BOOT CAMP Your Foundation Matters 1 John 1:1-10, page 1228 (in the Bible located in the seat back pocket) Dr. Tom Osborne will be speaking Sunday, February 16 in both services. Invite a friend. New Covenant Community Church February 9, 2014 1

Next Steps The author John is confronting some false teaching that was creeping into the churches. The issues he was addressing were: 1. A denial of the incarnation and uniqueness of Jesus Christ. 2. A denial of the centrality of Jesus Christ in salvation (Atonement for all sin). 3. A lack of an appropriate Christian lifestyle (How to deal with sin in a believer's life). 4. An emphasis on knowledge (often secret) only. 5. A tendency toward exclusivity ( A believer's relationship with the non believing world). This week, read through the entire five chapters of 1 John in one setting several times, looking for common themes, recurring statements/words, and keeping in mind the purpose of the letter (see above). 1 John 1:1-10 Why did John begin his comments by addressing the "timeless" element of Jesus (Jesus predates creation) as a foundation for everything else he was going to say? Presently, what would your core foundation/value system be (win at all cost, survive the week, find a spouse, get healthy, etc.)? Your foundation matters because everything else in your life takes it's cue from that core. Your core/foundational belief system trumps in your life. John is going to make a case for Jesus to be that core/foundation in a believer's life. Therefore, it would be very important to have a correct understanding of Jesus. John states that it is in Jesus that everything finds clarity and meaning (see verse 5). What would it look like for you to let Jesus bring light to the "dark" areas of your life? Any area of your life where you are trying to make life work apart from Christ would be considered "dark." Take time for some introspection looking for any areas that are Christless and confess that to God and invite Him to enter those areas.
