PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Thanks to Tony Gardner for his tribute to Don Dinneen, our long standing and much loved Rotarian member and to Tony Stenton who, with Tony G, provided wonderful photos of Don over many years. Thanks to everyone for their generosity as well. Our District Governor Wendy sent a message to us that reads Our thoughts go to all the Rotarians from Southport on the passing of Don Dinneen. We become such good friends with our fellow Rotarians so it is very sad for everyone when they leave us. We did enjoy the tales and photos from David R and Steve P about their extreme motor bike ride in the Himalayas- not something many of us would attempt to do. We are very glad they are back safe and sound! We were pleased to see Liz Hamilton join us again and we look forward to seeing her come often. Do remember that we now have to follow up with our guests and see if they want to come again. Our Facebook page is having more hits each week as Graham adds photos. You can access it on www.facebook.com/rotaryclubofsouthport Make sure you check the like icon. Please check the duty roster and make sure that you do what you have been assigned or make arrangements for someone to cover for you. Please note the invitation to the talk by Rob Borbidge on the Commonwealth Games on October 14 th. It is a good opportunity to invite partners and guests. I ll send the invitation to other Rotary Clubs as well. I hope we will have a good number of members and guests to hear Judge Clive Wall next Tuesday. He has had such a distinguished career and has much to tell us about the Southport Court. I am sorry that we can t join you as we have a family dinner with one of our sons from Singapore who is flying in for the presentation of Graham s AM that afternoon.. Marion Jones. Attendance and Secretary s Report: Members 20, Partner 1 and 1 guest. Sergeant: Tony Stenton Raffle Winner: Bill Connelly Heads/Tails Winner: Peter Overell Guest Speaker: David Randall and Steve Penfold presented us with their recent "Extreme Bike Ride" to India and Nepal. It was really a test of endurance and determination. Altitude sickness was the major cause of sickness and discomfort as they crossed three of the highest passes in the world, the highest being 5,500 metres. The food was bad, the road was bad, the amenities were bad and the conditions were extremely bad. That is why they call it, "Extreme Bike Ride." Fortunately, we are very glad that both of them have returned safely. Chair Peter Overell thanked them for their talk and photos and President Marion closed the meeting after reminding us that both she and Graham will be in Brisbane next Tuesday for Graham to receive his Queens Birthday award. Lambert's board decided to put these funds towards skydiving; the sport Garry's loved so much. Garry's favourite drop zone was Ramblers at Toogoolawah. A local designed and crafted a seat out of a single tree, to which a plaque was attached highlighting some of Garry's skydiving achievements. He was very well known in the skydiving community both in Australia and overseas. This seat will serve as a tribute to a great gentleman of the air. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Southport and friends who made this possible. Lea Rickwood. APOLOGIES - To Lea Rickwood, Club Service Director. However, accommodation is limited. Southport Rotary is a strong supporter of country District Conferences, and we usually make block bookings for accommodation. Next week I will be seeking the names of Rotarians who would like to have accommodation booked in motels or in the caravan park. PP Michael Irving Put this in your diary. The Royal Enfield They made it! Now for some air... One of the better roads Ablution time Farmer s crop The intrepid team of riders Thoughts for the Week How do biblical scholars know that King David rode a motorcycle? Because, in the bible, it says that David s Triumph could be heard throughout the land. What is the difference between a Harley Davidson and an old dog? The dog can get into the back of a ute by itself. Two Irishmen were in a pub, watching the Tour de France on TV. Seamus shook his head and said, Why do they do that? Do what, asked Mike. Go on them bikes for miles and miles up and down hills day after day in ice, rain and snow Why do they torture themselves? Rotator-9 September 2014 9
It s prestige and money, said Mick, You know the winner gets half a million Euro. Yes, I understand that, said Seamus, But why do the others all do it? What happened when the dog went to the flea circus? He stole the show. A teacher asked her students to use the word beans in a sentence. My father grows beans, said one girl. My mother cooks beans, said another. A third student spoke up, We are all human beans. Leaning on the bar the drover said, I am a man of simple tastes. I am happy with a bottle of whiskey, a tin of biscuits and a dog. Why the dog? asked a listener. Hell! Somebody has to eat the biscuits.
