Fr. Larry s Corner of the Bulletin I was thinking about today s Gospel reading. The thing that strikes me about it is the stark contrast between Jesus and his disciples. Jesus was trying to prepare them for the sufferings that he would have to go through and they were busy arguing about who among them is the greatest. They just did not understand what Jesus was trying to tell them, and St. Mark tells us they were afraid to question him. Jesus had a lot of big egos in his group. With that attitude they wouldn t make very good disciples, so he had to have a little talk with them. I can imagine Jesus seeing some children playing near by and motioning to one of them to come on over. Jesus used a child as an example of what he was looking for in his disciples. While the Jews certainly loved their kids, the kids had no social or legal standing in Jewish society. They were totally dependent on their father and Collection for September 9, 2018 other elders. If his disciples were to learn Collection.. $5856.00 from Jesus and imitate him, they would not be worried about who was the most important, but be more like Jesus in his attitude of service: If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Jesus himself came not to be served, but to serve. Of course Jesus is not only talking to his disciples, but to us who are disciples too. Perhaps we need to at times think less about ourselves and our needs and to be more sensitive to the needs of others. God bless!
