Page 2 From the Desk of Father Raaser The word "etiquette" comes from the French word "estique," meaning to attach or stick a label, or small card providing requirements on how to behave properly at court. Another theory is that it came from behavior instructions written for a soldier s stay in camp. The noun "etiquette" describes the requirements of behaviors, the proper conduct that is established by a community for various occasions, including ceremonies, court, formal events and everyday life. Most of the etiquette experts agree that proper etiquette begins by showing respect for others, being honest and trustworthy, showing kindness and courtesy to others, to be polite. Our word, polite comes from the same root word for polished. If we are polite, or mannerly then we are a polished lady or gentleman. If a polite person has good manners, he or she is finished. In fact there are still institutions called, finishing schools. The opposite of polite is rude. Rude comes from the Latin, rudis meaning raw, crude, roots. It came to mean the unsophisticated, the roots or bottom of society. Etiquette and manners matter. Manners are a profound indicator of one s character. Treating another person with the respect and dignity that they deserve, simply because they are a fellow human being. Treating certain situations or places in a proper manner is important as well. We are to act differently at a funeral than a wedding; we are to have certain decorum when we enter into a courtroom, restaurant, someone s house, and a church. There has always been since the time of Solomon and the first Temple, a certain way to act when we enter the presence of God. God was very specific when it came to the building of the Temple, how it was to be constructed with certain materials and precious metals, how people were to act when they entered, during their visit and how they were to leave, which door to enter etc. They were to purify their hands when they first entered the temple. There were certain areas they could be in, and other areas they were forbidden. All to remind them where they were, and in whose Presence they were. In most areas of life, we have lost that sense of formality. Even at wakes and weddings the formality of dress and comportment is lessened. Dress down Fridays at business, lax dress codes in school, have caused us to lose the sense of dressing up for certain occasions. There is an old adage that states image governs attitude. Many companies have re-thought their policy of dress down Fridays, because of the lack of production due to the attitude of the employees. If we are dressed like a slob, then we tend to be sloppy about everything including out work. I have always marveled at our Baptist brothers and sisters. Many of them are poor people, but when it comes to Sunday service, they wear their Sunday best and they don t even have the Real Presence. We need to teach our children to be polite; maybe even some of our adults need to be re-polished. What was once considered a given teaching manners in family life, can no longer be expected. There is a certain etiquette when we come to Mass. Next week, I would like to mention some of the etiquette when entering into the Presence of God. And the actions all have a good reason!
