1 Sunday, December 3, 2017 - First Sunday of Advent AN ADVENT PRAYER - COME, LORD JESUS, COME Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send Your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We who have so much to do seek, quiet spaces, to hear Your voice each day. We who are anxious over many things, especially during these stressful times, look forward to Your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways, long for the coming joy of Your kingdom. We whose hearts are heavy and burdened, seek the joy of Your presence. We, Your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light To You we say Come, Lord Jesus, come. This prayer - Come, Lord Jesus, come can be repeated slowly and deliberately over and over again. It can become a Mantra Prayer. ADVENT IS THE FIRST SEASON OF OUR NEW YEAR OF GRACE: The word Advent comes from the Latin word Advenio meaning coming into. Advent is our time of coming into a new Church year. It introduces our coming into another opportunity of God s friendship and grace for us in Jesus through the Church. Advent particularly prepares us for the birthing event of our Bethlehem God into our human condition. You are encouraged to pray the Advent prayer above frequently during this season. Prayer in the presence of the exposed Sacrament during the exposition hours in the Cenacle Chapel makes another ideal environment for inviting the Lord into one s heart through the Mantra Prayer - Come, Lord Jesus, come. The Advent Wreath: It is thought that the origins of the Advent wreath lie in the pagan customs of the far northern countries of Scandinavia - customs that originated long before the birth of Christ. Since the people couldn t do farm work outdoors in the winter, they brought into their homes the wheels of their wagons, decorated them with greens, put candles on them and hung them from the ceiling on a wire. Then they would twirl them to become a glowing prayer to the god of light in this time of winter darkness. Christians later adapted this custom to celebrate the coming birth of the Light of the World. The four candles are lighted in succession on the Sundays of Advent. This custom began in homes, and has now become a prominent symbol in churches to mark the Advent season. From The Little Blue Book Blessing of An Advent Wreath: Lord God, your Church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior, who enlightens our hearts, and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin. Pour forth your blessings upon us as we light the candles of this wreath; may their light reflect the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, for ever and ever. Amen. LOURDES WATER DISTRIBUTION: When Mary appeared to Bernadette in Lourdes in 1858, she identified herself as.i am the Immaculate Conception. During one of the apparitions, she asked Bernadette to go and drink at the spring and wash in it. Drinking the water from the spring and washing in it is a special feature of pilgrimages to the Shrine in Lourdes. The water from Lourdes like the water of baptism is a source of blessings. A limited number of small containers with water from Lourdes will be available to parishioners after all Masses next Friday on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. They will be available (one per family) by the icon of Mary near the pulpit. PARISH RESOURCE GUIDE: Three thousand copies of the Parish Resource Guide have just been published for distribution to our parish families. The Resource Guide has been in ongoing stages of development over this past year under the sponsorship of our Stewardship & Development Council. The booklet is an extensive overview of the ministries and different forms of service active in Our Mother of Sorrows Parish. The booklets were distributed after all Masses during this first weekend of Advent. Thanks to Madeleine Crespo, Melinda Caballero, Rocio Zamora, José Osuna and José Merino for finalizing the Resource Guide. A special thanks to a number of sponsors and to our Parish Endowment Trust, our primary sponsor, for underwriting the printing cost of the Parish Resource Guide. Copies are available from the Parish Office. Come Home PERSONAL INVITATIONS TO ALIENATED CATHOLICS: If you know of a person or persons who are alienated from the Church for whatever reason and who are basically inactive, would you please list their name, address and telephone number for a personal invitation from the parish to the upcoming series? It would be appropriate that you would let the person know that you have submitted their name for this personal invitation from the parish. In doing so, you are becoming their sponsor, praying for their positive response. Inactive/alienated Catholics who come to the series find it most helpful when their sponsor comes to the first session with them. Do not underestimate the power of this kind of personal invitation and support. When done in faith, it personalizes God s invitation and saving grace. The first session in the After-Christmas series will be Monday, January 8, 2018. Name(s) Address ACA INVITATION/REGISTRATION Please send a personal invitation to the following person(s) to the next ACA series: If there are others, please list them on a separate sheet of paper, attach it to this registration form and return it to: An Invitation, 1800 S. Kolb Road, Tucson, AZ, 85710, place in the collection, or drop it off at the Parish Office. Phone Zip

2 BISHOPS TRANSITIONS: We welcome our newly installed bishop Bishop Edward Weisenburger. Our thanks to Bishop Kicanas who has exercised a very good episcopal leadership during his tenure as our bishop. He will continue to reside here in Tucson and help out in different ministry situations. Let s keep our new bishop and our retired bishop in our prayers. Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection December 3, 2017 Mark 13:33-37 Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. How much of our lives do we spend asleep? Literally, about a third, but practically speaking, a great deal more than that. Our routines dull our appreciation of life, as we wander on autopilot through our responsibilities. We rarely Chop wood! Fetch water! like the Buddhist monks who practice making every act both a prayer and a celebration. We eat many meals without tasting our food, slump numbly in front of the computer or television hardly aware of what s in front of us. Make a pledge this Advent season: to be aware, awake, and alive. Walk with a purpose, feeling the movement in your muscles and bones, body, and blood. Lift your gaze and notice what s around you. Listen to the person talking to you. Feel your feelings. Breathe. ***Consider keeping an Advent journal. Write down what you see, feel, and think with a renewed attention to the gift of life. The Knights of Columbus Regina Cleri Council # 5133 is inviting parishioners of Our Mother of Sorrows to join in a prayerful Sunday afternoon today, December 3. Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Rosary crusade prayer will be hosted by Richard and Mary Ellen Valenzuela at the Regina Cleri Council at 1330 S Mountain View Ave. Prayers will start at 3:00 PM. Father Peyton once said, The family that prays together stays together. Bring your favorite dish to share for a small gathering after the prayers. SOMETHING GREAT JUST GOT BETTER! Taxpayers contributed more than $12 million dollars to Arizona s Catholic Tuition Support Organization (CTSO) last year and provided tuition scholarships for students in schools throughout the Diocese of Tucson. Thank you! Visit www.ctso-tucson.org for online giving DID YOU KNOW Advent thought: There are doorways all the time where we encounter one another and have opportunity to be present. Our houses and offices have doors. These are thresholds where we meet and can be awake to one another. Advent Communal Penance Schedule for Eastside Parishes St. Joseph Parish 14 December, 6 pm Our Mother of Sorrows 17 December, 7:30 pm St. Cyril of Alexandria 19 December, 7 pm St. Rita in the Desert 19 December, 7 pm Corpus Christi 20 December, 6 pm St. Francis de Sales 21 December, 7 pm RCIA Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome Congratulations to the 5 Adults and 10 Children participating in the Rite of Acceptance and 9 Adults participating in the Rite of Welcome at the 9am Mass today. The Rite of Acceptance is for candidates who have completed the period of the pre-catechumenate and are ready to declare their intention to the Church, and the Church, in turn, accepts them as persons who intend to become its members. The Rite of Welcome is to welcome baptized but previously uncatechized adults who are seeking to complete their Christian initiation and be received into full communion of the Catholic Church. ADVENT RETREAT Saturday, December 16, 8:30am Mass 12n. This retreat offers a prayerful opportunity to slow down in the midst of this busy season and reflect on the gracious gifts of Advent. What is offered to us? How might we respond? The Advent and Christmas seasons are a call to see God everywhere, and especially in those places we would not expect to find glory and grace. This season is a special time to see that everything leads us directly to God, to realize that there is no one, nothing on earth that is not the presence of God for us. Give yourself the gift of this retreat as you prepare for the Birth of Jesus don t forget to invite a friend also. Facilitated by Mary Chajewski, Adult Faith Coordinator. PAC Retreat Room. Please register with the Parish Office. If you are interested, please register this week, or we will have to cancel.

ANGEL TREE: As we move into the season of Advent and preparation for Christmas, the Angel Trees are once again featured in the vestibule of the church. The Angel Tree is a wonderful way for us as a parish to carry out what we are taught in Catholic Social Teaching. Through the Angel Tree Project we can affirm the dignity of the poor and give them a helping hand. Jesus tells us, Whenever you did for the least of my brothers, you did for me. (Mt 25:40) How can we challenge ourselves to see Christ in the poor and vulnerable this Christmas? There are five kinds of angels this year, with a variety of ways we can reach out to the least among us. St. Vincent de Paul & Project Outreach Red Angels are requesting toys, building sets, balls, books, dolls, craft sets, and games for children from birth to 18 years. (Fry s gift cards, fast food certificates, and movie tickets for the teenagers are always in short supply.) Haiti Project White Angels are asking for cash donations that will be directed toward Joan Martin and our Haiti outreach project. Blessed Nuno Yellow Angels are reaching out to the Blessed Nuno Orphanage in Agua Prieta. Due to the difficulty in transporting and storing goods for the orphanage, they are asking for Gift Cards for Discount Stores. (Wal-Mart is the discount store at the border and nearest to the orphanage.) Casa Maria, Primavera Shelter, TIHAN, Poverello House, Stand Up for Kids and Sr. Jose Women s Shelter Green Angels are soliciting sweatshirts, hats, gloves, blankets, sleeping bags, toiletries, men s and women s underwear and socks, and children s sweatshirts and jackets. Especially needed men s and women s socks and underwear. (Women prefer low cut socks.) Respect Life Blue Angels are for mothers in need who are helped through agencies such as Reachout Women s Center and Merilac Lodge. These angels solicit diapers, formula, baby clothing, bottles, and blankets. Especially needed are gift cards to be used at discount stores (Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart) and baby formula (especially Simalac formula). Catholic Social Service Migration and Refugee Services Purple Angels are asking for items needed by for those setting up a home for the first time in this country. Especially needed are pans, sheets and towels. Items should not be wrapped and must be dropped off by December 13th. 4
