many blessings from adoration. Do google perpetual adoration fruits and you will be amazed what comes up. Blessings include: peace or a new sense of purpose, a more lifegiving prayer life, a deeper spiritual life for families or the parish, an increase in vocations, the return of people to the practice of their faith, help in finding a way forward during a personal crisis etc. etc. What does one do during adoration? After all, an hour seems like a long time to be in prayer! This is a great question and has almost as many answers as there are people who adore. Some read the Scriptures or pray the rosary, others have a prayer list of intentions, others sit before the Lord and reflect on their troubles or joys, others just sit in silent prayer and yet others do all of the above. In our Chapel, to help us, there will be a whole library of prayer books and other aids. For me, I simply could not live and function as a priest without the daily hour of adoration before the Lord. So, as our Adoration Chapel Project becomes a reality, thank you for all your support (and patience!). If you have not signed up yet, please do think about it and take the chance. To quote the Scriptures again, the Lord s hand will not be shortened for you, your family and your friends. Fr. Anthony
