Overview of the Bible New Testament Part 2 By David Dann

Overview of the Bible The Bible tells the story of how God created man and of God s purpose for man. The Bible answers the most important questions of life. The Bible tells us about the problem of sin.

The Bible Tells Us About Sin What is Sin? What are the consequences of sin? Sin separates man from God. M A N SIN G O D This is spiritual death! (Ephesians 2:1)

The Bible Tells Us About God s Plan God s plan was to send Jesus, the Son of God, to take away sin so that man could have a relationship with God again. God would use Abraham to carry out his plan to save mankind from sin. God made three promises to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3). Nation (v. 2). Land (v. 1). Blessing for everyone through his family (v. 3).

God s Plan & Abraham God would use Abraham to carry out his plan to save mankind from sin. God made three promises to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3). The rest of the Old Testament deals with the fulfillment of these three promises! The third promise refers to the fact that Jesus would be Abraham s descendant.

The Three Promises God fulfilled his first promise to Abraham by making his descendants (Israel) into a great nation of people. God fulfilled his second promise to Abraham by giving Abraham s descendants (Israel) possession of the land. God fulfilled the third promise when Jesus came to take away man s sins.

God Had A Plan! Jesus would take away man s sin. M A N SIN G O D This is spiritual death! (Ephesians 2:1)

God Had A Plan! Jesus would take away man s sin. M A N Together with G O D This is spiritual life! (Ephesians 2:1)

The Birth Of Jesus Christ The Old Testament concluded by looking forward to the coming of Christ. The New Testament begins by In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and announcing the birth of Christ. He comes the Word from was the God And correct the family Word line. became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the But, he is also the Son of God. Jesus existed from eternity as one who is God before he came to earth as man! Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:1, 14).

The Teaching Of Jesus He came to fulfill the Old Testament. He challenged the Jewish religious leaders. He presented the highest moral standard the world has ever seen. His teaching resulted in conflict with the Jewish leaders!

Christ s Church Jesus said he would build his church. And Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:16-18).

Christ s Church Jesus said he would build his church. Church A called out assembly of people. (A church is not a building!) Christ s church did not exist yet while he was on earth. He said that he would build it in the future. And, it would be built based upon the confession that he is, the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Jesus Foretells His Death Jesus told his disciples that he would soon be killed. From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day (Matthew 16:21).

Jesus Foretells His Death Jesus told his disciples that he would soon be killed. He will go to Jerusalem. The Jewish leaders will cause him to suffer. He will be killed. He will be raised from the dead the third day following his death.

Jesus Foretells His Death Jesus told his disciples that he would soon be killed. Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up (Matthew 17:22-23).

Jesus Foretells His Death Jesus told his disciples that he would soon be killed. He will be betrayed. He will be killed. He will be raised from the dead the third day following his death.

Jesus Foretells His Death Jesus told his disciples that he would soon be killed. Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again (Matthew 20:18-19).

Jesus Foretells His Death Jesus told his disciples that he would soon be killed. He will be betrayed to the Jewish leaders. The Jewish leaders will condemn him to death. The Jewish leaders will deliver him to the Gentiles (non-jews) to be killed. He will be mocked, scourged and crucified. He will rise from the dead the third day. The disciples did not understand.

Jesus Enters Jerusalem The religious leaders wanted to destroy Jesus. But the common people welcomed him to the city like a king. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their garments on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road So the multitudes said, this is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee (Matthew 21:7-8, 11).

Jesus Enters Jerusalem The religious leaders wanted to destroy Jesus. But the common people welcomed him to the city like a king. The leaders rejected him. But the common people considered him a prophet of God.

Jesus Enters Jerusalem The Jews had turned the temple into a place of business. Jesus corrected their error. Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of those who sold doves (Matthew 21:12).

Jesus Enters Jerusalem The Jews had turned the temple into a place of business. Jesus corrected their error. This made the religious leaders even more angry with Jesus!

Jesus Authority Is Questioned The Jewish leaders question Jesus about the source of his authority. Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority (Matthew 21:23).

Jesus Authority Is Questioned The Jewish leaders question Jesus about the source of his authority. This is a good question. We should always demand to know the authority for what is practiced in religion. Jesus had already proven that his authority came from heaven! But the Jewish leaders refused to believe it.

The Plot To Kill Jesus The Jewish leaders devised a plan to kill Jesus. Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him (Matthew 26:3-4).

The Plot To Kill Jesus The Jewish leaders devised a plan to kill Jesus. Judas becomes involved in the plan. Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you? And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him (Matthew 26:14-16).

The Plot To Kill Jesus The Jewish leaders devised a plan to kill Jesus. Judas becomes involved in the plan. Judas was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. But he chose to turn against Jesus for money.

The Lord s Supper Jesus explained the Lord s Supper to his apostles before his death. And as they were eating Jesus took bread, blessed it and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, Take, eat; this is My body. Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:26-28).

The Lord s Supper Jesus explained the Lord s Supper to his apostles before his death. The unleavened bread is symbolic of his body, which would be offered as a sacrifice for sin. The fruit of the vine (grape juice) is symbolic of his blood, which would be shed for the remission (forgiveness) of sins. He would bring about a New Covenant between God and man. The Lord s Supper would become a key part of the worship of the church.

Jesus Is Betrayed & Arrested He takes his apostles to a garden to pray (Matthew 26:36). Judas leads a mob to arrest Jesus. And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people (Matthew 26:47).

Jesus Is Betrayed & Arrested He takes his apostles to a garden to pray (Matthew 26:36). Judas leads a mob to arrest Jesus. Jesus is arrested. His disciples run away (Matthew 26:56).

Jesus Trial Before The Jews The Jewish leaders put Jesus on trial and try to find a reason to put him to death. Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none (Matthew 26:59-60).

Jesus Trial Before The Jews The Jewish leaders put Jesus on trial and try to find a reason to put him to death. Jesus confesses that he is the Christ, the Son of God. And the high priest answered and said to Him, I adjure You by the living God that You tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus said to him, It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven (Matthew 26:63-64).

Jesus Trial Before The Jews The Jewish leaders put Jesus on trial and try to find a reason to put him to death. Jesus confesses that he is the Christ, the Son of God. The Jewish leaders decide that Jesus Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You? (Matthew 26:67-68). deserves to die for claiming to be the Son of God (Matthew 26:65-66). They mock him and beat him.

Jesus Trial Before Pilate The Jewish leaders do not have authority to execute a death sentence on Jesus. Israel is under the control of the Roman Empire at this time. So, they bring Jesus to the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate (Matthew 27:1-2). The Jewish leaders want the Roman Governor to go along with their plan and put Jesus to death.

Jesus Trial Before Pilate Pilate knows that Jesus is an innocent victim. For he knew that because of envy they had delivered Him (Matthew 27:18).

Jesus Trial Before Pilate Pilate knows that Jesus is an innocent victim. But Pilate allows the Jewish leaders to control him. Pilate said to them, What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ? They all said to him, Let Him be crucified! Then the governor said, Why, what evil has He done? But they cried out all the more saying, Let Him be crucified! (Matthew 27:22-23).

Jesus Trial Before Pilate Pilate knows that Jesus is an innocent victim. But Pilate allows the Jewish leaders to control him. He knows Jesus is innocent, but he gives in When to the Pilate desires saw that of the could Jewish not leaders. prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it (Matthew 27:24).

Jesus Trial Before Pilate Pilate knows that Jesus is an innocent victim. But Pilate allows the Jewish leaders to control him. He knows Jesus is innocent, but he gives in to the desires of the Jewish leaders. Pilate sends Jesus to the Roman soldiers to be beaten and executed.

Jesus Is Executed The Roman soldiers scourge Jesus (Matthew 27:26). They ridicule and mock him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him saying, Hail, King of the Jews! Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head (Matthew 27:29-30).

Jesus Is Executed The Roman soldiers scourge Jesus (Matthew 27:26). They ridicule and mock him. They crucify him (Matthew 27:35). The Jewish leaders continue to mock him Likewise the chief priests, also mocking with while he is dying. the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him (Matthew 27:41-42).

Jesus Is Executed The Roman soldiers scourge Jesus (Matthew 27:26). They ridicule and mock him. They crucify him (Matthew 27:35). The Jewish leaders continue to mock him while he is dying. Finally, Jesus dies on the cross. Jesus, when He had cried out again with a loud voice, yielded up His spirit (Matthew 27:50).

Jesus Is Buried A rich man comes to bury the body of Jesus. Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him (Matthew 27:57-58).

Jesus Is Buried A rich man comes to bury the body of Jesus. Joseph prepares the body for burial and places it in a new tomb. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed (Matthew 27:59-60).

Jesus Is Buried A rich man comes to bury the body of Jesus. Joseph prepares the body for burial and places it in a new tomb. At the request of the Jewish leaders, Pilate places a Roman guard unit in front of the tomb (Matthew 27:62-66).

Jesus Is Resurrected Jesus said he would rise from the dead on the third day following his death (Matthew 20:18-19). Resurrection rising from the dead The third day after Jesus died and was buried, his tomb was empty!

Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. But the angel answered and said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you. So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word (Matthew 28:1-8).

Jesus Is Resurrected Jesus said he would rise from the dead on the third day following his death (Matthew 20:18-19). The third day after Jesus died and was buried, his tomb was empty! Jesus was raised from the dead on the first day of the week (Sunday). He appeared to his disciples during 40 days following his resurrection (Acts 1:3).

Jesus Gives His Apostles A Mission The apostles will be sent to preach the message of Christ everywhere. Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:18-20).

Jesus Gives His Apostles A Mission The apostles will be sent to preach the message of Christ everywhere. And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16:15-16).

Jesus Gives His Apostles A Mission The apostles will be sent to preach the message of Christ everywhere. The message of salvation through Christ would be sent to everyone. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He Jesus told the apostles to wait in Jerusalem will not speak until on the His Holy own Spirit authority, would but come whatever He hears He will speak; and He will to guide them in their teaching. tell you things to come (John 16:13).

Jesus Gives His Apostles A Mission The apostles will be sent to preach the message of Christ everywhere. The message of salvation through Christ would be sent to everyone. Jesus told the apostles to wait in Behold, I send the Promise of My Jerusalem Father upon until you; the but Holy tarry Spirit in the would city of come Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high (Luke 24:49). to guide them in their teaching.

Jesus Gives His Apostles A Mission The apostles will be sent to preach the message of Christ everywhere. The message of salvation through Christ would be sent to everyone. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8). Jesus told the apostles to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit would come to guide them in their teaching.

Jesus Ascends To Heaven Forty days after his resurrection from the dead, Jesus returned to the Father in heaven. And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy (Luke 24:50-52).

Jesus Ascends To Heaven Forty days after his resurrection from the dead, Jesus returned to the Father in heaven. Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven (Acts 1:9-11).
