25th Sunday in Ordinary Time Wis 2:12, 17-20 / Jas 3:16-4:3 / Mk 9:30-37 The Victory of the Servant In today s Gospel story, Jesus made a point of walking the road with just his disciples so that he could have an intimate conversation with them. Knowing their expectations for greatness, he explained for a second time that he was going to be betrayed, killed and then rise to new life. Each time that he was going to suffer, the promise that he would rise was an integral part of the statement. He warned the disciples that it would look like evil won, but he assured them that it wasn t true it wasn t even possible. Rather than a Passion prediction, we could do better to call this a Resurrection prophecy. When words were not enough, Jesus decided to shock them with a sign. He picked up a child and said in effect: You want to be important? Here s what important looks like! Which of the disciples had to move over to make room for the new, young star of Jesus show? In reality he wanted them all to move over all the way to last place with him. Like the child, he trusted in his Father, and like his Father, he watched out for the little ones. Jesus was focused on living in God s promised future while his disciples were caught in the milieu of what they considered probable. The only way to really understand what he was saying was to do what he did, to trust in God as he did. One way to start was by learning to be a servant: servants of God and servants of God s little ones. Mary McGlone, CSJ/Celebration September 29 Saturday 5:00 pm *C. Sturtevant, P. THERE IS A PARENT MEETING ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 AT 9:15 IN THE FIRESIDE ROOM ST. CYRIL CONFIRMATION PROGRAM We welcome our youth to our Confirmation Program. Confirmation is a new beginning in one s life of full participation and responsibility in the Catholic Church. As one of the Sacraments of Initiation, it is an amazing sign of God s love and presence in our lives. The Holy Spirit will help you become a more mature follower of Christ as you walk in His footsteps. Students must be high school age, and have participated in the previous year of Religious Education here, or at a Catholic School or Church to register for Confirmation. Those in the program will attend classes about Confirmation and their faith life, be a member of our High School Youth Group, and come to Mass weekly. There is also a weekend retreat some time during the year. Teens should do service hours in the community or here at church. Catholic Baptism certificates must be included in your registration materials with your payment for youth group unless your teen was baptized here at St. Cyril. We are having a Confirmation Parent Meeting on Sunday, October 7th at 11:45 AM in the Fireside Room to cover the requirements and schedule for the year. September 23, 2018 Page 6

40 DAYS FOR LIFE BEGINS SEPT 26 - NOV 4 40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion. The 40-DAY CAMPAIGN tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities... and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ s resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge. There are 2 locations locally to participate, please login to; https://40daysforlife.com/and find more information about our activities. St Cyril s ProLife Committee. EXCITING RECTORY NEWS! For the past 6 years we have been renters. Through our fundraising and the diligent efforts of the Rectory Committee, Cathy Sturtevant & Greg VanderZanden, we are now HOME OWNERS!! We purchased a 5 year old home in Villebois for $369,000, not including closing costs and necessary repairs. With this purchase it is still very important to fulfill our fundraising goal of $250,000. These funds are essential to the repairs and maintenance of the Rectory. Move-in is scheduled for late October with an Open House on October 14th, for those interested in seeing the new Rectory.
