JUNE 2017 My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This last week the Minister s Association met and began planning a wonderful event to celebrate the 200 th Anniversary of Madison, and the Spiritual Heritage of our community. There will be many such celebrations during 2018, but this event particularly will celebrate the vital presence of God in our midst, and the great churches and ministries that have helped established our community. The following announcement gives some detail to our plans and will continued to be developed as we meet this September 2017. If you have ideas that you would like to share in the planning process, please contact me at chalipilias@wnccumc.net, or Rev. Chuck McGathy at cpmcgathy@yahoo.com. Community Worship Service to Celebrate Madison s 200 th Anniversary The faith community of Madison and surrounding environs is coming together to witness to the place religious faith has played in the history of our town. Together we will join together in love and witness as we come together in 2018 to acknowledge our heritage of faith and our hope thatit will continue to speak powerfully to our community through our churches and places of worship. Plans are NOW being formed as we look ahead to a great community worship celebration. Here are some planning considerations: A joint worship will begin at 10:00 and go to 12:00 noon on Sunday, 10 June, 2018 (Third Sunday after Pentecost). The service will be held at the intersection of Murphy and Market streets in downtown Madison. A stage will be set up for speakers and singers. Following the worship we will have a chance to share food together. Tables will be set up along the sidewalks as we share lunch with our brothers and sisters. The plans regarding worship speakers, choirs, and other acts of worship are still to come. YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VITAL in planning. People in our community are getting excited about this great year of celebrations. Let s support one another as we lift up the Spirit of God in our community. Your Pastor and Friend, Chuck Halipilias

CAREGIVERS SUPPORT NAME CHANGE The Caregiver s Support Group has a new name. Henceforth, it shall be called The Caring Group. This means it is not necessary for you to be a caregiver to join this small group. The group currently had 7 members and is open to anyone who wishes to join. The group meets on every other Wednesday from 11 am until 12:30pm in the Dean Knight SS Classroom. This is a very caring group of people who come together in love and fellowship to listen and share with each other and pray for each other, and their loved ones. Please consider joining this group if you are not participating in a small group. Our next meeting is May 31st. Submitted by Carolyn Evans Chair of Adult Ministries PRAYER MINISTRY SET TO BEGIN Our prayer ministry, using the automated phone system, will begin shortly. MEALS ON WHEELS The scheduling for the delivery of meals for Meals on Wheels 2017-2018 is underway. Thank you to those of you who already volunteer for this worthwhile mission work in our church. We always need NEW volunteers -it can take as little at 1-2 days a year of your time, for 2 hours on those days. I sincerely thank each of the Madison UMC MOW volunteers. It is a pleasure to coordinate this special ministry for our church. The work we do is special because we deliver smiles, kind words, and nourishment to help make a few lives more meaningful Thanks to all who participate. For more information or to volunteer call Judy Fowler at 336-427-5890. Submitted by Judy Fowler A HYMN S LONG JOURNEY The beloved hymn How Great Thou Art came together across many years and miles. In 1885, when Swedish preacher Carl Boberg wrote a poem titled O, Great God, he probably never dreamed he d hear it performed years later to an old Swedish tune. Or that a Russian version would impact Stuart Hine, an English missionary to Poland, several decades later. Hine penned his own English version, resulting in the now-familiar lyrics. From the rolling thunder echoing off the Carpathian Mountains, to the woods and forest glades of Romania, to powerful conversions to Christianity, Hine was inspired to craft each verse. Sometimes the Holy Spirit takes time to complete a work, and that journey is as important as the destination.
