WHAT ARE THE FOUR ENVIRONMENTS? Every week as we dig into the Bible during Awestruck, the study guide will contain four sections: Personal, Home, Community, and Weekend. Each of these four environments plays an important part in helping you grow deeper in your relationship with Jesus Christ. PERSONAL All relationships need one-on-one time for greater health. Time with God on a regular basis in your personal life accomplishes a critical aspect in growing your relationship with God. Studying Scripture individually with only the Holy Spirit as your teacher can help you learn to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. This is crucial to move your relationship with God from your head to your heart. Psalm 1:2 says this about the blessed man: His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. (ESV) HOME If there are multiple people in your home, the opportunity to practice your faith together can go a long way in bringing about true transformation. Deuteronomy 6:7 says, you shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (ESV) COMMUNITY Andy Stanley observed, Life change happens in circles, not rows. In community, group interaction and hearing the perspectives of others help fill in and round out our understanding of Scripture. That s why being in a small group during our integrated Bible engagement experience is so important. We learn from each other and we grow together when we pursue community built with Jesus as the uniting factor. Acts 2:42 reminds us, And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. (ESV) WEEKEND By the time you come to the weekend service, you are truly ready to worship. You are not coming drained from a difficult week, but rather ready to celebrate what God has done in your personal life, your home life, and your community life. Use the space in the weekend secion to record your takeaways or take notes during the sermon. The weekend experience becomes the dessert to a hearty meal you have eaten all week. 2 Corinthians 3:17 says, Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom! (NIV) Keep this clearly in mind. The study guide is not the Bible. It is a resource or tool. Use the resource with your Bible wide open in order to let God transform your heart and the hearts of those in your home and community. To get the most from the study guide, use it as a tool. But also remember these three important things: DAILY RHYTHMS There is not one right way to use the study guide, but most people benefit from using it every day to do a little bit of the study. Waiting until Saturday night or right before your group time to try and finish everything will yield some benefit, but daily time with God is better. Choose one or two questions or items each day and build a rhythm or plan. Maybe it s the first ten minutes of your day. Maybe it s right after dinner or before bed. Carve out a time. Put it on your calendar. Create a daily rhythm for your personal time with God. REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS If there are others in your home, the best thing you can do with the Home section is to set realistic expectations. Not everyone will come with the same level of enthusiasm. There are attitudes, challenges, different maturity levels, and a variety of other factors to distract you. Don t become discouraged by setting high expectations. The consistency of a regular practice in your home will yield results. Keep at it. Stay diligent. And leave the results to God. ON THIS TEAM, EVERYONE PLAYS The healthiest small groups are the ones with shared leadership. When one person always takes the lead, others may become passive. This study guide has been designed to let anyone be the leader for the gathering. Hand the responsibility to a different person each week. Give them a week to prepare, let everyone take part. Use this phrase to get the most out of your time together each week: On this team, everyone plays. HOW DO I GET THE MOST FROM THE STUDY GUIDE? 4 5

TUDY TOOLS In addition to the study guide, we ve prepared other tools to help God s Word grow deep in your heart. Consider incorporating these tools into your weekly study routine. SCRIPTURE READING PLAN Begin each week with a personal study of scripture. Use your Bible and the Awestruck scripture reading plan to follow the weekly study theme, and grow as you learn how you can be open to the miracles and a part of the miracles of Jesus. The reading plan will prepare you for both your Community and Weekend experiences. Use the printed copy of the reading plan located in the study guide, or download the PDF at oakhillschurch.com/studytools. YOUVERSION APP (DIGITAL DAILY SCRIPTURE READING PLAN) Follow along daily with the Awestruck scripture reading plan on your computer or mobile device using the YouVersion Bible app (download from itunes or the Google store). Search for the Awestruck: Experience the Miracles of Jesus daily reading plan. The plan will begin the Monday prior to the first sermon. SMALL GROUP VIDEOS As you gather in community each week, use the Awestruck group videos to participate with Max in a group discussion about that week s miracle. Watch online at oakhillschurch.com/groupvideos, or stream through the Oak Hills Church channel on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Apple TV. SERMON ARCHIVE Conclude your week of study with worship and teaching at your local Oak Hills Church campus or via live stream. View past sermons online at oakhillschurch.com/watch. WORSHIP MUSIC PLAYLIST Use the Awestruck playlist of songs to help you worship every day of the week. New songs reflective of the series and the current week s study will be added to the list each week. Utilize this playlist to set your heart on singing to the Lord and blessing his name throughout your week. To access the free playlist, install the Spotify app on your computer or mobile phone (download from Spotify.com, itunes or the Google store). Create a free account and listen to music free of charge. Search for the oakhillschurch account and scroll to public playlists to access the Awestruck playlist free of charge. Scan the QR code below to access the playlist or visit oakhillschurch.com/studytools for a link to the playlist and for step-by-step instructions. 6

WEEK 1 BE OPEN TO THE MIRACLE A miracle is a work accomplished by God for godly purpose. Miracles are shoulder-taps from God, whispers (or shouts) reminding us: You are not alone. I m still in charge. My plan will be achieved. Miracles remind us that there is more to this life than meets the eye. Miracles give birth to hope, a living hope. BE A PART OF THE MIRACLE Jesus was intent on involving people in his miracles. He raised Lazarus from the dead, but asked Martha to remove the stone. He fed the crowds but told the followers to distribute the bread. He invited Peter to walk on water but left it up to him to step out of the boat. He healed the paralytic but asked him to take up his mat. He healed the blind man, but only after the blind man washed the mud out of his eyes. Are you open to playing a part in God s miraculous displays? Could it be that God wants to do mighty works through you? ACTS 2:21-24 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved. INTRODUCTION 22 Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know. 23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. JOHN 14:12 12 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. Pray, as you begin this session of Awestruck. If the group is new, take a few minutes to introduce yourselves. Then have one or two people share a three-minute God story. God stories are an opportunity to share a way you saw God at work in the past week. It s about seeing God s fingerprints. Look for the miraculous and make sure the hero of a God story is always God. Read Acts 2:21-24. Watch the video for session one and answer these questions: What was the main thing that jumped out to you from the video? Why? How did the discussion either challenge or encourage your perspective on the miraculous? Answer these additional questions about the reading: What does it mean to call upon the name of the Lord? How did Jesus demonstrate the miraculous in his life? Why is the resurrection so important as a foundation for faith in Jesus Christ? What does it mean for all people that Jesus was not held by death? When we gather for worship, we sometimes rush in late, go through the motions, or become passive observers. Imagine if we arrived with expectancy each time. Imagine looking for ways God might show up in a miraculous way. Imagine gathering together with great hope, eagerly looking for the fingerprints of God. Be open to the miracle. Be a part of the miracle. Use the space below to record prayer requests and praises. Keep these questions in mind: Have you seen God at work this past week? In what way? How do you hope to see the miraculous this next week? How can you be used by God to reach out to others? NAME PRAISES AND REQUESTS Share your personal reflection with the group. Consider this question: What is your takeaway from this session? 15

Do you need your hope lifted and faith strengthened? Don t we all? In fact, our world seems to be in need of some miracles and miracle workers. We don t need charlatans or hucksters or selfpromoting flukes. But society desperately needs men and women of God who believe that their good Father is still at work in the world. He still calms the storms. He still feeds the hungry. He still heals the hurting. And he still uses his disciples in the miracle. Over thirteen weeks, we will study eleven miracles recorded by John in his gospel. Each message will seek to challenge us to be open to the miracle and be a part of the miracle. With God s help, our study will refresh our faith and renew our hope in the miracle-working God the Bible describes; a God who doesn t think twice about interrupting the natural order to display supernatural strength. A God who is outside our periodic table of elements, unfettered by the laws he governs. The Bible invites you to believe in this God. We invite you to experience the miracles of Jesus. We invite you to be awestruck. OAKHILLSCHURCH.COM
