A Note from our Pastor My Dear Friends! The "First Sunday after Easter", which is designated in "The Liturgy of the Hours and the Celebration of the Eucharist" as the "Octave Day of Easter", was officially called the Second Sunday of Easter after the liturgical reform of Vatican II. Now, by the Decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the name of this liturgical day has been changed to: "Sunday of Divine Mercy. Pope John Paul II made the surprise announcement of this change in his homily at the canonization of Sr. Faustina on April 30, 2000. There, he declared: "It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church, will be called 'Divine Mercy Sunday.' " Since the canonization of St. Maria Faustina, a Polish nun who died in 1938, and the universal recognition of DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY by the Church in 2000, this devotion has been greatly spread across the world. Jesus promised to St. Faustina Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment (Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, nn. 300.) On a side note, I want to personally thank all those who helped with our Church cleaning after the 11:00 AM Mass on Palm Sunday! I was told that the crowd that gathered was much larger than it has been in recent years - that IS AWESOME! It is things such as this seasonal cleaning that not only bring together many in the parish and get the church cleaned and ready for those who visit our parish for the Easter Celebrations - but it reminds all of us how important our Sacred Space is, and is truly the house of The Lord! A Note from Fr. Gosnell The Garden of Gethsemane, the Way of the Cross, Golgotha, and the empty tomb -- all places we have been hearing about Lenten and Easter season -- you will visit if you join me on pilgrimage to the Holy Land this November. $3,500.00 is the cost which includes round-trip airfare from Dulles Airport, all meals (except for lunches), and tips. We will be staying in Catholic hotels in Nazareth and Jerusalem. For more information, please contact me at sgosnell@archbalt.org or St. Ursula Parish Office at 410-665-2111. Please provide me with your snail mail address and I will send a brochure with more information. Fr. Stephen Gosnell, KHS Parish 8801 Harford Rd. Grow In Your Faith Catholic Q & A: What is Divine Mercy Sunday? Divine Mercy is both a message and a devotion. The message of Divine Mercy is truly at the heart of our Christianity. Summed up simply, we are to ask for God s mercy with a contrite heart, show mercy to those in our lives, and put our complete and total trust in Jesus Christ. God wants us to pray continually (Thess 5:16), reviewing our actions daily, and repenting in prayer of those things we should not have done, or failed to do. We are called to extend mercy and forgiveness to everyone in our lives, as Paul says in Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. And finally, Proverbs 3:5 tells us Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. A simple command, yet often difficult to put into practice, learning to trust completely in the Lord is a lifelong journey, bolstered by the sacraments and prayer. The devotion of Divine Mercy originated in Poland with Sr Maria Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament. She was not a highly educated woman, and came from a very poor family. She was rejected from several convents before the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy finally accepted her in 1926. She began seeing regular visions of Jesus in 1931, where He presented himself as the "King of Divine Mercy", wearing a white garment with red and pale rays coming from his heart. Sr. Faustina kept a diary, later published under the title The Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska: Divine Mercy in My Soul where she recorded the details of her visions and conversations with Jesus. One excerpt from her diary says as follows: "In the evening, when I was in my cell, I became aware of the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in blessing, the other was touching the garment at the breast. From the opening of the garment at the breast there came forth two large rays, one red and the other pale. In silence I gazed intently at the Lord; my soul was overwhelmed with fear, but also with great joy. After a while Jesus said to me, 'paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the inscription: Jesus, I trust in You.'" Her confessor, Father Michael Sopoćko, did not at first believe that Jesus was appearing to Sr. Faustina, and had her evaluated for mental illness. She was deemed to be completely free of mental illness. Fr. Sopoćko thereafter believed Sr. Faustina. During the visions, Jesus asked her to spread the message of Divine Mercy throughout the world. He asked that she share His image and that the faithful bless and venerate it on a special feast day, that first Sunday after Easter. Jesus told Sr. Fautina the following regarding His image: "The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous; the red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of My most tender Mercy at that time when My agonizing Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross...Fortunate is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him." Father Michael Sopoćk introduced her to artist Eugene Kazimierowski, who painted the first Divine Mercy image of Jesus in 1934. The following several years saw the devotion beginning to spread, with great help from Fr. Sopoćko. Sr. Faustina died at the the young age of 33 on October 5, 1938, of what is suspected to have been tuberculosis. Within 20 years the devotion was spreading all across Europe and into the United States, and in 1965, Karol Wojtyła, then Archbishop of Kraków and later Pope John Paul II, began the investigative process into her beatification. She was canonized on April 30, 2000. Explore the variety of resources on FORMED.org that can enrich your spiritual journey and bring you closer to Christ.
