September 23, 2018 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH #481/PAGE 4 ~PASTOR S NOTES~ [A] common turning to the east during the Eucharistic Prayer remains essential. This is not a case of doing something accidental, but of what is essential. Looking at the priest has no importance. What matters is looking together at the Lord. It is not now a question of dialogue but of common worship, of setting off toward the One who is to come. What corresponds with the reality of what is happening is not the closed circle but the common movement forward, expressed in a common direction for prayer. (Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) We can still use a few more teachers for Religious Education. It is only one day a week for an hour and a half as required by the archdiocese. It is rewarding to know that you have helped someone on the road to salvation. For those who use electronic giving for the Sunday and Holy Day collections, I want to thank you for switching to Parish Giving from Parish Pay. However, there are still a few who haven t changed over to Parish Giving. In this week s bulletin there is a flyer with information on how to do it. If you haven t switched yet, please do so as soon as possible. You can work directly with the people at Parish Giving. They will help you cancel Parish Pay and sign up for Parish Giving. It is important for our bookkeeping that all electronic contributors use only Parish Giving. I am trying hard to clean up the accounting system I inherited to make it conform to proper procedures. It is important to make sure your money is being accounted for in the right way. St. Matthew, Patron Saint of Accountants and Tax Collectors It has been said that the Catholic Church goes through trying times every 500 years. The first five centuries saw the church persecuted (3 million martyrs in 300 years) and also afflicted with early heresies that even denied that Jesus was divine. About 500 years later there was the division between the church in the east and the church in the west. In the sixteenth century we had the protestant revolt against the Catholic Church that divided Christendom and began the deterioration of western civilization. Today we have the errors of modernism, condemned by St. Pius X, blossoming with the acceptance of sexual immorality especially homosexual predation of young men by many of the clergy. It is a tragic time but it is also a time, as during other tumultuous eras, for saints to be made. We must speak out against the evils pervading our world and church; we must hold firm to ALL the teachings of our Catholic Faith; and we must pray and do acts of penance in reparation for sins, particularly those of homosexual predation that *cry to heaven for vengeance. (*Catechism of the Catholic Church no. 1867) No one can be a bystander. We have been confirmed by the Holy Spirit to be able to say with St. Paul, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7) In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
