The Kings of Judah Jehoshaphat: Plans to Go to Battle 2 Chronicles 20:13-19 Lesson XI Written: January 7, 1990 Verse 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. Verse 14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; Verse 15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. Verse 16 Tomorrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. Verse 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you. Verse 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. Verse 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high. 2 Chronicles 20:13-19 For our introduction look again at 2 Chronicles 20:13: "And all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, their children. In following the story of the Kings of Judah, 2 Chronicles 20 begins with the enemies of Judah uniting in war against the tiny country. We must keep reminding ourselves that when we are reading the Old Testament, we are reading an account of actual, factual history. This really happened. I think it is difficult, if not well nigh impossible, for us to enter into the feeling of Jehoshaphat and the Nation when the armies from the North, the East and the South declared war. The West is not mentioned because there is the Great Sea. The Nation was literally surrounded by her declared enemies. A situation we, nor our fathers have ever had in this country. Strange as it may seem, as it was 2800 years ago, so it is today. The Nations who were enemies of Israel then, are enemies of Israel now. Perhaps this fact should indicate to us that the God of Israel has not ceased to be the God of Israel. If God changes not, He can no-more cease to be the "God of Israel" than He can ever cease to be "The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Nor will He ever cease being OUR God. But as we said last week, all this is typical. We, like Israel, are constantly surrounded by our spiritual enemies. So what did Jehoshaphat do? He called a committee meeting! A strategy session! A Seminar! He authorized another commission!. No! No! He set himself to seek the Lord, proclaimed a fast and assembled the Nation to ask help of the Lord. (2 Chronicles 20:13,14) He called a Prayer- Meeting. And he led the congregation in a great prayer. Surely there is a lesson here for us. "The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God. Page 1 of 5

Last week, we concluded at 2 Chronicles 20:13. And as we said, The fathers, the mothers. the sons and the daughters. the youth and the children, were all together at that prayer meeting. They did not hid the dangers that they faced from the children. They ALL had a share in that troubled hour. I am sure there was a family-feeling there that day. I know I am old-fashioned. I know I am considered to be an old foggie who has had his day. But my prayer is, "Lord help me to be honest without being unduly critical. But I believe the rising generations are missing something in life because families are too segregated. Notice again, "the little ones" were at this prayer meeting. They did not try to spare them from this unpleasant part of life, nor keep them from the prayer-meeting. It seems to me that our society seems to think that young people and especially little children, should be sheltered from the grim realities of life. Take by way of example, the realities of birth and death. Mothers are taken away to a hospital to give birth to their babies. The aged, especially, are pushed aside into extenda-care hospitals to die. We are brain-washed into calling this progress! It was in our farm home, my mother gave birth to seven babies. My sister died in that same house as did my grandmother. These serious events wereshared by all the family as a family. When the call to prayer was given, it was as a family we prayed. When we went to the home-meetings it was as a family. When we went to Church, it was as a family. In the hours of crisis we shared as a family. And although we know circumstances are different today, this kind of upbringing of which I have spoken, had great value. I think 2 Chronicles20:13 describes an old-time gathering of families for a time of Special Prayer. I would like to tarry at this verse until I with you, feel the very atmosphere. "Atmosphere" is something I miss today. On the day of Pentecost, Acts 2:2, describes an atmosphere created by the Lord Himself. "And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. It was from Heaven! And I am sure all there knew it was from Heaven. And all felt that Holy atmosphere. In Acts 2, they were all sitting. In 2 Chronicles 20 they were all standing. And as they stood the atmosphere of Heaven was there. Jehoshaphat, had prayed, that is true. The families of Judah had joined in, that is true. They were in great trouble. And they were in one accord. They all knew they had to hear from God. And He did not fail them. There was an atmosphere in that meeting because God was there. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Acts 2:2 When in Regina, in the old Scarth Street Mission, after a Sunday Morning service, when all had left, a girl sat quietly in one of the pews. I went to her and as I sat down beside here she said, "I don't want to leave. I came in off of the street to this unknown place today and I have felt something here I have never felt before. GOD WAS THERE! I do not want us to miss this lesson. The Leader, the King, had set himself to seek the Lord. The people, the families, everyone, had joined to ask help of the Lord. As the Psalmist said, Psalm 34:4 "I sought the Lord", and that is what is happening here. Page 2 of 5

I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4 Our trouble today is, we do everything before we do this. Humanly speaking, to repeat this scene in our assemblies today would be well nigh impossible. Because, it seems to me, few are aware of the hidden spiritual dangers, or the spiritual battle we are in. If all were in one accord to seek the Lord, not only would there be an atmosphere, the unexpected would take place, as it did here. And there would come a new-old excitement when we meet together!. We have looked at: 1. JEHOSHAPHAT'S PROBLEM 2 Chronicles20:1,2 2. JEHOSHAPHAT's PLAN 2 Chronicles20:3-4 3. JEHOSHAPHAT'S PRAYER 2 Chronicles20:5-13 Now we come to : 4 THE PROPHECY 2 Chronicles20:14-17 Verse 14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; Verse 15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. 2 Chronicles 20:14-17 I am sure it was sudden-,on one man in that great congregation, the Spirit of God fell. (2 Chronicles 20:14) (This is a Pentecostal meeting before the day of Pentecost.) Upon Jahaziel (the name means, "God sees"), a man of the priestly tribe of Levi, and a direct descendent of the family of Asaph, a family noted for their gift of song, came the Spirit of the Lord. In verse 14, his father, his grandfather and his great-grandfather, his tribe and his family are all named. It is very evident that he belonged to the family of God. He was not an outsider. His family had been known in the congregation for some time. And he was the instrument God chose to use. In observing Acts 6:3, often, when we chose men to minister in our Churches, we miss the first qualification. We notice the words, "men of honest report full of the Holy Ghost" but we miss the words, "Look ye out AMONG YOU. The first qualification for ministry in an assembly is that of one "among you". One who is really part of you, not an outsider. When the Churches made choice of a man to handle their money, or minister in necessary carnal matters, 2 Corinthians 8:22, it says they made choice of a man whom we have often times proved diligent in many things. In other words, a well- known brother in the congregation. 1 Thessalonians 5:12, Paul exhorts "know them which labour among you and are over you in the Lord. Now I find in this Old Testament story, God following those principles. He uses a man who could prove that he belonged to that congregation. Page 3 of 5

Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. Acts 6:3 And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you. 2 Corinthians 8:22 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 1 Thessalonians 5:12 Many times to our sorrow, congregations have been led into error and deep trouble by listening to unknown, unproven men. God was present in this great meeting and God upheld this principle. God revealed Himself by using a man who belonged to the congregation. I suspect this man had never prophecied before. It was not a usual thing but a unique thing. Perhaps he was one who had joined in the singing, perhaps even in the choir, but had never spoken a word in public before. He is a Levite but he is not listed as a prophet. Now we need not think of him as being a great man, any more than we need to think of Baalim's donkey as being a great donkey! In these matters God is sovereign. When God makes choice, He chooses whom He wills. He can use anyone or anything. We were to visit an aged relative in October, 89 (Aunt Kate) She had attended Old Knox Church in Saskatoon in the days of revival under Brother Lovick and Brother Erickson, (1923-1927) (Brother Harder remembers those days) Our aunt said: "In one of those meetings, our timid, shy, backward sister Mary, stood up and spoke in tongues. With tears in her eyes she added; "That was not like Mary. In fact it was not Mary, it was God. She knew it. The congregation knew it! And aunt Kate has never forgotten. And in the text in Chronicles, there is no mistake. God used this man. I have been Pentecostal all my life, and I have seen very little of this. I have seen a good deal of the spurious, that touches no one but the speaker, but have witnessed only a little of the genuine. Notice the words in 2 Chronicles 20:15: "Thus saith the Lord, be not afraid of this great multitude..(when God is nigh, He dispels fear)..for the battle is not yours but Gods. It was not a word merely from a man. It was a word from God. It was a witness of the Spirit. How we need this. The battle we are in, is not ours. "It was said of Bro. Lawrence " that when he had failed in his duty, he only confessed his fault, saying to God, I shall never do otherwise if you leave me to myself. 'Tis you who must hinder my falling, and mend what is amiss". After that he gave himself no more uneasiness about it. He thought that we ought to act with God in the greatest simplicity, speaking to Him frankly and plainly, and imploring His assistance in our affairs just as they happen.. Such is our boldness before God. In it is health of mind, for fear is poison, which maddens and corrupts. Therein is our full stature as men and women, for fearful souls are something less than whole."therein is peace " (Keswick1952 page 65) Page 4 of 5

Notice the words in 2 Chronicles 20:17 "Ye shall not need to fight in this battle. SET yourselves. STAND ye still and SEE the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. FEAR NOT nor be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them. For the Lord will be with you" Psalm 23, David wrote: "I will fear no evil for thou art with me. That was the great promise of this prophecy. If the Lord is with us we need not fear, any enemy, any battle, any situation. And oft times just when we feel most forsaken, He then reveals His great care for us. ( I told about the help in paying our rent). Page 5 of 5
