September 16, 2018 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 6:33 I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least. - Dorothy Day Dear Parish Family, Who is Jesus for you? For some, he is a provider of abundant blessings, someone who, if you have enough faith, will give you prosperity and a sweet life. After all, the word Gospel means Good News, and, as such, it would seem that we shouldn t have to face difficulties and the reality of bad news. For others, however, Jesus is one who promises that, even in the midst of sufferings, we can find in Him life and true freedom. Our gospel this Sunday challenges us to reflect on this very issue. Indeed, if we are to try and comprehend the good news that Jesus offers, then we must face the fact that there is much bad news in our lives and in the world. We ve certainly been made aware of that reality over the past weeks, given the news of the scandals in our Church. Peter knew that as well. When Jesus asked him and the other disciples, Who do you say that I am, Peter answered, probably with enthusiasm, You are the Christ! After witnessing such good news as Jesus healing and curing so many people, Peter likely thought that the time of persecution for Israel from such adversaries as the Egyptians, Persians, Babylonians, and Romans was over. The liberator, the Christ has come! Good news has arrived! On the contrary, the good news that Jesus proclaimed rejects that type of thinking. For Jesus, his reign is about suffering, and cannot be understood apart from the Cross. To be a disciple a true follower of Jesus means to embrace the cross in our lives as well, however it presents itself. This is hard to take. Peter certainly had difficulty with it, and, in no uncertain terms, Jesus put him in his place for not wanting to go along with it. How apropos that we hear this gospel in the midst of the present turmoil in the Church. So, who is Jesus for you? Who do you say that he is? Do you really expect there to be no difficulties in being his follower, in being a good Catholic, in doing all the right things? Or do you humbly accept the reality of the Cross in your life, (and in the Church), and believe that in joining your sufferings to Christ s, you also will know the glory of his resurrection? ************************************************************************************ This weekend is our Parish Ministry Fair, a time for our many ministries and organizations to provide information on how they build up our community in responding to Christ s call to serve. I invite you to take this opportunity to consider your own involvement as his disciple. Be it through the various liturgical ministries of Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Hospitality, Music and more, to being of service to the less fortunate through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, or journeying with those who are hurting by becoming a minister of care in the Stephen Ministry, there are many ways that you can reach beyond yourself and share the gifts God has given you. Tables with information about these ministries are set up in the Parish Activity Center this Sunday. God bless you, always, and in all ways. Father Ed

Gratefully Giving: We are a Stewardship Parish Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. Mark 8:34 When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for our own life, but the lives of others as well. Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be available at the Ministry Fair on Sunday, September 16 th to answer questions about our ministry. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to grow in faith through service to those experiencing financial crisis. The Society is also hosting an Information Night on Thursday, September 20 th. If you are interested, contact Janie Alonzo at janiealonzo4747@gmail.com or 979-777-3737. LIFE IS A GIFT FROM GOD...PSALM 127:3 Sept 26th-Nov 4th - 40 Days for Life is a 40-day campaign of prayer & fasting, education and a constant peaceful prayer vigil in front of abortion facilities. This international movement has resulted in 90+ abortion facilities closing, over 160 abortion clinic workers having conversions and leaving their jobs, and over 14,000 women choosing life for children they were going to abort. In Central Texas at least 266 women have changed their minds and chosen life! Today, please stop by the Coalition for Life booth to find out how you can get involved with this powerful and life-saving movement. You can also find more information online at Central- TexasCoalition.com or by calling the Coalition for Life office at (512) 296-2071. HUNGER AWARENESS MINISTRY ISTRY The Hunger Awareness Ministry would like to extend heartfelt thanks for all of the food donations our generous parishioners make each week. Our growing community means continually increasing needs for food donations. In addition to the 1 pound bags of dried pinto beans and rice normally collected for the Vincentian Family Center other needed items for the food pantry are non-perishables, like Canned vegetables, Canned fruit, Canned soup, Top Ramen, Peanut Butter, Macaroni n cheese, Canned meat and tuna, Pasta and Cereal. Thank you for your support. For any questions please contact Hunger Awareness Ministry Lead, Laura Ashley-Wilson, 512-619 619-0143 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION ITIATION FOR ADULTS Have you been thinking about becoming a Roman Catholic? Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never got around to it. Maybe you aren t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too! Anyone interested in learning about the Catholic faith or inquiring about initiation in the Church is invited to call the Parish Office at 255-1389. CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING CORNER The family of faith can never turn a blind eye to the socioeconomic inequalities of those who are suffering among us. If we belong to Christ, we must always express a special concern for the marginalized. Expressing concern places our faith into practice as the epistle of James reminds us, Faith without works is dead. PUBLIC SQUARE ROSARY CRUSADE Join the 2018 Public Square Rosary Crusade Today!
