Fr. Larry s Corner of the Bulletin Now is that time of year when we begin to get ready for a brand new school year and one of the things that goes along with that is the creating of a safe environment for our children and young people. We don t need to go over the terrible tragedy and sin of the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests. While this certainly is a black eye for the Church, one of the good things to come out of this in recent years is the realization that we all both church and society in general must learn to prevent abuse, to recognize abuse and to report it. The United States Conference of Bishops established in 2002 a Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People which directed action in a number of areas to create a safe environment for the children in our care. This includes Safe Environment Training for all those who have contact with children, which Collection for July 22, 2018 includes priests and deacons, teachers and Collection.. $5901.00 counselors and aids, PSR teachers, youth leaders, Scout leaders, and so on. Our Archdiocese offers a lot of opportunities to get this training and the certification is good for three years. The Salesians also require their own version of training which must be renewed each year. Br. Jerry Meegan will offer this training (both Archdiocesan and Salesian) at Archbishop Shaw High School on Monday, August 13th at 7:00pm. Again, this is required for all persons who have contact with children in their activities here at St. John Bosco. Be sure to save the date and God bless!
Calling all Kids! We are looking for boys and girls, grades 4 through high school, to be ALTAR SERVERS. This is a very important ministry of helping the Priest and solemnizing the Mass on Weekends. No experience is necessary we will show you what to do. If you are interested, meet with Fr. Larry in the Church after the 9:00am Mass on September 2nd. OUR PARISH CHOIR Our Parish Choirs for children, youth, and adults are seeking new singers for the 2018 19 season. The choirs sing regularly at Weekend Masses September through the Feast of Corpus Christi. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, and begin next month. Of special significance this year is the celebration of our parish s 35th Anniversary in October, and the celebrations of Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter. Out choirs are open to everyone who enjoys an occasional musical challenge and who wants to sing for the greater glory of God. As well, a commitment to regular attendance at rehearsals and Masses is desired. For more information, please speak to the organist after any weekend Mass, or contact the church office at: Office@SaintJohnBoscoChurch.org
a r s 2 0 e 1 8 Y e v i f 1983-Celebrating Thirty Furnishing the Church While contractors worked feverishly to finish the building, Father Emil headed out to find furnishings for the new Church. He used the Salesian school in Bolzano as a home base while traveling the Dolomite Alps. In the shadows of the mountains was the DeMetz family of woodcarvers. Mr. DeMetz s father, now deceased, was the first one to make a statue of St. John Bosco upon his canonization in 1934. Mr. DeMetz went into his archives and came out with just a head. The head was a true likeness taken from a photograph of Don Bosco. Fr. Emil commissioned in lindenwood the statues of St. John Bosco, Mary Help of Christians, the Sacred Heart, St. Joseph, the Stations of the Cross and the Crucifix that hangs in the Sanctuary.
Journeying next to Florence, Italy, Fr. Emil selected the craftsman to make the altar out of bottecino marble. The size is seven feet long, five feet high and four feet wide. Also commissioned was a lecturn, baptismal font and holy water dispensaries for the entrance of the church. The monstrance came from Marymont College in Terrytown, NY. The monstrance was a gift to Fr. Grady from his sister, Sr. Margaret Christmas in 1920. Of note, this monstrance is today in the adoration chapel.
