Great Treasure Day! God s Word is a Treasure - Truthfulness Use this lesson on the day your club gives away Bibles to clubbers. We recommend replacing your weekly lesson with this lesson in its entirety, but you may choose to adapt and combine both lessons. Lesson Overview: This lesson emphasizes the value of God s Word as a great treasure. Many children may never have had their own Bible and some may not have ever seen a Bible! This lesson is intended to introduce kids to The One True God and the Bible, His Word, or HIStory. Kids need to know that God s Word contains absolute truth and is God s message to all people, which includes each of them. We want kids to remember that God s Word is true, trustworthy, and reliable. It is a valuable treasure that kids now have in their hands. Bible Story: Josiah Finds a Great Treasure - 2 Kings 22:1-23:25 (page 412) Memory Link: Psalm 119:162 (page 648) Character Word: Truthfulness knowing and telling the real facts about something Teaching Objective: Because I know God s Word is true, I can trust what God says. Supplies Needed for This Lesson Get Connected: None Memory Link Activity: Option 1: KBC Study Bibles, coins Option 2: balloons Bible Connection Leader: Attachment 1 Surf Team Time: Memory Link Cards, Highlighters Make-It-Stick Review Game Leader: Option 1: KBC Study Bibles Option 2 Get Connected It s All About Relationships! (10-15 minutes) As kids gather, instruct them to sit in a circle with their Surf Team Leader and discuss the following to prepare them to receive their KBC Study Bibles: 1. How excited are you to receive you new KBC Study Bibles? 2. What makes a Bible so special? (Remind kids that everything in the Bible is true.) 3. How can you take care of your Bible and treat it respectfully? 4. Name a place you can read your Bible. (Be sure school is one of the places mentioned. Encourage kids to follow school rules and read their Bibles at appropriate times.) 5. How important is it to be truthful? Presenting Bibles 1. Explain how special and valuable the Bible is. Remind them it is great treasure. It is God s Word and should be treated respectfully and has great value. 2. Give Bibles individually to each child by name. Make each child feel like they have received a special treasure. If you have a large club, you may need to present Bibles in Surf Teams for the sake of time. 3. Allow kids a few minutes to look at their Bibles and talk with their neighbors about what they see inside. 4. Lead a time of prayer, asking God to speak to kids through the words in the Bible.

2" GREAT"TREASURE"DAY!! Memory Link (10 minutes) I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure. Psalm 119:162 Introduce: Have you ever seen anyone with a metal detector on a beach? What are they looking for? Yes, treasure. Well, this year in KiDs Beach Club we will also be looking for treasure, not on a beach, but in God s Word, the Holy Bible. And you know God s Word is the greatest treasure on earth. Explain: Tell kids to turn to the tip-in page About the Bible (right after page 242) and briefly explain how the Bible is organized and written. Help kids understand that the Old Testament points to the need for all people to have a Savior, someone who forgives and saves from sin. The New Testament is about Jesus, who is the Savior that God had promised in the Old Testament. Tell kids to turn to the tip-in pages How to use This Bible (behind the front cover) and explain that each verse has an address and can be located using the book, chapter, and verse. Show them the Table of Contents (page vi) and lead clubbers to find Psalm 119:162 (page 648). Guide the kids to read the verse aloud several times. Challenge them to close their Bibles and say the verse without looking. This verse tells us that God s Word is a great treasure. Ask kids to share what they would do if they found a hidden treasure. Explain that God s Word is a great treasure because it is God s message to us. And it s not a hidden treasure. God s wants people to read His Word and know more about Him. Today s Character Word is truthfulness. Everything in the Bible is true. It contains true stories of real people. The Bible reveals the truth about God. You can depend on the Bible because it is the truth. OPTION 1: Flip For Treasure SUPPLIES: Bible, coin Guide kids to sit in a circle. Place one KBC Study Bible in the middle of the group. Open it to Psalm 119:162. Kids will take turns gently flipping the coin so it lands on the Bible. If it lands heads up the child who tosses will say the verse. If it lands tails up the child who tosses will select another child to say the verse. OPTION 2: Balloon Bonanza SUPPLIES: Inflated balloons Form small groups. Give each group an inflated balloon. Instruct groups to work together to keep the balloon from touching the ground, gently tapping it up as each word of the verse is recited. Form new groups and play again. For an extra challenge, give groups more than one balloon. HANDS ON HELP: Every leader will need to help assist kids in finding verses as directed. Clubbers can also help each other. To keep good order, once kids find a verse or page, train them to place their finger on the page and look at you. That way, you ll know when all the kids have found the verse and are ready to listen.

GREAT"TREASURE"DAY!" 3! Bible Connection (10-15 minutes) Josiah finds a Great Treasure (10-15 minutes) 2 Kings 22:1-23:25 SUPPLIES: Attachment 1 PREPARE: Share Your Story: Share a personal story of how special your Bible is to you. Keep it brief and age appropriate. About the Bible: All the stories we will teach in Beach Club are part of the Bible s one BIG story. Read this word for me. (Show them Attachment 1) HIStory. God s Word is authentic history and it is HIS story! The Bible was written a very long time ago but everything it says is just as true today as it was when it was written. Introduce the Story: Today s story is about a king who found a great treasure. Lead the kids to find 2 Kings 22 (page 412). Challenge them to find the name of the king in today s story (Josiah). Guide them to read 2 Kings 2:1 to discover how hold Josiah was when he became king. (8 years old). Leave your Bible open and tell the following story in your own words. 2 Kings 22:1-2: Josiah was 8 years old when he became king of Israel. He did what was right and tried to lead the people to do things God s way. 2 Kings 22:3-13: After Josiah was a little older, workers were repairing the temple and one of the priests found a special book. It was a Book of the Law part of the Holy Scripture from God. The priest knew it was an important, special treasure so they took the Book of the Law to the king. When King Josiah heard the words of the book read, he was so upset that he tore his clothes. He knew the Book of the Law was true. He realized their country had not been living God s way. They had been worshipping false idols and had turned away from God. The Book of the Law said that God would punish Josiah and his people for not listening to and obeying the truth. 2 Kings 22:14-20: Now there was a prophetess named Huldah who spoke God s truth to people. Josiah asked her what he should do since the people had broken God s law. Huldah said, God sees that you have humbled yourself, listened to the truth, and want to change and do things God s way. God will not punish you because you choose to follow the truth. 2 Kings 23:1-25: Josiah brought together all the elders of Israel and they made a promise to God to follow everything in the Book of the Law. They tore down the false idols and worshipped the One True God. There was no other king like Josiah who turned away from sin and turned to God with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might. Discuss: Josiah realized that God s Word was a treasure; he believed it was true. Josiah led His nation to repent, or turn away, from the sin of worshipping false idols and led them back to worship the One True God. God s Word still speaks truth for people today. When you read the Bible, God s Holy Spirit will reveal how your sin separates you from God. The Bible says each of us deserve to be punished for our sin, just like the people of Israel deserved to be punished for their sin. And just like God offered forgiveness

4" GREAT"TREASURE"DAY!! when Josiah led the people to repent, God also offers forgiveness for sin when you turn away from your sin and turn toward God. Gospel Connection: Lead the kids to find the tip-in section God Loves You and Has a Plan for Your Life (between pages 626-627). Encourage the kids to follow along as you use these pages as an outline to explain God s plan of salvation. God wants to be your FOREVER FRIEND. All you need to do is three simple things: ASK, BELIEVE and CHOOSE to FOLLOW. Simply ASK God to forgive your sin and come into your life. Next, BELIEVE that Jesus died on the cross to pay the punishment for your sin. Then, CHOOSE to FOLLOW by turning away from your sin and choosing to live God s way. If you want to talk to your Surf Team Leader or me about how you can ASK Jesus to be your Forever Friend then come and see me right after I pray. (Lead in closing prayer and dismiss to decision counseling and transition.) Application/Transition: If you want to drive all the way across the country, what could you study to know which way to go? That s right, a map. Would you look at it just one time or many times in order to make sure you were on the right track as you change roads? The Bible is a book that is like a road map. God wants to give us direction for each part of our lives. But just like a map, if we don t ever look at it, if we don t study it, it can t help us. The Bible is full of knowledge and truth that can help us. It is a book that teaches us the truth about God and what is right. It tells us what God has done for us and what we should do in response to Him. More At Home: Draw kids attention to the KBC Study Bible tip-in pages Spending Time With God (between pages 242-243). Remind kids that reading the Bible and praying every day will help them learn more truth about God. Encourage kids to find a place to read their Bibles every day. DECISION COUNSELING: Always be prepared to talk with a child about how to become a Christian. Make sure you have your church s decision supplies in your tub or readily accessible. Every Beach Club leader should regularly review the Leading a Child to Christ section inside your Leadership Manual (pages 40-42) and check out the additional resources on the Club Leader Tools page on the KBC Website. WHY KiDS BEACH CLUB? Many people ask why we chose the beach as our theme. Easy! It s where kids go to have fun and find the great treasure, God s Word! The Great Treasure Day is a natural opportunity to remind kids what KiDs Beach Club is all about - making Jesus cool at school.

GREAT"TREASURE"DAY!" 5! Surf Team Time (5-10 Minutes) 1. Before you begin ask if there are any students who would like to talk with someone about praying to ask Jesus to become their Forever Friend. If so, let them go to the designated area. 2. Give each child a Memory Link Card. Review today s Memory Link and Character Word. Guide kids to use cards to mark today s story in their KBC Bibles. Lead them to highlight today s Memory Link. 3. Use most of your Surf Team Time to talk with the kids about their Bibles. Allow them to explore, point things out, and ask questions. 4. What new fact about the Bible did you learn today? 5. Tell something you know the Bible teaches. How can you know that teaching is true? (Because everything in the Bible is true.) 6. When and where will you read your Bible when you get home? 7. You received a Bible today as a free gift. Do you have a Bible at home? Maybe you already have a KBC Devotional Bible? Who can you give that Bible to? When will you give it? THE BIBLE IN SCHOOL What do kids need to know? Many people are misinformed about whether or not it s legal for kids to have a Bible at school. Reassure kids that it is NOT against the law for them to have a Bible in school. Here s what kids can LEGALLY do with their Bibles in school. Bring it! Read it in free reading time. Share it with a friend (during non-instructional times). Use it to invite a classmate to Beach Club! The last tip-in page in the KBC Study Bible (just in front of the back cover) contains more ideas on how kids can make Jesus cool at their school. ITS ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS: The purpose of Surf Team Time is to build relationships with kids. Use the Bibles as a focus for connection and conversation. You may adjust your schedule to allow for extra time in Surf Teams today so kids can dig in and explore their Bibles.

6" GREAT"TREASURE"DAY!! Make It Stick! Review Game (10 minutes) OPTION 1: Find It! (This option does not use Review Questions; it gets kids hands on with their Bibles.) SUPPLIES: KBC Study Bibles Kids will remain seated with their Surf Teams. The leader will call out a page in the KBC Study Bible (tip-in pages, Bible books, special features). When kids find that page, they will put their finger on the page and stand. If kids have trouble finding a particular page, you can use the page numbers as a hint. The first team where every child finds the page and stands earns a point for their team. The team with the most points wins. After each point, take a moment to share a nugget of truth about that page. (For example, John 3:16 is the most highly recognized verse of the Bible. Use the following or choose your own: Find John 3:16 (page 1151) Find the tip-in page Jesus: The Perfect Example (between pages 1010-1011) Find the first page of the New Testament (page 1021, this page is not numbered) Find the glossary (pages 1389-1420) Find the first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1 (page 1, this page is not numbered) Find the last verse of the Bible, Revelation 22:21 (page 1385) Find the tip-in page The Ten Commandments (between pages 242-243) OPTION 2: Musical Bibles SUPPLIES: Bibles, music Each surf team will sit in a circle. Give one child in each group a Bible. When you play the music, the kids will pass the Bible around the circle. When the music stops, the Surf Team Leader will ask the child holding the Bible a review question. Continue until all questions have been asked. Review Questions 1. What is the Great Treasure? (God Word, the Bible) 2. What is today s Character Word? (truthfulness) 3. In what book do you find truth? (The Bible) 4. What are the two parts of the Bible called? (Old Testament and New Testament) 5. How many books are there in the Bible? (66) 6. Who wrote the Bible? (God inspired men to write down His words.) 7. Recite today s Memory Link, Psalm 119:162. (I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure.) 8. Who was the king in today s story? (Josiah) 9. What was the treasure Josiah discovered? (holy scriptures) 10. What did Josiah lead the people to do? (turn away from sin and turn to God)
