Fig. 7.1.2) The Christianized Greco-Arabic Cosmos The synthesis of ancient Greek, or rather of Greco-Arabic learning and Christian theology during the High Middle Ages had produced a strong consensus among cosmogra- 13
phers of the Renaissance regarding the shape and structure of the cosmos. The classical cosmos of Aristotle is evident in the basic architectonic structure shown here in a woodcut from Hartmann Schedel s Liber chronicarum (Nuremberg, 1493): geocentric, spherical, finite, unique, closed, and full (i.e., a plenum). The terrestrial realm is distinguished from the celestial realm both in regard to composition (earth, water, air, and fire subject to continual transmutation below, unchanging aether above) and rules governing their respective motions (transient, straight line, natural motion in the terrestrial realm, unending uniform circular motion in the celestial realm). The concentric rings represent the planetary orbs (from the Earth outward): the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. The stellar sphere is marked with the signs of the zodiac, while the two spheres beyond are additions to the classical picture to account for the precession of the equinox and the sphere of water above the firmament recorded in Genesis. Beyond the last sphere of the physical cosmos is the Empyrean, the immaterial, extracosmic place where god enthroned in majesty rules over both the angles above, arrayed in traditional nine orders, and his creation within.
