FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI The Body and Blood of Christ As pilgrims on the road of life we suffer from many hungers but the greatest hunger of all is the yearning for a deeper meaning to life. This is something that no earthly bread can satisfy. In our struggle to find purpose, the Eucharist is of great help because it is an invitation to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. By setting out on the road he travelled and by doing our utmost to imitate his life of caring and serving, we are gradually brought to see the importance of placing the common good of people before our own self- interest. If sharing in the Eucharist is to mean more than merely going to Mass and providing nourishment for our own private spiritual lives, we have to rise above the divisions and injustices of society which keep us apart and prevent us from forming a closer bond with the community of the Church. This will mean opening the doors of our hearts and of our homes and accepting people as God created them. This solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on God s most striking gift to us and a timely reminder to renew our faith and deepen our appreciation of the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. He is the living bread sent down from heaven as food for our souls to satisfy our deepest spiritual hunger. The Eucharist proclaims that Christ died for our sins so that we might have life and salvation. The Son of God could not have given us a greater proof of His love for us. This feast also provides us with an opportunity to look again at our table manners when we approach this sacred meal. We hold in our hands the Body and Blood of the Lord and the way we receive Him should reflect our reverence and respect. Years ago it was rare to see anyone in Church who was not dressed up, even the kids, and no one would dare to leave Mass early. While some still do dress up, they are in the minority. But what concerns me most is the lack of proper respect which is shown when people march up to receive Holy Communion and then walk right out the door. They never stay to say thank you and they never remain for the blessing. They leave Mass unfinished. It is like being invited as a guest to a dinner party and then slithering out the kitchen door before dessert is served. Now, I do understand that on a rare occasion a person might have to leave a bit early because of an emergency or some important appointment, however, most who leave early at St. Bernard s do it every week and it is always the same people. This is a bad habit, not an emergency. I am sure most of these people do not intend to be disrespectful, but in fact, they are. Let us celebrate this great gift today and keep His holy presence with us by the way we treat the Lord when we are with Him at Mass. A little reverence goes a long way in helping us honor God, who calls us to His service by loving one another. Fr. Jack 2
