While the teachers and the staff played an active role in the selection of the themes and accoutrements, the parents saw to it that no stone was unturned in seeing their wards in deft make-up and readied for the occasion. The stage itself was equally aesthetic, the decor designed by the drawing teacher, the backdrop symbolically projecting the composite character of the programme. Sri. S. Vasudeva, Joint Director of Pre-University Education (Rtd), who was the chief guest, complimented the students on their talent and spoke of the significance of Rajyothsava. In about three four months the procedure of issuing student visa to US will be cleared and by February next onwards a new online application processing will be devised to hasten the procedure. HASSLE FREE US VISA SOON bangalore.usvpp.gov Mr. Leon Gendin addressing the gathering This assurance was given by US Consul, Mr. Leon Gendin of the US Consulate General, Chennai at a meeting got-up by Bhavan s American Corner on November 30, 2009. Exchanging views on the subject with students and parents, Mr Gendin said that getting a student visa should not be a nightmarish experience. He said only two things concern the US your AMERICAN CORNER PROGRAMME 9 bonafides and finance. The rest is peripheral. Mr. Gendin reassured that getting a student visa was not as difficult as it was made out to be. What was crucial is the students intention and one year financial support. The source of his sponsorship is as vital, he added. Mr. Gendin clarified that one might apply more than once and each applications would be considered afresh. But the questions which had not been satisfactorily answered in the earlier applications would be cross checked. We really do not rely too much on documents. We depend on students intentions. The Consulate must be convinced that what is stated in your application form is truth, he said. However, a student intending to study in a US university had better research the area of his study well before

the interview, he advised. He added if the number of Indian students seeking American education is increasing, American students opting for Chinese and Indian education too are growing. Earlier, American students were enamored with studying in European or UK universities. But now they are heading to Asia and mostly to China and India for business and management studies, he said. He pointed out that students may, after completing the first year, finance may augment their by working part time. It s only tourists who are forbidden from working in the US, he said. When asked about the criterion of the US Consulate to decide whether a student is a promising one or mediocre, he said, We don t really seek to know that. But the university that accepted him or her will review to an extent the promising character of a student. IT S ONLY TOURISTS WHO ARE FORBIDDEN FROM WORKING IN THE US, 10 ONLY TWO THINGS CONCERN THE US CONSULATE Mr. Gendin refuted reports that the American Consulate is tough on students of a certain community from India. Nothing of the sort. Every applicant is personally dealt with, not communally, he said. Responding to queries, he said that there was no difference in dealing with students seeking technical or scientific or humanities studies. CORRIGENDUM Reference the report on the function where Anjali, a monograph on Bangalore Nagarathnamma (Dec, 2009) was released. By an oversight the location where the savant had gone a whole hog in helping create a memorial to Saint Thyagaraja, has slipped Though it is well-known that the location is Tiruvayyars in Tanjaore district of Tamil Nadu, its mention is well worth repeating. The omission is regretted. - Editor
