Power of Prayer: Taking up the Sword of the Spirit in Prayer Hebrews 4:12: For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 1. A Neglected PRIESTHOOD, why the body of Christ is weak. I Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Exodus 28:29 So Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment on his heart, when he goes into the Holy Place, to bring them to regular remembrance before the LORD. 30 And in the breastpiece of judgment you shall put the Urim and the Thummim, and they shall be on Aaron's heart, when he goes in before the LORD. Thus Aaron shall bear the judgment of the people of Israel on his heart before the LORD regularly. The Duty of a Priest A. The Jewels of the Priests Breastplate was worn over their heart. The Priest carried the family names (their Identity and inheritance) on their hearts before the Lord interceding for them to become who God had called them to 1

be. A Priest carries not only who a person is now but who they are to becoming in Christ in their hearts. B. The Breastplate of Judgment was a reminder of God s Righteousness. The priest was to intercede for the Nation(s) that they would reflect the righteousness of God. C. The Urim & Thummim: represent the Light and Perfection of God as revealed through His Will. A priest is to remember God s light of truth and His perfection of His people through grace as they intercede on behalf of others. D. The Priest was to regularly carry the needs of the people before the Lord out of love. bear the people on his heart before the Lord V30 Hebrews 4:14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Intercessory Prayer is priestly ministry, and one of the most challenging teachings in the New Testament is the universal priesthood of all Christians. As priests, appointed and anointed by God, we have the honor of going before the Most High on behalf of others. This is not optional; it is a sacred obligation and a precious privilege of all who take up the yoke of Christ. Richard Foster o Jesus is our perfect High Priest. We are not left alone in this interceding work of ours. Our little prayers of intercession are backed up and reinforced by the eternal Intercessor. Paul assures us that it is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us (Rom. 8:34). As if to intensify the truth of this, the writer to the Hebrews declares Jesus an eternal priest after the order of Melchizedek who always lives to make intercession (Heb. 7:25). o The Position of High Priests pre-supposes that there must be other priests serving under Him. God s plan all along was to raise up His people to be priests that would intercede on behalf of others. Listen to the words God said to Moses about Israel. 2

Exodus 19:5: Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; Exodus 19:6: and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel. By means of Intercessory Prayer God extends to each of us a personalized, hand-engraved invitation to become intimately involved in laboring for the spiritual well-being of others. Reflect on these scriptures concerning our role as intercessory priests. I Peter 2:4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. I Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Revelation of John 1:4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelation of John 5: 9 And they sang a new song, saying, Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth. o Believers are expected to fulfill their privileges and responsibilities as a priest before the Lord. INTERCEDE (Pray for others as you should pray for yourself) I urge that prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 1 Tim 2:1 o As priests we must bears the needs of others before the Lord. 3

We are responsible before God to pray for those God brings into our circle of nearness. With Samuel of old we say, I Samuel 12:19: And all the people said to Samuel, Pray for your servants to the LORD your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king. I Samuel 12:20: And Samuel said to the people, Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. I Samuel 12:21: And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. I Samuel 12:22: For the LORD will not forsake his people, for his great name's sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you a people for himself. I Samuel 12:23: Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. Intercession is done individually; it is also done corporately. Jesus promises to be present in great power whenever the community of faith is truly gathered in his name (Matt. 18:20). When enough faith, hope, and love are found in any given community, the blessings are multiplied, for then organized, corporate, intercessory prayer is possible. When the prayer warrior intercedes he forgets his personal needs and focuses all of his faith and prayer-attention on others. To intercede is to mediate. It is to stand between a lost being and an almighty God, praying that this person will come to know about God and his salvation. As Edward Bauman explains in Intercessory Prayer, When we pray for others we do not stand with outstretched hands hoping to receive something for ourselves. We stand at God s side, working together with Him, in the task of redeeming others. But intercession is much more than merely praying for others. Interceding is engaging in actual battle.5 There is a certain spirit of authority that must accompany a good deal of intercession. This thought is amplified by A. J. Gordon, We have authority to take from the enemy everything he is holding back. The chief way of taking is by prayer, and by whatever action prayer leads us to. The cry that should be ringing out today is the great cry, Take, in Jesus great Name! This is what Moses did when Joshua led the army of Israel out to fight the Amalkites. As long as Moses held up his arms in intercession Israel prevailed. If he lowered them the Amalakites prevailed. So Aaron and Hur came and helped hold up Moses arms in prayer. 4

This is our calling as well. Every believer is a Priest of the Most High God. We are called to lift the arms of other believers and to stand our watch in wielding the Sword of the Spirit, praying God s Word over the circles of influence God has given us. NATIONS (Pray for the Nations and their leaders to Know Christ) All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed. Rev 15:4 o As priests we must carry the Nations needs before the Lord, remembering God s righteous judgment and interceding on the peoples behalf as Jesus intercedes for us. EMPOWER (Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and others with Grace to live for God) I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 o As an under priest we recognizes that it is only through Jesus and the Holy Spirit that we can accomplish our work. Abiding in the empowerment of Jesus The prayer of faith, like some plant rooted in a fruitful soil, draws its vtality from a life which has been brought into conformity with the mind of Christ. It is subject to the Divine will This is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us (1 John 5:14). o It is restrained within the interest of Christ Whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son (John 14:13 o It is instructed in the truth If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you (John 15:7). o It is energized by the Spirit Able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us (Eph. 3:20). o It is interwoven with love and mercy And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any; that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses (Mark 11:25). o It is accompanied with obedience Whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight (1 John 3:22). o It is so earnest that it will not accept denial Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto MacIntyre, David (2010-11-29). Pray for EMPOWERMENT from God to accomplish all that He has written for you and called you to do. LISTEN (Be still before God so that He may speak to you) Be Still and know that I am God Psalm 46:10 o As priests we must continually seek God s will and wisdom. As the priests of old waited for the Urim and Thummim to reveal God s direction so we must wait for the light and perfection of the Holy Spirit to speak. Best friends are always good listeners. If we truly desire to be friends with the Lord, we must learn the secret of listening. Not only did Jesus say He would enter the open door of a person s heart, but He promised to eat with that person as well Revelation of John 3:20: Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. To eat with means to have fellowship. Much of our praying consists of asking instead of a two communion and fellowship. Prayer often becomes one-sided and self-centered. Our prayer should be a conversation, one in which we listen as much as we speak. Listening implies confidence that God truly desires to speak to us. It also serves to move our devotional life still further from an emphasis on self. Of necessity, much of prayer must take place in silence because much of prayer concerns the believer seeking divine guidance. Not only will God reveal how to pray effectively, if we will listen, but He will reveal how to live effectively. Eastman, Dick (2002-10-01). Hour That Changes the World, The: A Practical Plan for Personal Prayer (Kindle Locations 1509-1511). Baker Book Group. Kindle Edition. Listening is where the Prayer Sentinel receives His call to action and the affirmation that He is indeed with us in the battle. Psalms 46: 10 Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah Putting Intercession into practice. Colossians 1:3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 6

since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit. 9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 2. The PRACTICE of Intercession PRAISE Thank God for the person. V 3 We always Thank God.. how often do you thank God for someone? How often do you thank God for those who you struggle with? A difficult boss, a wayward child, a contentious neighbor? We are to give thanks for others. Especially for those who are believers. Make this a practice of Intercession. PETITION Ask God to give them grace to grow in love and be strengthened by eternal hope. V 4-5 Pray for their love to increase Pray for them to be strengthened by our eternal hope. ew all need this so much. We live in a world where hope is scarce. We need to be strengthened. And reminded by God s Spirit of an eternal perspective. When we pray the Holy Spirit ministers to those in need and speaks truth into their hearts and minds. PURPOSE Pray for them to know God s will and wisdom. He has written them into His Story, they have a part that only they can live out. V 9 Pray for them to not only know God s will but to be built up to accomplish it. PERSONALITY Pray that they will become who God made them to be. Pray that their walk may be praiseworthy as it reflects their identity in Christ. V 10 Walk worthy of who Jesus purchased you to be. He has clothed the believer with His righteousness. Pray that they will know that, and live it out. This is 7

the secret to victory. It is not just doing. It is rather how God s grace adds life to our BEING in Christ that produces actions that are worthy of praise. PRODUCTIVITY Pray that they will please God by bearing fruit and fulfilling their part in God s Story. V 10 All of us desire for our life to count and make a difference. Pray that their life will be fruitful. By the way as you see fruit tell them. Encourage them in their walk. Let them know you see Jesus in them! POWER Pray for God to strengthen them with endurance, patience and a thankful heart. V 11 Praying for someone to be strengthened with power for endurance with joy is absolutely critical. Proverbs 18:14: A man's spirit will endure sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear? When we are praying for someone s endurance undergird that prayer with praying God s Word for their joy as well. Otherwise their spirit will be crushed and they will be open to the attacks of the enemy. PROMISES Pray God s promises over their needs and their lives. God s promises are their inheritance as saints in light. V 12 INSERT Praying God s Promises. Pray that they will know the inheritance God has given them Pray they will experience deliverance Pray they will be free to enjoy God s presence Pray they will truly understand their complete forgiveness in Jesus Pray that they will live out God s purpose for them in His Story. PLEASURE Pray that God will fill them with joy and with the grace of knowing their sins are forgiven and that they are adopted to live as children of God through Jesus redemption of their lives. V11-14 God meant for us to enjoy life. He designed us for pleasure but a pleasure that is found through Him not one that excludes Him. Pray blessing on their life, on their relationships, on their walk with God. Blessing are huge. We all need God s blessing. Intercession should always include praying for blessing. 8

In some cases we pray for blessing that comes through difficulty. When a person has rejected Christ, it is appropriate to pray that they will not find rest apart from Him. To pray that they will come to the end of them selves so they can live in peace with God. The purpose of this prayer is for their ultimate blessing as well. We are bearing them over our hearts as a priest. Carrying them in the same way that Jesus has carried us over His heart. Believer don t neglect your priesthood. Pray diligently for others. Intercession requires a decision. It is not a natural interest to pray in this way. But it is our calling. Let me suggest that you keep a Prayer journal for intercession. Or pray the directory of your church family. Together, today let us commit ourselves to the powerful ministry of intercession. 9
