DECEMBER 9/10, 2017 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 2 THE THEME Today s readings urge us to prepare for and be open to God s presence in our lives. We have been taught that this presence is ongoing, yet it doesn t always seem so. We need to work to overcome fear and doubt, especially in challenging times, but the task need not be a frantic effort. These readings carry warnings and longings, but the operative words are comfort, tenderness and hope. We wait and prepare because of the promise. THE READINGS ISAIAH 40:1-5, 9-11: Comfort, give comfort to my people. 2PETER 3:8-14: The day of the Lord will be unexpected. MARK 1:1-8: The Baptist foretells the Messiah s coming. -SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16th, 2017 5:00 PM Mass Priest Fr. Manuel Lector E. Gerecke E.M. s C. Gallagher, L. Salamone, R. DECEMBER 9/10, 2017 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter s Desk Second Sunday of Advent Dear Parish Family: In our First Reading from the Prophet Isaiah, the Word of God addressed to the people has a twofold message: God directs an unknown group of people to bring comfort to his people, and then directs the whole people to prepare the way of the Lord!. This message of the Lord is to be proclaimed to all: The Lord will arrive in the image of a shepherd; he will feed his flock and gather the lambs in his bosom. Our Second Reading makes an alarming prediction: the day of the Lord will come like a thief. In rhetorical fashion, the author asks what sort of persons ought you to be? This piece of scripture suggests that a life of holiness and devotion is needed as we await a new heaven and a new earth. Today s Gospel, and that for next Sunday, present the preaching and mission of John the Baptist. The expectation of the people is high as they flock to hear the message of John, they do not want to miss it and they readily repent in anticipation. John s mission is to prepare the way to Jesus by calling people to acknowledge their sins and receive a baptism of repentance. Are we prepared to meet Jesus? My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Isaiah and the people in exile as well as John the Baptist, were parched from being in the desert. We can also find ourselves parched, not for water, but for love and forgiveness. God offers us that love and forgiveness through his Son, Jesus Christ. Let us use these next few weeks of Advent to prepare for the coming of Jesus, to open our hearts to all of his creation and to resolve to keep Jesus in our minds and hearts as we interact with others. God Bless You All, Fr. Peter STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection John the Baptist s call to repentance is echoed in the US Bishops pastoral letter on stewardship: Christians must beg God for the grace of conversion: the grace to know who they are, to whom they belong, how they are to live-the grace to repent and change and grow, the grace to become good disciples and stewards. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who strive to respond to God s grace through service to our parish and the wider community, especially our Parish Social Ministries and Senior Services.
