ISBE Speaking and Listening Kit, 2016 Collabora ve Conversa on Sugges ons & Sentence Stems The first standard in the Speaking and Listening Strand conveys that students par cipate in collabora ve conversa ons about ageappropriate, grade level topics and texts with peers and adults to build on others ideas and to express their own clearly and persuasively. There are a wide variety of instruc onal strategies teachers can employ to promote collabora ve conversa ons. The following list is by no means exhaus ve, but may provide some ideas. Brainstorm the rules of discussion with students; then model appropriate and inappropriate conversa ons. Model and expect use of complete sentences for responses. Encourage elabora on of ideas and mul ple exchanges among students. Employ ample wait me so students feel comfortable thinking about their responses before sharing them Use a variety of grouping pa erns for conversa ons. Partnerships and small groups of four six students provide more opportuni es for all students to contribute. Sor ng S cks provide one way to group students. Employ strategies for collabora ve conversa ons, such as Think Pair Share, and Give One, Get One. Use graphic organizers and note taking strategies to help students collect their ideas prior to sharing in discussion groups. Encourage students to add to their notes as they engage in conversa ons to keep track of addi onal ideas and thoughts. Instruct students in the use of sentence starters or frames to help facilitate sharing their thinking.
