Shonna Ross, ATCS Staff Accountant to Resign in September It is with mixed emotion that we announce that Shonna Ross, the Staff Accountant of the ATCS, has resigned in order to accept a position as Chief Financial Officer of Technion Canada. The Technion: Israel Institute of Technology is a major educational institution in Israel with a major office in Toronto. While we are all very glad for Shonna, we are sorry to see her go. Shonna s efforts in making the Shul s financial reporting, record keeping and financial compliance reach a thoroughly professional level has been a great asset and tool reaching the level of the finest organizations and institutions in Canada. The transparency, responsiveness and clarity of all financial aspects of the Shul are due to her commitment and knowledge. Her eight years at the helm of our financial department have made a real difference in the ATCS. As Shonna will be missed by our staff and leadership on a professional level, we all wish her much success in her new position.
Sholosh Seudot Halacha Discussion Reuven gave a Torah class in the early evening to a group of professionals, who came to study with him after completing their day at work. Among the students was the local butcher, who finished work late and had to hurry straight to the class after work, without having time to go home first to shower and change his clothes. As a result, he brought with him the unbearable odor raw meat mixed with sweat. He was earnest in his studies, attending every single class without fail, and always sat right beside Reuven, in order to pay full attention to the lecture. Reuven, who was particularly sensitive to bad smells, found the butcher s presence unbearable, the smell bothered him so much that he could hardly teach. The other students considered mentioning it to the butcher, but they were afraid to hurt his feelings. Most likely, if anyone were to say anything to him about it, he would take sore offense and stop coming What then should be done? Is it worth it to offend a Jew in order to maintain a Torah shiur? Or perhaps it would be better to just close the shiur (and then maybe open a different shiur elsewhere) Student Needed to Organize Sefarim & Books The Shul is in need of a student (about age 13-18) to move and organize sefarim and books for a number of hours this summer. Please contact the rabbi at TCSRabbi@rogers.com or 416-876-0691 if you are interested.
Dear members & friends of the ATCS, Every year in the weeks before Rosh HaShanah, when Jewish families wake up from the easy days of summer to face new tuition payments, shul memberships, holiday meals and the reality that there are just more bills and obligations than money, I start to receive calls. Calls that mortgage payments are behind, taxes are owed, that there are enough funds for groceries. Calls from hard working, responsible people living in our community who are facing the reality that they may lose their home, they may not be able to serve nutritional meals to their children, that there are not enough "hand me downs" to go around. We are not talking about people who take exotic vacations, wear luxury labels or drive beautiful cars. These are people who get up every day, work hard, take care of their family and live right next door to any one of us. I realize that each year I write and ask you to include the TCS Rabbi's Tzdaka Fund in your pre-high Holiday Tzdaka giving. I also realize that each year I tell you stories of people in our neighborhood who cannot afford to put chicken on the table, buy school books or new shoes for the kids. Sadly, I have to do so again. No, they are not all the same people, some are, some not. Some people just don't make enough with both parents working and others face enormous dilemmas. There are single mothers, single fathers. There are children with a seriously ill parent who is unable to work. There are couples who have to put all of their efforts into an ill or specially-abled child. The stories can break your heart. They really can. I see the courage, the fortitude and the true faith of these people who continue to work, to struggle, to care and to give. So, once again, I am writing for your help. We know that people just like us, our friends, often our neighbours, the parents of the kids that go to school with your son or daughter are struggling to keep it together. They need our help and frankly, they need your help. We all complain how expensive everything is and there are few among us who are not truly feeling the pinch we are forced to carry- but most of us have the ability, large or small, to help those who are not making it. At this time when the Al-mighty looks to us to see how we are helping our brothers and sisters, a time that we stand before him and ask for a better year, a more successful, healthy and happy year allow me to ask you to open your heart and help our friends and neighbours get through these difficult times. A large or a small amount will make a difference. Kindly consider contributing to the ATCS Rabbi's Tzdaka Fund and 100% of what you give will be distributed in our community to help as described above. Checks to the Aish Thornhill Community Shul are welcome or you can feel free to email theshul@aish.com or call 905.764.1891 X 210 to make a donation. All donations will be receipted and 100% of the funds raised will be distributed for the holiday season without any deductions. Once again, thank you for your consideration of this important appeal and please allow me to wish you a very blessed, inspired and happy new year. With my appreciation, Rabbi Avram Rothman Senior Rabbi PS. Please remember, regardless of the amount donated, you DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
