Tidings Emory United Methodist Church Pastor Taysie Phillips 1600 Emory Road, Upperco, MD 21155, 410-429-6008 Church Office E-Mail: churchoffice@emoryunitedmethodist.org Pastor s E-Mail: taysie5@comcast.net Pastor s Phone: (C) 301-639-4670 www.emoryunitedmethodist.org April, 2017 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Easter! The great and wondrous day when we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. This is the central event in all of history, the pivotal day by which we mark our calendars. The bad guys thought they had won when Jesus was crucified. Even all of Jesus disciples thought that the bad guys had won. But they all underestimated the power and love of our God. The Apostle s Creed tells us that On the third day he rose from the dead. This is the day that we celebrate as Easter Sunday. Oh, the joy that floods into my soul! Many of us know the incredible joy that especially comes after thinking that you had lost only to have victory grabbed firmly at the very moment when defeat seemed certain. Victory in Jesus! The words of the prophets had been fulfilled! I have read that the Hebrew language has more words for Joy than any other language. There are something like 27 different words in the Old Testament for joy. In contrast to the rituals of other faiths in the area, Israelite worship emphasized a joyful celebration of God. They considered God the source of Joy.

There was a famous mystic in the 15 th century named Julian of Norwich who once said, The greatest honor that you can give to Almighty God, greater than all your penances and sacrifices and mortifications, is to live joyfully because of the knowledge of his love. I agree! The ultimate Christian witness to the world of God s love is Joy. A great priest and evangelist named Samuel M. Shoemaker said, The surest mark of a Christian is not faith, or even love, but joy. So let us all joyously celebrate God s love this Easter Day! This is a day to remember the coming of Christ into the world. This is a day to remember and celebrate Jesus victory on the cross, destroying sin and death. Hallelujah! Jesus is risen indeed! Blessings and peace to all Pastor Taysie Pastor Taysie HAPPY APRIL BIRTHDAYS 4/3 Diana Blessing 4/17 Phillip Fertitta 4/4 Freda Groomes 4/18 Nick Smith 4/5 Sandy Schaller 4/19 Patty Kelly 4/6 Elaine Dodds 4/20 Georgia Blake 4/7 Adam Sheely Jack Blake Jane Alban 4/22 Charlotte Hendee 4/8 Josh Evans 4/23 Clark Weikers 4/9 Dwight Johnson 4/24 Sharon Evans Luke Thomas Brayden Fertitta 4/10 Lisa Thomas 4/25 Chris Wineke 4/11 Connie Hamm Nancy Korman If you would like your name to be listed or deleted from our birthday list just let me know. Please sign up in remembrance or in honor of someone or occasion or just to the glory of God. There are many Sunday s still available. The Emory Ladies are meeting on Monday mornings to make blankets for Project Linus. Some of them are taken home to work on during the week. While it s a volunteer job, the thank you notes we receive makes it all worthwhile. If you can sew, iron, pin or cut, come join them for a time of fellowship. When a note, such as the one below comes to us, you will be glad you did. The note reads: Lisa is an 11-year volunteer at Johns Hopkins Infant/Toddler Surgical Medical Unit, and does everything from laundry to rocking babies. She recently sent us a note of appreciation: Please know that your good work does not go unnoticed. Although we don t say Thank You nearly enough, each time we use a Project Linus blanket, we silently thank you for making a difference in a child s life. Please forward this note throughout your organization so that everyone knows how much your blankets are used and appreciated. Not a week goes by without beds being made up to include a Project Linus blanket;

or for sick, crying babies being swaddled with one of your Project Linus blankets. There is no need to wonder if your blankets are used and appreciated-lisa has given us a resounding YES on both accounts! Outreach Our outreach for April will be going to Giving to Extremes. This is a medical charity that sends doctors to underserved nations around the world to provide life-changing surgeries. Emory is connected to this mission through one of our church members who has served on these medical teams since 2010. Once again, Donna will be taking orders for the Easter Lilies. The cost is $10.00. The orders are needed by April 9 th. Please circle on form in memory or in honor of and also your name to be listed on the form.
