Shawnee Valley District Treasurer for 2016 Margaret Hedden would like to remind you to send in your remittances as early as possible this year. You may keep track of the Shawnee Valley District's Pledge to Mission goal by watching the Goal Together box with the percentage achieved in each newsletter. Thank you!!! I would like to let you know a little about me. I have been on the district team for 13 years as the treasurer, program resource coordinator, nominations, and now as president. I live in Chillicothe, am widowed, have 2 sons, 4 grandchildren, and just retired after 31 years of teaching. I am keeping busy doing some of my favorite things such as reading, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, a new book club, substitute teaching, and a lot with church and UMW. I was so afraid that I would have nothing to do after retirement was I wrong!! United Methodist Women has introduced some social issues that will be emphasized for the next four years. They deal with climate justice, maternal and child health, economic inequality, and justice for different races and women. We would like to begin exploring and working on these priority areas. At our Spring Enrichment meeting being held at Jackson Christ, we will introduce these topics in more detail. Speaking of Spring Enrichment, I cordially invite each and every one in Shawnee Valley District to attend. We will be celebrating all the wondrous things God has done for us and what he has in store for our lives. There will be lots of singing praises to Him; awards for the Reading Program, Five-Star Units, Mission Today, and membership banner; Memorial service for those that have gone home to Jesus; book reviews; and much more. Put April 16 on your calendar and we can t wait to see you. May God s love and arms uphold you, Millie Hutchison 32 Page Rd. Chillicothe, OH 45601 740 773-0791

March 2016 Shawnee Signals page 2 March 2016 Shawnee Signals page 13 Nurturing Others and Growing Spiritually Helping Through the Easter Season Have you been busy with Lenten services? Have you been preparing yourself to honor God with your lives to mirror Christ? We are to put on the qualities of Christ kindness, humility, and forgiveness. When we treat others as Christ would, such as helping others as He did and love others as He taught, then we take on Christ's image. Jesus tells us in Mark 11:22, Have faith in God. Jesus is the source of my life and I need to spend time with God 0 the living water that sustains me. In John 4:10, Jesus answered the Samaritan woman If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and He would have given you living water. The water that Jesus gives us will become a spring of water welling up leading to eternal life. When you drink water just remember the power of Christ's living water. Thank Him for the life He offers you through this water His living water. This practice reminds me that Jesus is the source of my life and that I need to spend time with God the living water that sustains me. Are you living by your resolutions be prayerful, be trustful, be obedient, be forgiving, be faithful, and be a follower of Jesus. Keep spreading those spiritual seeds. Send cards, make phone calls, read a good inspirational book, study the Word and pray. Ask God to help you place as much priority on your relationship with Him as Jesus did. I also have been appointed as the Membership, Nurture, and Outreach Coordinator. I would like to extend an invitation to each unit that if you need any assistance with starting a unit, increasing membership in your unit, planning a memorial service for your unit, or planning a retreat, please contact me and I'll help in any way I can. God's Blessings to All, Karen Sue Evans, Social Action/Spiritual Growth Coordinator 5212 A US Hwy 52 Stout, Ohio 45684 740-858- 5315 READING CORNER Between the Pages Hello Ladies, Spring Enrichment is just around the corner. I'm receiving completed reading lists in the mail each day. It will be a pleasure to reward many of you with the annual reading certificates. Reading and prayer, each day, will improve our lives and bring us to that closer walk with our God. The new 2016 reading program booklet offers lots of new books for adults, youth and children. Ruth Everhart writes about her pilgrimage to Israel in "Chasing the Divine in the Holy Land." The book, "I Am Malala," shows us her courage and strength in fighting for women's right to education in Pakistan, and eventually throughout the world. A youth book, titled Crazy, gives us insight into the life of a teenager, whose mother was suffering from mental illness. Lots of good reading for each of us. Thank you to everyone for their help in getting the 2016 Shawnee Valley District United Methodist Women Yearbook completed!!!! I also want to thank all who have provided us with an email so that even more mission dollars can be spent on mission instead of printing and postage. Our next mission is to make it even easier for each local unit to report information about your officers, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, membership numbers, and members who have died. The National Office has now implemented a web link to enter your information and this information will be forwarded to the appropriate conference and district. That link is https://unitedmethodistwomenpublic.sharepoint.com/. Your Shepherdess will be visiting you over the next few months to help you with this transition. If you do not have access to a computer, she will then collect your information so that your District Membership, Nurture, and Outreach Coordinator, Karen Sue Evans, can send it in for you. Registration for the 2016 West Ohio Conference Mission u is upon us!!! You may register online through the West Ohio United Methodist Church website at www.westohioumc.org and clicking on the link for

March 2016 Shawnee Signals page 4 the session that you are interested in registering for depending on whether you want the 4-day school, weekend school, or day sampler. If you are a first-time adult or youth attendee or a Hispanic attendee, then you can apply for a scholarship by completing the registration form and check scholarship request. The deadline for a scholarship request is April 15, 2016. Let me wrap up by extending an invitation to each local unit to share about your local United Methodist mission projects that you are engaged in within your communities. Perhaps your local unit is partnered with the domestic violence shelter to offer a birthday celebration monthly for the women and children living at the shelter. Or maybe your local unit and the homeless shelter have partnered to offer Blessing Bags and Bibles to those who seek shelter. Whatever your mission project is, the Shawnee Valley District would like to begin a short article entitled Spotlight on God's Light where your project can be highlighted with a photo. If you are interested, please contact me no later than June 30, 2016 to be considered for the first article. Stephanie Wright Shawnee Valley District Secretary/Appointed Communications Coordinator 1417 17 th St. Portsmouth, OH 45662 740 981-8839 (C) divaqueen52@gmail.com Five Channels of Mission Giving Through their generosity United Methodist Women members help empower and improve the lives of women, youth and children in the United States and around the world. About 70 percent of Mission Giving funds from members go to programs and projects supporting women, children and youth. Around 20-30 percent stays with the local, district, and conference organizations of United Methodist Women for local mission. Only 9 percent covers administrative costs. Pledge to Mission An individual member's Pledge to Mission is the amount a woman gives to her local unit to help fulfill the Purpose of United Methodist Women. The conference United Methodist Women pledges a specific amount to United Methodist Women's national office for mission with women, children and youth and retains a designated percent to be used for district and conference administration and membership development expenses. World Thank Offering Spontaneous additional gifts can be given out of gratitude for God's abundance and in celebration of the joys of life. The World Thank Offering is an opportunity for individuals to respond to God's abundance and grace with spontaneous gifts of gratitude. The funds collected are used in the total program of mission carried on through United Methodist Women's national office in the United States and around the world. From teaching good growing techniques to providing nutrition and cooking education, United Methodist Women do as Jesus asked when he said to his disciples, You feed them. Sometimes we cannot actually feed those who are in need, but, by donating to this offering, you can help strengthen and enable communities to improve their future by supporting community nutritional programs through Mission Giving. You can send the offering to the district or conference UMW treasurer or bring it to the district or conference UMW annual meeting in the fall.
