BIBLE 185 PAULINE EPISTLES

1 Paul, an apostle not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead 2 and all the brothers who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. 10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. Author - Paul Date - 49-50 AD The book of Galatians has been called the Magna Carta of spiritual liberty. Many believe it was primary in Luther s thought leading to the Reformation. Luther said, The epistle to the Galatians is my epistle. To it I am, as it were, in wedlock. Galatians is my Katherine [the name of his wife]." It was written in response to an attack on the gospel of grace. Recipients: Paul had started churches in the cities of Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe (Acts 13:14-14:23). Galatians was a cyclical letter meant to be read by all these churches. The book is broken down in 3 parts: Chapters 1-2 deal with Paul s relationship to the churches. He is their founder and spiritual father. Chapters 3-4 are doctrinal. Paul lays out the arguments that we are saved by grace and not by works.

Chapters 5-6 are practical. Paul explains the way that grace and right living work together. Key Themes Key themes in Galatians include the following: Salvation (being right with God and set free from sin s curse) comes by grace alone through a faith-commitment to Christ. God gave the law to reveal the nature and power of sin, but it was never meant to (or able to) provide salvation from sin. In Christ, humanly devised artificial class distinctions are removed. By grace, believers are adopted into God s family and become His heirs. Genuine believers demonstrate character traits (fruit) that the Holy Spirit generates in them. Christians are expected to extend mutual help and support to one another in the community of faith. They are to do good to all people. Introduction 1 Paul, an apostle not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead Paul begins by asserting his apostleship. Jesus appointed the 12 as apostles, Judas was later replaced. Apostles were sent out messengers. It was accepted in the early church that the apostles had been eyewitnesses of Jesus. Paul had always had to defend his apostleship because he was not one of the twelve. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 1 Cor. 15:3ff Paul had a unique appointment by Jesus Christ, after His death, burial, and resurrection. Paul mentions God the Father and Jesus together often to affirm the equality of their divinity.

2 and all the brothers who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: The men who traveled with Paul were witnesses of how God had used Paul. Therefore, they could testify to the fact that he was an apostle. Paul had the authority to write to the church because he had founded them. 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, Grace and peace was an early Christian greeting. Believers is Brazil and other places still greet each other with grace and peace. The Hebrews greeted each other with shalom which meant peace. The Romans greeted each other with chara which meant joy. Their peace or joy was affected by the changing circumstance of the ancient world. To Christians grace and peace was never changing. Grace was the source of their salvation and peace was the result of salvation - nothing could take that away. Grace reminds us of our liberty in Christ. Several times in the book Paul mentions that the Judaizers wanted the Galatians to put themselves under the bondage of the law. The opposite of grace. 4 who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Jesus gave Himself for our sins (grace), that is the heart of the gospel. We could not pay the price for our own sin, therefore Jesus had to pay our debt. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 1Peter 2:24 Deliver carries the idea of rescue. Rescue reminds us that it is something we cannot do ourselves. We need someone else to save us from the evil. Grace rescue s us out of the world. The evil age is the satanic system that has ruled our world since the fall. Only when we come to Christ can we withstand the lure of the devil. according to the will of our God and Father, That was God s plan, His will, from the very beginning. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, John 1:12

5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Paul s purpose in life was to bring honor and glory to God. Paul wanted his life and the life of every believer to bring glory to God. 31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31 Purpose of the Letter 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel The word Paul uses for amazed means astounded or bewildered. He cannot understand why they are deserting him. The word quickly can mean a short amount of time or easily, here it probably conveys both ideas. Paul is amazed that so soon and so without talking to him the Galatians are walking away. Deserting is a military term that means to voluntarily walk away. The tense shows that they have not completely left, but are in the process. There Paul wants to turn them around before they make a tragic mistake. If they deserted the way of salvation, they would be deserting the God of salvation. We cannot call Him God and not accept His truth. As crazy as it sounds they were not denying the gospel, they were trying to improve it. 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. Another means one just like the other. Paul was saying it s not the same, it is a perversion of the truth. The trouble he talks about is literally shaking back and forth. It means emotional disturbance or an unsettled mind. The Judaizers were confusing everyone. To distort the gospel means to reverse or pervert the original truth. It has the sense of saying just the opposite The gospel Paul preached was salvation by grace alone which resulted in good works. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good

works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Eph. 2:8-10 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed The false teachers who were leading the Galatians astray probably professed to have impressive credentials. The probably said they came from the Jerusalem church on the authority of James. We know they were not representing the Jerusalem church and the apostles because of the Jerusalem council. 7 And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, 9 and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. 10 Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will. Acts 15:7-11 Paul was obviously speaking hypothetically. Any angel from heaven would have come bringing the same good news God had inspired the apostles to write about. 10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. Paul had spent much of his life trying to please men. Trying to win the approval of fellow Jews by persecuting the Church. But since his conversion, he had put his life on the line many times in the service of God not man. It was in Galatia that Paul was stoned and left for dead because of his preaching. He says he is a servant of Christ. The word means a slave that is owned by the master and is bound to obey his every command. 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 1 Peter 1:18-19
