WHY READ YOUR BIBLE? TOP 7 REASONS TO READ YOUR BIBLE!

7. READ THE BIBLE: SO YOU CAN GROW

By it we grow! Acts 20:32 And now I entrust you to God and to the message of his grace. This message is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

6. READ THE BIBLE: TO BE ENCOURAGED

It teaches and encourages us Romans 15:4: For everything that was written in former times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and through encouragement of the scriptures we may have hope.

5. READ THE BIBLE: TO GET HELP IN TIMES OF NEED

It helps us when we most need help Psalm 119:25-28: I collapse in the dirt. Revive me with your word! Help me to understand what your precepts mean! Then I can meditate on your marvelous teachings. I collapse from grief. Sustain me by your word!

4. READ THE BIBLE: TO ASSIST YOUR CONSCIENCE

It assists our consciences Hebrews 4:12 12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any doubleedged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart

3. READ THE BIBLE: TO GET EQUIPPED

It equips us for good works 2 Timothy 3:16 Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.

2. READ THE BIBLE: TO AVOID SIN

It helps us avoid sin Psalm 119:9-16: How can a young person maintain a pure life? By guarding it according to your instructions! With all my heart I seek you. Do not allow me to stray from your commands! In my heart I store up your words, so I might not sin against you. You deserve praise, O Lord! Teach me your statutes! AVERT MY EYES, AVERT MY EYES

1. READ THE BIBLE: BECAUSE YOU (SHOULD) LOVE IT!

Psalm 119:47-48: We (SHOULD) love it! I will find delight in your commands, which I love. I will lift my hands to your commands, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes. CAN YOU LOVE IT IF YOU HAVEN T SEEN IT?

RECAP: 7 REASONS TO READ YOUR BIBLE 1. YOU LOVE IT 2. AVOID SIN 3. GET EQUIPPED 4. ASSIST YOUR CONSCIENCE 5. GET HELP 6. BE ENCOURAGED 7. GROW

HOW DO WE BEGIN?

1. BEGIN WITH PRAYER

1. BEGIN WITH PRAYER Ps 143.10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. Psalm 119:18: Open my eyes so I can truly see the marvelous things in your law! 21

2. RELY ON THE SPIRIT

2. RELY ON HOLY SPIRIT God has revealed these to us by the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, 2. RELY ON HOLY SPIRIT NO STUDY BIBLES even the deep things of God. 1 Corinthians 2:6-16

3. PAY ATTENTION TO CIRCUMSTANCES

Psalm 119:147-48 : Our Priorities I am up before dawn crying for help. I find hope in your word. My eyes anticipate the nighttime hours, so that I can meditate on your word.

READ THE BIBLE WITH PURPOSE

READ WITH PURPOSE: Scholars Say Just reading the words in a book is passive activity that will not allow you to remember and recall what you are learning. You need to take a more active role in the reading process. Use the questions provided or turn headings/subheadings into questions. 31

READING WITH PURPOSE: SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Reading with a purpose: Effects Heightened alertness Posture change Eyes alert Scanning, looking, searching, seeking active, not passive reading.

GETTING TO KNOW GOD IS OUR PRIMARY PURPOSE 34

KNOWING GOD. KNOWING JESUS WHO IS GOD? WHAT IS HE LIKE? HOW CAN WE KNOW GOD BETTER? HOW CAN WE KNOW HIM MORE INTIMATELY? WHAT KIND OF MAN WAS JESUS? HOW DID HE ACT TOWARDS PEOPLE? HOW DID HE RESPOND TO PEOPLE? HOW CAN WE FOLLOW JESUS? 35

GETTING TO KNOW OURSELVES AS OUR SECONDARY PURPOSE HOW DO WE LIVE A GODLY LIFE? HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT S RIGHT? HOW DO WE PRAY? HOW CAN WE PLEASE GOD? 36

SIMPLE QUESTIONS TO APPLY TO NEARLY ANY PART OF THE BIBLE: What does this passage say about God/Jesus? What is God/Jesus like in this passage? What does this passage say to me to change me? What encouragement or hope is in this for me? Does this text tell me what to do or not do? 37
