It takes some getting used to! Peter, as a good friend, wants to protect Jesus from the cross he is announcing. Yet Jesus doesnʼt want protection from the will of the Father ratherhe wantssupport. He invites Peter to change his mentality. Jesus knew what was coming; he must suffer and be rejected. Suffering and rejection are not absolute evils. Our goal in life canʼt be to avoid suffering and to be accepted by everyone. If we pursue good and follow Jesus, we will also experience rejection. When Jesus tells us that following him means taking up our cross, it shouldnʼt surprise us when a cross is planted in our path with a sign saying, Pick me up. In the first reading, the prophet says he opened his ear and didnʼt rebel. When the consequences of this faith were abuse and rejection, he didnʼt shield his body and face. He could do so because, like Jesus, he was rooted in love and not fear. He didnʼt fear their arguments, ideas, and insults. He didnʼt fear what they could do to his body, for they couldnʼt touch his soul, his heart, his freedom. When we know we are loved, and are following what is right, we have a confidence and a strength that the world knows not. It is a different way of seeing, hearing, and judging. It is of a higher order, a deeper source, and brings total peace. And it takes some getting used to! Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

September 16, 2018 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 50:4c-9a Psalm 116 James 2:14-18 Mark 8:27-35 Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word: Today s readings are challenging. Isaiah accepts God s call to prophecy, but he suffers terribly at the hands of his persecutors. Saint James insists that Christians are obligated to put their faith into action, clothing and feeding the needy. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. As we listen to the readings, let us reflect on how we take up our cross and put our faith into action. Question of the Week: How am I denying myself? What is the cross I am bearing at this point in my life?
