Temple Sinai Presents: Israel 2.0 Led by Rabbi Hannah Goldstein June 20 July 1, 2018 (As of 12/26/17) Day 1: Wednesday June 20, 2018: DEPARTURE We depart the United States on our afternoon flight to Israel. Day 2: Thursday June 21, 2018: WELCOME TO ISRAEL! We arrive in Israel and transfer on own to our hotel in Tel Aviv for check in. This evening, we enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant with members of the Temple Sinai Family Tour group. Day 3: Friday June 22, 2018: ISRAEL S 70 th ANNIVERSARY This morning we mark Israel s 70 th anniversary by exploring the cutting-edge Taglit Innovation Center for a glimpse into Israel s high-tech advances in the fields of science, medicine, security and space. We visit the interactive exhibitions and continue with a meeting with one of Israel s young entrepreneurs. Next, we visit one of the projects run by Eco Peace Middle East, including a possible meeting with Gidon Bromberg. This evening, we participate in Kabbalat Shabbat services with the Temple Sinai Family Tour group, followed by Shabbat dinner together at our hotel.
Day 3: Saturday June 23, 2018: SHABBAT SHALOM! This morning, through Beit Daniel, the progressive congregation in Tel Aviv, we visit Old Jaffa for a co-existence tour along with the Family Tour group. This experience brings together a Jewish and Arab tour guide to explore the mixed city of Jaffa, where Arabs and Jews live side by side. Tracing the different historical narratives, we explore the possibility of creating a common future and shared society. Free time for lunch and an afternoon on own at the beach, relaxing at the pool or exploring Tel Aviv. OPTIONAL AFTERNOON: We join the Temple Sinai Family Tour and visit Bialik Street for a walking tour through part of the White City to see the Bauhaus architecture and get a peek into the lives of some of Tel Aviv s most significant residents of years gone by, including author Chaim Nachman Bialik and artist Reuven Rubin. OR Hear stories from the early days of Tel Aviv during a guided walk through the quaint streets of Neve Tzedek, the first neighborhood built outside the walls of Old Jaffa and one of the trendiest areas of today s modern city. Spend the evening at leisure discovering the City that Never Sleeps and enjoying dinner on own as Shabbat comes to an end. OPTIONAL: Cultural event, such as the symphony, dance or sports (to be finalized closer to departure separate cost). Day 4: Sunday, June 24, 2018: THE ISRAELI LEFT Today, we delve deep into Elifelet, an organization dedicated to supporting refugee children in South Tel Aviv. Elifelet s vision is to save refugee children from the suffering in which they are entrapped, by ensuring their physical and emotional wellbeing, advancing their development and facilitating their adjustment to the Israeli school system. We stop for lunch at a restaurant opened by a refugee, paying cash directly to help support their entrepreneurial endeavors. The State of the Israeli Left: We meet with Stav Shaffir, the youngest female Knesset member in Israel s history, and leader in the tent protests. We receive an update on the labor movements in Israel. We enjoy a meeting with a fellow from Alliance for Israel s Future.
Enjoy an evening at leisure to discover Tel Aviv and enjoy dinner on own. Day 5: Monday June 25, 2018: COASTAL OUTREACH Breakfast and check out of our hotel. We depart Tel Aviv and begin traveling north. We get an insight into local Arab culture at Umm El Fahem Art Gallery with founder and director, Said Abu Shakra. Next, we are inspired at Yemin Orde, where youth at risk find a caring, supportive environment within which to grow. Upon arrival in Haifa, we meet with Edy Kaufman, peace and human rights activist (or meeting with mayor of Haifa pending availability). We check in to our hotel and have time to relax and enjoy dinner on own. This evening, we enjoy a discussion organized by Sikkuy, a shared organization of Jewish and Arab citizens working to implement full equality on all levels between the Arab Palestinian and Jewish citizens of Israel. Founded in 1991, Sikkuy works with the government, local authorities and the public to achieve far-reaching change in government policy toward Arab citizens. Overnight in Haifa ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Day 6: Tuesday: June 26, 2018: NORTHERN PERSPECTIVES Breakfast and check out of our hotel. This morning, we visit the Progressive hub in Haifa, the Leo Baeck School and Community Centers. We drive to a Druze village atop the Golan Heights for an opportunity to meet with young Druze men that serve in the IDF or young Druze women studying at university. They offer a unique perspective of Israel for us to consider, especially given the many family connections they have over the border in war torn Syria. We continue to Safed, where we visit Ziv Hospital, which has quietly been at the forefront of treating refugees from Syria. We hear from doctors at the hospital about this amazing cross-border medical assistance. We travel south to Jerusalem. As we near completion of our ascent to the City of Gold, we stop atop Mt. Scopus to take in two viewpoints demonstrating the compact size of the country. On one side, we see the Old City of Jerusalem, with its ancient walls and shining Dome of the Rock. On the other side we see all the way down to the Dead Sea and across to neighboring Jordan. We offer a shehecheyanu and a motzi to celebrate our arrival. We check in to our hotel and spend the evening relaxing and enjoying dinner on our own. Optional: Dessert and Learning: Join us for a Jerusalem in context lecture, featuring Professor Dave Mendelson from HUC.
Day 7: Wednesday June 27, 2018: OLD CITY/EAST JERUSALEM This morning, we meet with a leader at New Israel Fund/Shatil and will spend time with several grantees. We continue with a tour of Ir David (City of David) with Emek Shaveh, and Israeli NGO that works to defend cultural heritage rights and protect ancient sites as public assets. While in the City of David, we discover the archaeological wonders that date back to the time of King David. Later this afternoon, we take a geopolitical tour in east Jerusalem with Ir Amim, an organization that will teach us about the social, economical and political issues affecting life in Jerusalem among several religions. OR (possible alternative afternoon): We set out on a fun Segway tour, discovering the different neighborhoods and sites throughout Jerusalem. (optional additional cost) Dinner on own this evening. Day 8: Thursday June 28, 2018: A DAY IN HEBRON & THE WEST BANK Today, we drive to Hebron, where we ll visit the Tomb of the Patriarchs, Tel Rumeida and Beit Hadassah on a tour of the West Bank with a member of the community (security permitting). We enjoy lunch together in Hebron. Breaking the Silence leads us on a tour of Hebron, allowing us an unmediated encounter with the reality of military occupation. Along the way we see House of Contention (the new settlement point since 2014), Shuhada Street and meet with non-violent Palestinian activists. We visit the Shorashim-Roots-Judhur grassroots organization in Gush Etzion, that brings together Palestinians and Israeli settlers in dialogue and reconciliation, including a meeting with founders Ali Abu Awad, a former Palestinian militant who spend years in Israeli jails, and Shaul Yudelman, a religious Jewish settler. Upon our return to Jerusalem, we enjoy tea and a debriefing at the American Colony Hotel. Evening at leisure and dinner on own.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 9: Friday June 29, 2018: PLURALISTIC JERUSALEM This morning, we meet with Reshut Harabim- Public Square, an organization that brings together progressive non-profits in Israel. We visit for Academy for Liberal Israel with Hillel Ben Sasson. We head to Machane Yehuda, where we take in the sights, smells and sounds of the market and enjoy lunch here. This afternoon, we take part in a pre-shabbat preparation workshop with Rabbi Michael Melchior, Orthodox former member of the Knesset, known for his outreach to more progressive streams of Judaism. As the sun begins to set, we participate in Kabbalat Shabbat services at Kol Haneshama, followed by Shabbat dinner with the Temple Sinai Family Tour group at Notre Dame Rooftop restaurant. Day 10: Saturday June 30, 2018: B NAI MITZVAH CEREMONY Today we join the Temple Sinai Family group to celebrate our B nai Mitzvah in the beautiful Persian gardens at Hebrew Union College (HUC) Mazel tov! We enjoy Shabbat lunch at Beit Shmuel together. Optional: The Poetry of Jerusalem: From the psalms to Yehuda Amichai, we walk through the neighborhoods of Yemin Moshe and Abu Tor and explore how Jerusalem was viewed by generations of poets, those who never set foot in the holy city as well as those for whom it was a lifelong home. This evening, we enjoy a festive farewell dinner with our friends from the Temple Sinai Family Tour, as we recall all that we have experience together on this journey. We transfer to Ben Gurion Airport for our overnight flight back to the United States. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Day 11: Sunday, July 1, 2018: WELCOME HOME! We arrive back in the United States this morning.
