Creation - Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth. Upper Elementary www.calvarywilliamsport.com www.calvary-kids-pages.com www.kids.djswilliamsport.com Teacher s Devotion: Psalm 19:1-6 The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun. It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding. It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race. The sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat. Nehemiah 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you. The Lord God Elohim created. Used 2,500 times in the Old Testament, the name Elohim reveals the mighty strength of God. El is the Hebrew word for "strength," while "alah" or "oah" means "faithfulness." God's faithfulness begins afresh each day (Lamentations 3:23). God is always fresh, never stale. We can depend on it! The Bible is not a scientific textbook, but a book about faith. It does not tell us how the heavens go, but how to go to heaven. It also tells us who makes the heavens go and who upholds them "by the mighty power of his command" (Hebrews 1:3). Elohim meets us in Genesis. In the beginning of days and nights, flowers and trees, fish and mammals, he tells us by his name that he is the Creator of all. God is strong enough to make myriad universes and faithful enough to keep them all spinning safely at the right speed. And what does this name mean to me? It gives me confidence. It tells me that if God made the world, he can make my world spin around with a little more order than I've managed to create in it! It gives me something-someone-on whom I can depend. If God is perfect faithfulness, renewing his pledge to me morning by morning, I can go to sleep in peace evening by evening, Elohim can be known; Elohim can be trusted; Elohim is there!

Bible Story Genesis 1:1-2:3 In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day. And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning-the second day. And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning the third day. And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. God made two great lights the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning the fourth day. And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." So God made the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." And there was evening, and there was morning the fifth day. And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God made man in his own image, in the image of God he made him; male and female he made them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground everything that has the breath of life in it I give every green plant for food." And it was so. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Discussion Questions: Talk About It! 1. In what book of the Bible do we find the creation story? (Genesis) 2. How many days did it take God to create all that He made? (6 days) 3. Complete the exercise below:

Memory Verse Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth. Craft For a craft you could make the sun, moon, planets, and stars hanging on a piece of yarn from a clothes hanger. Most of these can be drawn on a piece of paper colored and cut out and then paper punch a hole in it for a piece of yarn. If you have time, you can use newspaper and masking tape rolling the newspaper into a ball and then taping it to make the planets.

Children s Devotion Something So Good! Have you ever opened up a gift you received for your birthday or at Christmas time and were so overjoyed because you were hoping and telling your friends and family for a long time you wanted that particular item? Well, God must have felt the same kind of overjoyment when day after day, He created, He stepped back took a look and said, it is good. Have you ever thought of God as having feelings like you and me? Well God does! We know that God loves (John 3:16), and He sees (Genesis 1:4, 10, 18, 31), God can even sympathies (feel our pain) with us because, Hebrews 4:15 says For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin. So, the next time we approach God in prayer or think about God, don t think of God as someone who is far away in heaven. Because, the God we worship and serve is right here, right now, listening, caring, walking with us day after day because He loves us! So talk with Him and walk with Him, looking up to Him as your Father.
