NEW FRONTIERS ACHIEVING THE VISION OF DON BOSCO IN A NEW ERA St. John Bosco High School Celebrating 75 Years 1940-2015

Premise When asked what his secret was in forming young men into good Christians and honest citizens, Don Bosco said, With kindness and love I try to win over these friends of mine for the Lord." Bosco thought differently than other educators of his time. He believed that reason, religion and loving kindness was essential to form the whole person. This was a new idea; a fundamental belief system different from the punitive, regimental approach of a traditional education. As a result, his method of education challenged the status quo, creating a new, pioneering educational pedagogy the Preventive System. St. John Bosco High School s distinctiveness as a Catholic college preparatory school is a result of the Preventive System. Don Bosco s model for the Salesian educational enterprise, The Oratory a home, a school, a church, and a playground, has served as the structure to support the formation of generations of young men who are driven by their Catholic faith, equipped with the power of their intellect, and molded by loving kindness to become generous servant-leaders and transformers of the world. In 2008, a global assembly of Salesians of Don Bosco (General Chapter 26) laid out a clear plan to renew Don Bosco s educational approach to meet the needs of youth in a new era. In the section titled New Frontiers, the Salesians discussed the need to be sensitive to the signs of the times and with a spirit of initiative and continual flexibility, evaluate activities; renew them and create new ones 1. Faithful to the Salesian tradition, St. John Bosco High School is constantly challenged to re-interpret and re-enliven Don Bosco s educational vision in every generation and circumstance, according to the requirements of the contemporary situation and the needs of young people. During a time of rapid societal change and fierce global competitiveness, when traditional social norms, educational structures, and faith-based values are being challenged to be more relevant, St. John Bosco High School returns and renews the vision of Don Bosco to form young men into good Christians and honest citizens in a new century. Purpose To define St. John Bosco High School s path towards meeting the needs of young men today and of future generations, a plan is required. This document a strategic framework, establishes the objectives to build on Don Bosco s educational vision for the future. It reinforces our identity through the articulation of the vision and mission from which we operate and the characteristics of the student we seek to form. Further, it will serve as the reference point for all institutional planning, the establishment of goals, tactics and measures of progress to actualize Don Bosco s vision in a new era. Mission and Vision In keeping with the Salesian mission and vision: St. John Bosco High School is a distinctive Catholic college preparatory community in the Salesian tradition educating young men with reason, religion and loving kindness to become men of purpose. We are committed to the formation of good Christians and honest citizens characterized by faith, intellect, leadership, and citizenship in the image of Jesus Christ. We strive for excellence in Catholic male formation through intellectual, artistic, spiritual, and physical advancement, becoming the school of choice for young men in Southern California. 1 GC26 (C.41)

The Bosco Man Don Bosco s Preventive System established that reason, religion and loving kindness is essential to forming the whole person. We seek to actualize Don Bosco s educational vision in a new era by defining the characteristics of the young man we seek to form The Bosco Man. He is an empowered man of purpose characterized by: Faith: A man of integrity, character and compassion, formed in the Catholic tradition. Intellect: A collaborative problem-solver; professional, informed, mature and prepared for life. Leadership: A decisive leader who takes initiative and practices good judgment in service to others. Citizenship: A kind, selfless contributor to his community and an advocate for social justice. Upon graduation, The Bosco Man will be an outstanding product of the Salesian educative model, advancing the legacy of the St. John Bosco brotherhood and the message of Jesus Christ. He will be prepared for the academic rigors of college and the opportunities of a professional career. Above all, he will be formed into a faith-driven leader of service for his family and his community. Institutional Objectives To realize the vision of Don Bosco and advance the mission of St. John Bosco High School, we will honor its rich heritage while pursuing a pioneering future by focusing on the following objectives: The Bosco Man Forming Good Christians and Honest Citizens o Men of Purpose Formalize and implement a four-year male formation program, utilizing the Preventive System to develop every student with the core values of the Bosco Man Faith, Intellect, Leadership, and Citizenship. Cultivate every student s God-given talents by expanding leadership opportunities in academic, artistic, athletic, and service endeavors. o Relevant and Rigorous Curriculum Align curriculum with the Common Core Catholic Identity Standards established by the National Catholic Education Association, strengthening rigor and relevancy to position students for success in college and career in the Catholic tradition. Develop academic pathways for advanced study in bio-medical science, engineering, entrepreneurship and media arts. Pursue partnerships to enrich student learning via professional internships and dualcredit with a college or university. o Student Centered Instruction Advance instructional pedagogies, such as direct, project-based and blended instruction, designed to increase academic, artistic, and athletic outcomes specifically for young men while assessing learning outcomes. Empower students with skills and technology to manage learning in both collaborative and individual learning environments. Identify and implement new methodologies to increase communication, collaboration and professionalism among students, improving skills necessary to complete locally and globally.

Operational Vitality Increasing Competitiveness and Fiscal Sustainability o National and Regional Distinction Achieve National Blue Ribbon recognition by the U.S. Department of Education. Increase visibility through recognition of academic, artistic, athletic and co-curricular successes and Catholic community service programs to extend student distinction, institutional reputation and respond to community needs. o Fiscal and Faculty Sustainability Assess and calibrate the school s business plan based on economic and demographic forecasting models, adapting to new market conditions and identifying new resources to ensure long-term fiscal sustainability. Retain, attract, and develop high quality faculty and staff, maximizing their potential to meet the diverse learning needs of every student. Expand outreach efforts to prospective students regionally and internationally, maintaining a diverse and well-rounded student body. o Excellence in Institutional Stewardship Advance competitiveness by optimizing business, marketing, and development strategies and tactics. Increase local middle school student and faculty engagement and professional development, extending Bosco s reach academically and professionally. Advancing the Mission Cultivating Fundraising, Modernization, and the Endowment o Increase Access Bolster the support of the tuition assistance program, improving accessibility to the school for students with financial hardship. Build the endowment with the goal of reducing financial hardship as an obstacle to attending Bosco. o Expand Fund Development Promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, developing and prioritizing donor relations and fund development among all staff members. Expand existing institutional fundraising models such as major giving, foundation and corporate relations, major events, appeals, and planned giving, identifying new giving opportunities to support school programs. Establish a foundation to increase access to all forms of giving. o Modernize Facilities Develop a campus master plan to construct state-of-the-art facilities to meet student needs and growth. In partnership with the Board of Directors and Salesians, establish the necessary foundation to launch a capital campaign. o Strengthen the Brotherhood Increase alumni engagement through social media and online platforms, events, business and social networking, and other activities to enrich the brotherhood, increase support for the school and sustain the rich legacy of our Catholic identity and heritage.

The Path Forward The achievement of Don Bosco s vision requires more than a conceptual framework. To fully realize the objectives of New Frontiers, an execution plan an Educative Pastoral plan is necessary. As a result, the school s 2015 Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) accreditation action plan will serve this function. The purpose is to ensure long-term institutional sustainability by making strategic investments to attract and retain students and faculty, energize our donor base and promote the highest standard of institutional honor, integrity, character. The objectives established, along with their corresponding goals, are to be realized by the 2020-21 school year. These goals will be specific, measurable, attainable, results-oriented, and time-bound. Tactics to achieve each goal will be articulated in the plan. Ultimately, all major functions of the school (i.e. academic, ministry, finance, development, marketing, athletics and formation) will have their objectives and goals outlined in the plan, creating a unified agenda for the school s future.
