Series: So Many Emojis Date: February 14, 2016 Lesson: God, are you trying to kill me? Connect Group Introductions (10 min) Welcome and personally speak to every student. Give special attention to any first timers or guests. Ask about one special thing that happened in their week. Also tell them one special thing that happened from your week. Fill out the Off-Campus Connect Group or Discipleship Groups form by writing the names of your students who were involved in either off-campus connect groups or discipleship groups this past week. Go over the Newsletter on your table with your students. Pray to begin the morning together. Large Group by Lead Teacher #1 (5 min) Story: Lead Teachers, tell a story or an example of when someone told you to do something but you didn t know how. Point: At Liberty Students, our goal is to help you to know HOW to grow in your faith and walk with Jesus. We don t just want to tell you to follow Jesus, but we want to keep giving you tools of how you can follow Him more closely. When it comes to doing our own devotions or being in a disciple making group, there is a very simple way to get the most out of them. We are going to use Genesis 22 to teach you how to have a better devotional life and disciple making group. The simple tool to remember is: Bible, Gospel, Personal. We always want to understand what the Bible is saying, connect it to the Gospel story, and then live it out personally in our lives. Intro into Discussion: In this first discussion time, we want you to study Genesis 22:1-9 and have a conversation around what you see in that passage.

Connect Group Discussion #1 (10 min) Leader Note: The purpose of this first connect group discussion time is to dive deep into the Biblical narrative of Isaac. Read Genesis 22:1-9 together. From Genesis 22:1-2, what exactly is God asking Abraham to do? What would your reaction be? What is a burnt sacrifice in the Old Testament? Answer: God is calling Abraham to make his only, promised son, Isaac, a burnt sacrifice. A burnt sacrifice is where the animal is killed by a knife (usually gutting the animal from neck to stomach with a knife. Then they would set the animal on fire on the altar. As the fire would consume the animal, it would be a burnt offering which was completely given to God since it could not be eaten. Read Genesis 22:3-4. After God asked Abraham to do something so extreme, what was Abraham s reaction? How could his reaction have been possible? Answer: Abraham s reaction really seems to be immediate obedience. I m sure there was much confusion, doubt, etc. But the Scriptures portray Abraham to be a great man of faith who believed and obeyed God. Abraham s reaction was possible because God had already promised him nations, made a covenant with him, and provided him a miracle son. Why not take God at his word after all that? Read Genesis 22:5. When God told Abraham to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering, why do you think he told the young men that he and Isaac were going to worship? How might this change our definition of worship? Answer: A life of faith and obeying God even when called to make a huge sacrifice is ultimately what worship is. Worship is not just singing songs in church, but worship is living all of your life in obedience for the glory of God! Read Genesis 22:6-9. Put yourself in this situation. Imagine you are Isaac. What are you thinking or feeling at this point? Answer: Isaac was definitely catching on when he didn t see an animal to sacrifice, but it certainly hit Isaac full-force when he found himself tied up and laid down on the altar. Ask your students, what are you seeing as the point of this story? Answer: Answers may vary per each student, of course. This question is meant to keep them thinking and not necessarily to reveal the right answer yet.

Connect Group Leaders Teaching Point to Students: (Please do not just read this section to your students, but think through it and communicate it to them from your own heart.) Remind your students that God will call us to faithfully make some very difficult and confusing sacrifices throughout our lives. Following Jesus will require sacrifice! Large Group by Lead Teacher #2 (5 min) What an unbelievable story! This is real history. Could you imagine being Abraham and God asking you to personally make your only son a burnt sacrifice. Remember, Isaac isn t just Abraham s only son, but he s also Abraham s promised son! Remember last week how God promised Abraham to be the father of many nations? The way God made that promise possible was by giving Abraham and Sarah a miracle birth later on in life with Isaac. So now, it seems like God is the one who is confused. Is he going back on His promise? Is this all a huge trick? This is how it feels in life sometimes. We go through So Many Emotions in life in our roller coaster relationship with God. But this passage teaches us why God asks for huge sacrifices! Read on and discuss more. Our last section was on Bible and now this section will be on Gospel. How does the Gospel story connect into each Bible story? Connect Group Discussions #2 (10 min) Leader Note: The purpose of this connect group discussion time is to lead your students to an understanding of how the Gospel connects into Genesis 22. Read Genesis 22:10-12. Abraham was really going to kill Isaac like God had asked! Why do you think God stopped Him at the very last possible second? Answer: God possibly stopped Abraham at the very last possible second so that he could feel every single emotion of sacrificing his own son without actually having to do it. Read Romans 8:32. How does Genesis 22 help us to deeper understand the Gospel in that God did NOT spare His Son for us? Answer: Genesis 22 helps us to understand how difficult it was for God the Father to sacrifice God the Son Jesus for the sin of the world. Similar to Abraham s love for Isaac, God loves His only Son Jesus supremely more. Genesis 22 gives us a deeper look into the emotion of God sacrificing HIs one and only Son, Jesus. It also shows us God s grace. Since He s given us the greatest gift He could ever offer (Jesus), why would God not give us all else that we need? So if we don t have it yet, does that mean that we don t need it yet?

Read Genesis 22:13-14. Why didn t God just call the whole thing off after He told Abraham to stop? Why was it incredibly important that He would provide a substitute sacrifice for Isaac? Answer: Because the Bible isn t just about teaching us moral truths. Instead, the Bible is all about teaching us different perspectives that deepen us in the Gospel. Read 1 Corinthians 5:7. How does Genesis 22 give you a deeper understanding that Jesus is our Passover Lamb who was sacrificed as our substitute? Answer: If Jesus didn t die for me, then I would have to eternally pay the price for my own sin! Jesus trusted His Father to Mt. Calvary, and willingly paid the price by dying on the cross. Some historians even tell us that Mt. Moriah is the exact same place as Golgotha where Jesus died (historians do differ on this, though). Read Hebrews 11:17-19. One question is still left unanswered. Why would Abraham be willing to sacrifice his only son that God promised to bring about nations from? Wouldn t that make God a liar or even crazy? Answer: Abraham believed in God so deeply that he knew if he had killed Isaac, God would have raised Isaac from the dead because Isaac was the key to His promise! Connect Group Leaders Teaching Point to Students: (Please do not just read this section to your students, but think through it and communicate it to them from your own heart.) Students, you need to be in God s Word so deeply that you hear God s voice this clearly. God will call you to sacrifices in life. The ultimate reason why God calls us to sacrifice is for the sake of the Gospel. Sacrifices always give us opportunities to make Jesus more glorified in our own lives as well as share Him with others. Large Group by Lead Teacher #3 (5 min) We ve now gone through the Bible portion of Genesis 22. We ve even seen its clear connection into the Gospel as we ve looked at Romans, 1 Corinthians, and Hebrews. We re not done. Devotions and Disciple Making groups that change lives are those that also get Personal. The point of the Bible and the Gospel is for our personal lives to go through transformational change. Take the last few minutes to discuss personal changes that this passage is calling us to make. Connect Group Discussions #3 (10 min)

Read Genesis 22:15-18. Think back through this whole story of Genesis 22 again. What is the grand conclusion of this story? Answer: Abraham chose God over his own emotions, his own family, and even his own logic (is God crazy?). Abraham now gets to keep his son Isaac as well as is blessed through Isaac with the nation of people God originally promised him. Read Romans 12:1. In our lives, we re called to be both Abrahams (to make sacrifices) and Isaacs (to be a sacrifice). Name as many examples as you can of both. What are some areas that God may call you to sacrifice, and what are some ways that God may call you to be a sacrifice? Answer: Answers will vary among students. Sacrifice comes before Blessing. This is a Gospel pattern we see with Abraham in Genesis 22, but we also see it in Jesus life ending with His resurrection and ascension. The same is true for our lives as well. With every example of sacrifice you mentioned above, now list blessings God may give when you faithfully obey Him. Answer: Answers of blessings will vary with sacrifices listed. Connect Group Leaders Teaching Point to Students: Please share a time with your students where God called you to make or to be a huge sacrifice, but He blessed you greatly from your obedience.
