Jesus Calling The Great Galilean Ministry: Part 1

Throughout this Period Jesus continued to gather to Himself those who longed to be His disciples. It is important to distinguish between 3 distinct callings.

3 Distinct Callings 1. The call to believe in and acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah To accept Jesus claims, issued to all men 2. The call to follow Jesus as a disciple To assist Jesus, to identify with Him 3. The call to be one of His apostles To go with the authority of Jesus, bearing special revelation

*Let the Reader Understand* These are not separate categories of belief. I am not suggesting that the acceptance of Jesus the Messiah did not include the acknowledgement of Him as Lord. The point is simply that in the Gospel narratives there is a distinction to be made between those passages where Jesus is issuing an invitation to accept His claims and those passages where He is extending a call to assist Him in His work.

Calling Level 1 Matthew 7:13-14 Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

Calling Level 2 Matthew 4:19-20 And He said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Matthew 9:9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector s booth; and He said to him, Follow Me! And he got up and followed Him.

Calling Level 3 Mark 3:13-15 And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons. *Notice the setting of the selection of the apostles.

The Ministry Begins Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mark 1:14b-15 Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel. Luke 4:14-15 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.

John 4:46-54 The son of a nobleman healed at Cana.

Rejection at Nazareth: Luke 4:16-30

New Home: Matthew 4:13-16 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: 15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles 16 The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.

4 Fishermen: Matthew 4:18-22 18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him. * Mark 1:16-20

A Demoniac Healed on the Sabbath: Mark 1:21-27 *Luke 4:31-37

Mark 1:28 Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.

Mark 1:29-31 Peter s Mother-in-law Healed *Matt. 8:14-17; Luke 4:38-41

Mark 1:32-34 32 When evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed. 33 And the whole city had gathered at the door. 34 And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.

The Great Galilean Ministry Throughout these 18 months, from his headquarters at Capernaum, Jesus methodically carried His message to all parts of Galilee on at least 3 extensive preaching tours. The Purpose: To enable Jesus to carry to every village the message that Messiah had appeared and that the Kingdom of God was indeed at hand.

1 st Preaching Tour Begins Mark 1:35-39 35 In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there. 36 Simon and his companions searched for Him; 37 they found Him, and said to Him, Everyone is looking for You. 38 He said to them, Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for. 39 And He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons. *Matthew 4:23-25; Luke 4:42-44

The Particulars The Message: Luke 4:43 I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose. The Method: Matthew 4:23 Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. The Reaction: Matthew 4:25 Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.

Luke 5:1-11 4 Fishermen Become Fishers of Men

Luke 5:12-4 12 While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean. 13 And He stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, I am willing; be cleansed. And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He ordered him to tell no one, But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them. *Matt. 8:2-4; Mark 1:40-45

Luke 5:15-16 15 But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.

Mark 2:1-12 A Paralytic Lowered Through The Roof *Mt. 9:1-8; Lk. 5:17-26

Matthew 9:9-13 The Call of Matthew, the Tax Collector *Mk 2:13-17; Lk 5:27-32

Concerning Fasting: Matthew 9:14-17 14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, asking, Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast? 15 And Jesus said to them, The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. 17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved. *Mark 2:18-22; Luke 5:33-39

John 5:1-47 Jesus attends a feast in Jerusalem, where he heals a lame man on the Sabbath at the Pool of Bethesda and defends Himself before the Pharisees.

John 5:18 18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

Jesus 4 Witnesses 1. 5:33 You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 2. 5:36 the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish the very works that I do testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me. 3. 5:37 And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. 4. 5:39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me

Two Primary Methods 1.Engaging in controversy with the religious leaders 2.Ministering to crowds through preaching and miracles

Sabbath Controversy: Mark 2:23-28 23 And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? 25 And He said to them, Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; 26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him? 27 Jesus said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. *Matthew 12:1-8; Luke 6:1-5

And Again: Mark 3:1-5 1 He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. 2 They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. 3 He said to the man with the withered hand, Get up and come forward! 4 And He said to them, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill? But they kept silent. 5 After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, Stretch out your hand. And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. *Matthew 12:9-14; Luke 6:6-11

Mark 3:6 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.

Ministry in Galilee: Mark 3:7-12 7 Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and a great multitude from Galilee followed; and also from Judea, 8 and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon, a great number of people heard of all that He was doing and came to Him. 9 And He told His disciples that a boat should stand ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crowd Him; 10 for He had healed many, with the result that all those who had afflictions pressed around Him in order to touch Him. 11 Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, You are the Son of God! 12 And He earnestly warned them not to tell who He was. *Matthew 12:15-21

Choosing the 12: Mark 3:13-19 13 And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. 14 And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, 15 and to have authority to cast out the demons. 16 And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), 17 and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, Sons of Thunder ); 18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him. *Luke 6:12-16

Concerning the Apostles Office 1. Jesus specifically gave these men the title apostles (Lk 6:13) 2. Jesus gave these men power to perform miracles of healing and deliverance (Mk 3:15) 3. Jesus gave them a 3-fold purpose: 1. to be with Him (Mk 3:14) 2. To go in His stead, as His fully authorized representatives, and thus to multiply the scope of His ministry (Lk 10:1) 3. To later function as the foundation of the church (Eph 2:20)

Matt. Mark Luke Acts 10:2-4 3:16-19 6:14-16 1:13 Simon Simon Simon Peter Andrew James Andrew James James John James John John Andrew John Andrew Philip Philip Philip Philip Bartholomew Bartholomew Bartholomew Thomas Thomas Matthew Matthew Bartholomew Matthew Thomas Thomas Matthew James A. Some Observations: 1. Though differently arranged, the first four names are the same on all of the lists. 2. The 4 lists all seem to be divided into three groups of four; the names in each group are identical in all lists, though arranged differently. 3. The 1 st name in each group is the same in all 4 lists (Peter, Philip, James A.) 4. Simon the Canaanite is another name for Simon the Zealot; Thaddeus is another name for Judas of James; Bartholomew may be Nathanael in John s gospel. 5. Judas Iscariot is the last name in all lists where he is included.
