Welcome to Chichester Cathedral This booklet contains all you will need to follow the Cathedral Eucharist. Please take it home to aid your daily devotions. The booklet includes suggestions about posture, but it is important that individuals feel comfortable. This booklet is also available in a format with larger print. Please ask the stewards if you would like a copy. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer at the communion, please indicate this to one of the stewards before the Service. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use this, please switch your hearing aid to t. A collection will be taken in the hymn after The Peace. Many regular, even if infrequent, members of the congregation give by standing order. This helps the Cathedral to budget. If you would like to know more about this method of giving please see the information on the Pew Sheet. GIFT AID - If you are a UK taxpayer, it would help enormously if you would place your donation in a Gift Aid envelope (included in the service booklet) before putting it in the collection, because we can then reclaim 25p from HMRC for every 1 you give. The Cathedral Choristers are educated at the Prebendal School. For more information about the outstanding educational opportunities offered by the school please visit www.prebendalschool.org.uk. Children s activities - A crèche and children s group, Pebbles (ages 2-11), meet in the Canons Vestry during this service. If your children would like to join the group please ask a steward for more information. Parents are welcome too! Toy bags are also available during the service. 2

ORDER OF SERVICE Celebrant The Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner Bishop of Chichester Please stand. Processional Hymn Sing to him in whom creation found its shape and origin; Spirit, moving on the waters, troubled by the God within; source of breath to all things breathing, life in whom all lives begin. Sing to God, the close companion of our inmost thoughts and ways; who, in showing us his wonders, is himself the power to gaze; and his will, to those who listen, by a still small voice conveys. Holy men, both priest and prophet, caught his accents, spoke his word; his the truth behind the wisdoms which as yet know not our Lord; he the love of God eternal, which is Christ was seen and heard. 3

Tell of how the ascended Jesus armed a people for his own; how a hundred men and women turned the known world upside down, to its dark and furthest corners by the Wind of Whitsun blown. Pray we then, O Lord the Spirit, on our lives descend in might; let thy flame break out within us, fire our hearts and clear our sight, till, white-hot in thy possession, we, too, set the world alight. Praise, O praise the Holy Spirit, praise the Father, praise the Word, Source, and Truth, and Inspiration, Trinity in deep accord: through thy Voice which speaks within us we thy creatures own thee Lord. Words: NEH 142 Michael Hewlett (1916-2000) Music: Regent Square Henry Smart (1813-1879) The Bishop greets the people: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Peace be with you and also with you. Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. 4

Prayers of Penitence The people are invited to call to mind and confess their sins: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5

The Choir sings Gloria in excelsis Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam, Domine Deus, rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis; qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu: in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ: O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art Most High, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Music: Messe Solennelle Jean Langlais (1907-1991) 6

The Collect Let us pray. God, who as at this time taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Please sit. First Reading Ezekiel 37: 1-14 Read by Simon Bell The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all round them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, Mortal, can these bones live? I answered, O Lord God, you know. Then he said to me, Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord. 7

So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. Then he said to me, Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely. Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 8

The Choir sings Psalm 104: 24, 27-32 Response sung by the Choir, then repeated by the congregation: O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth. All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it to them, they gather it; you open your hand and they are filled with good things. You hide your face and they are terrified; you take away their breath and they die and return to their dust. Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth. You send forth your Spirit and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in all his works. He looks at the earth and it trembles; he touches the mountains and they smoke. Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth. Music: A. Gregory Murray (1905-1992) 9

Second Reading Acts 2: 1-21 Read by Fiona Bell When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall 10

prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand. Hymn Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do. Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure, until with thee I will one will, to do and to endure. Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine, until this earthly part of me glows with the fire divine. Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity. Words: NEH 342 Edwin Hatch (1835-1889) 11 Music: Carlisle Charles Lockhart (1745-1815)

Gospel Reading When the Gospel is announced, the reader says The Lord be with you and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. John 15: 26-27; 16: 4b-15 Jesus spoke to his disciples: When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, Where are you going? But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 12

All remain standing as the Gospel Procession returns, and then sit for the Sermon. Sermon The Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner Bishop of Chichester Please stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. The Nicene Creed We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 13

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of Intercession The Bishop introduces the prayers of intercession. Please sit or stand. These responses are used: Lord, in your mercy or Lord, hear us. hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us. And at the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. 14

The Peace Please stand. God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Alleluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace. All remain standing to sing the offertory hymn: Hymn Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 15

Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Words: NEH 137 Bianco da Siena (d. 1434) tr. R. F. Littledale (1833-1890) Music: Down Ampney Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you All and al - so with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. 16

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, your only Son our Lord. This day we give you thanks because in fulfilment of your promise you pour out your Spirit upon us, filling us with your gifts, leading us into all truth, and uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith. Your Spirit gives us grace to call you Father, to proclaim your gospel to all nations and to serve you as a royal priesthood. Therefore we join with angels and archangels, and with all those in whom the Spirit dwells, to proclaim the glory of your name, for ever praising you and singing: The Choir sings Sanctus Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth, pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. The Eucharistic Prayer continues: We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. 17

On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Praise to you, Lord Jesus: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life: Lord Jesus, come in glory. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. 18

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. All A - men. Please stand or sit. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The Bishop breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. 19

Giving of Communion The Bishop invites the people to communion: Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The Bishop and people receive communion. Members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive communion if they wish. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, please come to the altar rail with everybody else and bow your head. During communion, the Choir sings Agnus Dei Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. 20

Hymn during Communion Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire; thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart: Thy blessèd unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love; enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight: Anoint and cheer our soilèd face with the abundance of thy grace: keep far our foes, give peace at home; where thou art guide no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of Both, to be but One; that through the ages all along this may be our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Words: NEH 138 John Cosin (1594-1672) based on Veni, creator Spiritus Music: Veni Creator, mode viii Melody from Vesperale Romanum 21

Prayer after Communion Let us pray. Please stand. Faithful God, who fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy Spirit and opening to every race and nation the way of life eternal: open our lips by your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. Hymn Holy Spirit, come, confirm us in the truth that Christ makes known; we have faith and understanding through your promised light alone. 22

Holy Spirit, come, console us, come as Advocate to plead, loving Spirit from the Father, grant in Christ the help we need. Holy Spirit, come, renew us, come yourself to make us live, holy through your loving presence, holy through the gifts you give. Holy Spirit, come, possess us, you the love of Three in One, Holy Spirit of the Father, Holy Spirit of the Son. Words: NEH 140 Brian Foley (1919-2000) Music: All for Jesus John Stainer (1840-1901) The Dismissal The Lord be with you and also with you. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who has made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and for ever. Amen. The Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and strengthen you to proclaim the word and works of God; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. 23

The congregation joins the Choir in singing the dismissal: Priest Go in the peace of Christ. Alleluia. Alleluia. All Music after the Service Toccata in F BuxWV 157 Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637-1707) Out of consideration to the organist, and those members of the congregation who wish to listen to the voluntary, you are kindly requested to keep talking to a quiet minimum until it has concluded.
