Pastor s Reflection Annual Conference 2016 Jesus is Calling Us Out I invite you to read the Annual Conference report written by Tom Strauch and Michael Farmer, our Lay Delegates. This annual conference marks the completion of Cara s and my 7th year at Faith UMC. We are honored to be in continued ministry with you and we look forward to our 8th year being our best yet. In many ways the Annual Conference s focus on vital congregations and the importance of reaching out in mission and ministry is being modeled at Faith UMC. Jesus is calling us out and we are all in. Pastor Steve 2016 East Ohio Annual Conference Report The heart of the conference was the vision for a vital church. The theme was Jesus is Calling Us Out. That is, the real work of the church is out outside these walls and also that we re being personally called out... time to step up and make good on our promise. In our review we learned that the United Methodist church in East Ohio is continuing to slowly shrink. In my brief report I will highlight two crucial responses to this challenge: 1. Emphasis on youth: they are the future of our church. 2. Emphasis on outreach and cross-cultural engagement; we are called to be disciples to the world. First - Our youth are already stepping up to the challenge. For instance, at Youth Annual Conference, they passed three resolutions: to accommodate disabilities in our local churches, raise environmental awareness to preserve our common planet, and to encourage our churches to be inclusive, inviting and accepting everyone. Impressively, they are taking the initiative themselves on these agendas. Our youth also took the initiative to underwrite a film to raise awareness of Human Trafficking, Shadow on the Heartland ; they raised money themselves. At conference we ratified a budget that strongly supports our youth programs. We at Faith must do our part by mentoring our youth to be leaders of the church. Second - We celebrate many vital outreach ministries supported by East Ohio Conference. We are called to care for those outside the church, and our caring vitalizes our church. Some established missions are: the 3-C (Churches, Clinics, and Classrooms) mission and global ministries in Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, Russia, Liberia, Zimbabwe, and many others, UMCOR, the United Methodist disaster relief effort, campus ministries, prison ministry, food pantries, homeless shelters, and developmental disability care. I counted 57 diverse ministries that demonstrate the vitality of our church. These are opportunities, near and far, for each of us to get engaged and extend your personal reaching out; the need always outstrips the resources get active in one. Importantly, we ratified a budget that s designed to fully support our plans for the future and is also balanced and stable. We have aligned our resources with our plans. Finally, this was Bishop John Hopkins 12th and final year as our bishop. He retires this August. Our new bishop will be determined at Jurisdictional Conference, July 13-16, in Peoria, IL. Pastor

Cara will be attending as a 1st alternate delegate. Bishop Hopkins outstanding leadership was celebrated and he was honored with the gift of a custom crafted electric guitar with which he rocked the house. Bishop Hopkins created the 3Cs initiative that we support with 40% of our 20/20 Vision Acting on Faith tithe. So, at its core, the week at conference was a great call to respond to the challenge: A call to mentor our youth. And a call for us to reach out beyond the walls of our church to engage our community and our world. Children and Families Outreach Programs Little Free Library by Faith s 5th/6th Grade VBS Adventure Students At Cave Quest VBS we learned about shining our light for Jesus. Building a Little Free Library helps us to share the love of Jesus one book at a time in our church neighborhood. What is a Little Free Library: Little Free Libraries are found all over the world. Now there is one in North Canton, Ohio. It s a box painted in a bright color that is filled with books. Free books people can take home to keep or read while relaxing on the bench we built. People can also bring books to share. It s important to take care of our Little Free Library so that our neighbors can feel welcome and enjoy the books. Where is it: Faith UMC s Little Free Library is located at the 9th Street entrance of the church, near the circle driveway so people who walk through the neighborhood can find it and use it. Why did we make it: So people can enjoy it. It s great for people who stop by the church or walk through the church neighborhood to find it and know that Faith UMC cares about people and wants to help people read and learn about God. Special thank you to the Trustees and Mr. Miner for helping us and for teaching us how to install the post and lay the pavers for the bench. Thank you to Mr. Schmucker who provided the wood for the library. Thank you to our VBS Crew Leaders, Michael Farmer, Kevin Manfred, Michelle Jacobs, and Tallie Paz for working with us on this VBS mission. Thank you to the 20/20 fund for helping to make it all possible. To learn more about Little Free Libraries, visit their website at: https://littlefreelibrary.org/. Geocaching by Faith s 5th/6th Grade VBS Students Hunting for geocaches is a fun hobby. Geocaching is a treasure hunting game where people hide a container and register it on the geocaching website. Using clues and GPS coordinates people can search to find the geocache container we hid at Faith UMC. You can find the GPS coordinates on the geocaching website, then start from your home (or wherever you are) and follow the coordinates and clues to find the hidden geocache. We placed something special inside the geocache hidden at Faith church so people finding it will know that Jesus loves them. In just 5 days, 7 people have visited Faith UMC s geocache. To learn more about geocaching and to get the coordinates and clues to find Faith UMC s geocache visit www.geocaching.com. You can even leave a message for us after you ve found Faith s geocache.
