Over a hundred and fifty years ago, a man named Rufus Ellis served as the preacher at the First Church in Boston. After his death, his sermons were published in the mid-1850 s. I have a copy of the sermon book from which I have found much inspiration. I have relied extensively from the 350- page book to write a short message that I think is appropriate to share as we begin a new Sunday School year. I hope the following has something worthwhile for students, parents and children alike. If you have any spiritual and moral wealth, the making of a true and beautiful and immortal character, anything in your being which is pure, honorable and lovely, do not risk it; once gone, what have you to get it back? Here, in our beloved Sts. Vartanantz, you will find the priceless jewel of faith, the true guardian of the soul. Seek first what the religion of Jesus was. It was truth about God and man Divine Love and human trust, the justness and the tenderness of our heavenly Father, His unfailing Providence, His unwariness seeking for souls, His readiness to forgive, His thirsting for our love and companionship, His kingdom of righteousness and peace and blessedness. It is a light upon our life, might we only have the grace to walk in it as He walks in it. Understand from our Badarak, that in living and dying and rising, Jesus is at once our brother and our lord. Learn to heed that voice which, at least as a whisper, we have all heard, and which beseeches us before all else to follow God in the way of duty and love. Receive in this House, not in figure but really, the body and the blood of Christ, remembering that he died for our transgressions. See that every human life has a meaning and is accomplishing an end which is altogether divine. The meaning we are ever unfolding, this end we are ever fulfilling; and while we shall still have our likes and our dislikes, our human preferences and ambitions; while we might still have chosen other work - yet underneath all these surface thoughts and feelings and tastes and distastes shall be a great, deep contentment, a most sweet and abiding peace, the very peace of God; yea, a blessedness even on earth from the persuasion that we are worshiping, not some creature of our own poor intellect, or some figment of our imagination, but the most holy will of the Father, clearly made known to us. Realizing the same, even in tears of bitterness of spirit, we yield to sweet submission which sayeth, not my will- but Thine be done. Strive to trust as Christ trusted, to pray as Christ prayed, to believe in the life everlasting as Christ believed and hold as our own, with a clasp which no man can break, a true faith. His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting and the arms that were stretched wide upon the cross are opened for all mankind. Remember, also, that if our Bible opens with a sad story of paradise lost, it closes with sweet glad visions of Paradise Regained. Ask yourselves, what good can I do for the world, for the love of Him who made it. For I am one of the Father's children and if I am a true child, His interests are nearer to my heart that any other needs. His interests are identical to truth and right, with Justice and Mercy. The law of Thy lips says the Psalmist, is better unto me that thousands of gold and silver. For a true Christian is not one in name only, but in deed; is one who every day of life prays unto the Lord and submits quietly and cheerfully to His clear pronounced will. Such is way for all the teachers of our Sunday School, each of whom so faithfully volunteer their time and efforts that our children might come to know and love their Creator. Again, this year, Sunday School is led by Ms. Mary, whose generosity of spirit should serve as an inspiration to all of us. Likewise, much praise is due to all of the parents who wake the kids, oversee the brushing of the teeth and hair, and bring the children to Sunday School week in and week out - all with faith that one day, their son or daughter will say, I get to go to Church rather than I have to go to church. As a graduate of the Sunday School program and father of past and current students, I have come to understand that without God equals without hope. From my own life experiences, I have come to see how courage and glad expectations with life rise and sink in man s heart as he shares or fails to share the Savior s life in the Father. I want our children to be taught that they have access to their Heavenly Father - that they are, each of them, of His household, a habitation of God through the Spirit - and that they may hold communion with him in our
Church, in the blessed dialogue of prayer. I in them and Thou in me sayeth the Lord. The roots of our Armenian faith are matured in our Sunday School; A Faith that will grow to regard true success as a divine endorsement of Character. They will be educated that one day of faith and patience, of trust and obedience, is worth an eternity of half-redeemed worldliness, and that the little that the truly righteous person may have is greater than all the treasures of the world. I have every confidence that this coming Sunday School year will continue a great tradition of exercising our children in Christianity and giving them a real faith in it- and love for it. May each of us become rich in faith and glad in hope. Welcome back and have a great year!
