My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God. As Your people, we pray that Your love will unite us into a fellowship of discovery. Cleanse us of everything that would sap our strength for togetherness. Unravel the knots in our spirits. Cleanse the error of our minds. Free us from the bondage of our negative imaginations. Break down the barriers that sometimes keep us apart and cause us to drift along without a dream. TIME OF PRAYER
[Silent Prayer] As we go from here-- Explode in us new possibilities for service. Kindle within us the fires of Your compassion so that we may not wait too long to learn to love. May we be a people with loving purposes-- Reaching out... Breaking walls... Building bridges... Let us be Your alleluia in a joyless, fragmented world. In the name of our Lord, we pray, Amen. Champ Traylor (Hymns for the Family of God) Prayers of the People Rev. Don Meekhof Mike Helland Offertory Prayer Forbid it, Lord, that our roots become too firmly attached to this earth, that we should fall in love with things... Then shall we see all of life in its true perspective. Then shall we not fall in love with the things of time, but come to love the things that endure. Then shall we be saved from the tyranny of possessions which we have no leisure to enjoy, of property whose care becomes a burden. Give us, we pray, the courage to simplify our lives... So help us, O God, to live and not merely to exist, that we may have joy in our work. In Thy name, who alone can give us moderation and balance and zest for living, we pray. Amen. --Peter Marshall ("Hymns for the Family of God") OFFERING OF OURSELVES & OUR GIFTS *Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below Praise him above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Offertory Land of Rest Organ Appalachian Tune OLD TESTAMENT READING Cathy Roginski Psalm 127:1 4 (NIV) 1 Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. 2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat for he grants sleep to those he loves. 3 Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. 4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one s youth. NEW TESTAMENT READING Matthew 7:24 29 (NIV) 24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. 28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law. Elvey * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In the pulpit today: Sam Palpant was born in Lansing, Michigan and was born again into Christ's family in a 4th grade Sunday school class in Woodland Park, Colorado. In 1970 he graduated from Penn State, married Judy and headed to Philadelphia and Temple Medical School. After a residency in Tucson, Arizona, he and his family moved to Kenya where he served in a Quaker mission hospital for nearly 6 years. There, he learned to trust God with his faith questions. In 1985 Scott Edminster and Joel Crosby helped recruit Sam to come from Kenya to Spokane to work with Internal Medicine residents and join the Knox family. When he can, Sam relishes time with family, reads and writes poetry, plays and enjoys music, and bird watches out his dining room window.
