BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE Dr. John Walter Lambert was born in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana, August 25, 1861. He was the son of Daniel Gilbert Lambert and Lydia Bond Lambert, who moved to the state from South Carolina in 1800. He died March 28, 1932. Lambert attended medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans and graduated in 1887. He married Miss Julie Lee of St. Helena Parish on October 26, 1898, and moved shortly afterwards to Tangipahoa, La., to establish his medical practice. They had two daughters, Norma and Eunice Lambert. Dr. Lambert was a member of the Tangipahoa Baptist Church, serving as its clerk for many years, and was also owner of the J.W. Lambert mercantile and drug business. For a number of years he was mayor of Tangipahoa and is credited with having renewed the incorporation of the town under the administration of Governor John M. Parker, after it had lapsed for several years. He was the physician and surgeon of the Illinois Central Railroad at Tangipahoa for 33 years; former manager of the Tangipahoa Bank; a director of the Amite Bank and Trust Co.; a member of the Greensburg and Masonic lodge and the Royal Arch Masons of Amite, La.; chairman of the board of Commissioners, Camp Moore Confederate Cemetery; and a member of the parish and state medical societies. Page 4 of 10

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE School programs and class cards (1872-1899) of Tulane University Medical School constitute the early papers in the collection. Lambert's professional associations are documented by his appointments as chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Camp Moore Confederate Cemetery (1903); medical examiner for the Illinois Life Insurance Company (1905); local registrar of vital statistics (1918); mayor of the town of Tangipahoa (1923); and medical examiner for Pilot Life Insurance Company (1928). Letters, petitions, ordinances, and bills relate to Lambert's professional activities and appointments. Business papers are comprised of bills for merchandise, drug and tobacco licenses and certificates, and deposit slips of the Amite Bank and Trust Company. A letter (1924) and printed material (1899-1914) document Lambert's interest in the Tangipahoa Baptist Church and the Woman's Missionary Union of the Southern Baptist Convention. Ledgers (1886-1931) record patients' names and charges for medical examinations and drugs. Later volumes pertain chiefly to the J. W. Lambert mercantile and drug business and include 3 cashbooks (1899-1909); a checkbook (1933); 21 ledgers (1886-1931); 3 notebooks (1914-1931); and 7 record books (1902-1932). Page 5 of 10
