THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH BECOMING AWARE There are, it seems, two muses: the Muse of Inspiration, who gives us inarticulate visions and desires, and the Muse of Realization, who returns again and again to say, It is yet more difficult than you thought. This is the muse of form. It may be then that form serves us best when it works as an obstruction, to baffle us and deflect our intended course. It may be that when we no longer know what to do, we have come to our real work and when we no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings. ~Wendell Berry THE WORSHIP OF GOD ON NOVEMBER 26, 2017 THE REIGN OF CHRIST

WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The flowers on the communion table are given by Joe and Claudia Templeton in celebration of their marriage on November, 26, 1971. Forty of their 46 years have been spent as members of this church family, for which they are grateful. About today s guest preacher: The Rev. Dr. Nancy Petty has served on the staff of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church since 1992, where she has been pastor since 2002. In her current role as senior pastor, she has been active in community leadership around issues of justice and equality. She has been a leader in the Moral Monday movement started by the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, and has led her congregation to stand in solidarity with other people of faith through the Historic Thousands on Jones Street People s Assembly. Nancy was active in the formation of Repairers of the Breach, Inc., also founded by Rev. Barber to rekindle a prophetic moral vision for justice, social change and movement building. Repairers of the Breach is a nonpartisan and ecumenical organization that seeks to build a progressive agenda rooted in a moral framework to counter the ultra-conservative constructs that try to dominate the public square. Nancy also formed an interfaith community group including Christians, Muslims and Jews to combat Islamophobia and racism. The group started in September 2015 and has sponsored three major community outreach events to educate attendees about Islam and foster relationships with the Muslim community. The North Carolina NAACP named Rev. Petty the 2014 Minister of the Year. The Wake County branch of the ACLU recognized her with the W.W. Finlator Award in 2011, and in 2015 she was honored as the individual recipient of the Human Relations Award from the City of Raleigh. Nancy, and her wife, Karla, reside in Raleigh. Today s cover art is Bom Pastor by Claudio Pastro, 1948-2016. We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by The Chancel Choir. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before the service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A-701712. Thank you for serving in the Nursery Heather McCuiston, Hser Ku, and Hannah Wall. * The Congregation standing as each is able.

Taking this as our theme, we will discuss key ideas from the book (still apropos in 2017), as well as share our own stories of Advent and Christmas meaning. Together we will brainstorm ways to simplify our Advent and Christmastide this year. You are invited to bring a favorite Christmas ornament, children s book, or beloved object that you put out every season to share at your table. There will also be surprises for all ages! Please join us! Check Event in the Friendship Register or contact the office by noon on Tuesday to make a reservation. Dinner is $6 for adults, $3 for children, or come just for the program. HANGING OF THE GREENS Chili Makers Needed: Can you bring a pot of chili to share on Sunday afternoon, December 3? Dear Binkley Members: Many of you participated Sunday in both worship and the Church in Conference held after the service on Nov. 19. This message is to notify everyone what occurred at the Church in Conference and what follow-up is planned. The resident members present passed the following motion signed by thirty eight Binkley members: I move that we vote to accept the Petition s call to reactivate the recommendation made by the Minister Search Committee to consider Rev. Marcus McFaul as the next settled minister of Binkley Baptist Church. Passage of this motion includes the following: Dr. McFaul will return to Chapel Hill on Nov. 29 for a week of meetings to share his own story and vision with Binkley groups (Church Council, Diaconate, Human Resource Committee, Staff) and the entire congregation. The gathering with the congregation will occur on Saturday, Dec. 2. Time and place for each of these gatherings is still to be determined. On Sunday, Dec. 3, Dr. McFaul will preach in the morning worship service. The following Monday and Tuesday he will speak individually with persons wishing to talk with him. Hours for these conversations will soon be announced. On Sunday, Dec. 10, a Church in Conference will be held following the worship service at which time there will be a vote to call Dr. Marcus McFaul as Binkley s lead pastor. Absentee ballots will be available from the church office beginning Wednesday, Nov. 22, and must be received back in the church office by 2 pm on Friday, Dec. 8. You may pick up an absentee ballot in the church office during office hours (10 am 3 pm Monday-Friday) or request one via e-mail (office@binkleychurch.org) and one will be mailed to you. Please put ABSENTEE BALLOT in the subject line. Email is preferable, but if you are unable to come by the church or cannot send an email, you may request a ballot by phone (919-942-4964). Thank you for participating in Binkley s future as God s hands in this part of God s earth. Sondra VanSant, Binkley Moderator
