Old Greenwich, THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL United Church Connecticut CHURCH OF GREENWICH of Christ Founded in 1665 Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost Reformation Sunday 31 October 2010 10 o clock in the morning

W elcome to this Service of Worship at First Congregational Church. Today is Reformation Sunday and we welcome our new Director of Music, Dr. Craig Scott Symons. Please join us following worship for a special reception to welcome Craig into our church family. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP *All who are able please stand Seating of latecomers PRELUDE Prelude in A minor Dr. Craig Scott Symons, organ Johann Sebastian Bach CALL TO COMMUNITY Please sign and pass the red book. MISSION TEAM OPPORTUNITY Donna Tagliarino PRAISING GOD CALL TO WORSHIP Dr. David D. Young * OPENING HYMN AND PROCESSION Praise to the Living God New Century (black) Hymnal 8 OPENING PRAYER (In Unison) Your purposes touch our lives at the growing edge O God of encouragement. Be present to us as a faith community in this brief hour of growth and stewardship, that we might be equipped for faithful living in the company of Jesus Christ. Amen.

CALL TO CONFESSION CONFESSING TO GOD PRAYER OF CONFESSION Have we been selfish? Make us generous, Lord. Have we been wasteful? Show us how to be good stewards. Have we been foolish? Show us a wiser way. Have we cheated others in order to get ahead? Move us to make retribution. Have we made money the number one thing in our lives? Set our priorities straight. Lord, sometimes we are confused and have doubts about life. Show us how to act, and teach us what is really important in life. Often enough we do turn from your ways, denying and thwarting your love at work in other people, and in our families and even deeply at work in ourselves. Forgive us this day, O God, and restore us to right relationships, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray, LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE Congregational Response Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

CHIDREN S MESSAGE Rosemary Lamie SONG Jesus Loves Me As the song begins, the Church School children and teachers will leave for their classrooms. Children in second grade and older will leave independently. Children in kindergarten and first grade will meet their teachers at the back of the Meetinghouse (narthex) and will go to their classrooms as a group. It is not necessary for parents to accompany their children to the classroom because there are many Hall Helpers to guide anyone who needs help. HEARING GOD'S WORD FIRST LESSON Charlie Baird I Psalms 145: 1-5, 17-21 will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name for ever and ever. Every day I will bless you, and praise your name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. On the glorious splendour of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. The Lord is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfils the desire of all who fear him; he also hears their cry, and saves them. The Lord watches over all who love him,

but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever. SCRIPTURE ANTHEM How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place SECOND LESSON The Chancel Choir Johannes Brahms Pat Larrabee I Haggai 2:1-2:9 n the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. For thus says the Lord of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendour, says the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of hosts. The latter splendour of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the Lord of hosts. * HYMN Take My Life and Let It Be Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 404 SERMON Tipping Won t Cut It Dr. David D. Young (Third in a Stewardship Series: Getting It Right )

RESPONDING TO GOD A PERSONAL AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Dana Low *Gloria New Century (black) Hymnal 754 Glory to God the Creator, and to the Christ, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. CALL TO PASTORAL PRAYER Rev. Avery C. Manchester PASTORAL PRAYER AND QUIET MEDITATION CALL TO OFFERING OFFERTORY ANTHEM The Song Is Faith The Chancel Choir Alfred Fedak *Doxology New Century (black) Hymnal 776 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all creatures here below; Praise Holy Spirit, Comforter; One God, Triune, whom we adore. Amen. Amen. *PRAYER OF DEDICATION GOING FORTH TO SERVE GOD *CLOSING HYMN AND PROCESSION God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending New Century (black) Hymnal 565 *CLOSING SENTENCES Leader: When one has great gifts, what answer to the meaning of existence should one require beyond the right to exercise them? People: If we Christians lived as we should, non-believers would be more astonished at our lives than at miracles.

Leader: Friends, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone that lives is born of God, and knows God. People: It is love alone whereby we are turned to God, and changed into the form of God, whereby we cleave to God, and are made one with God. St. John / Martin Luther / W.H.Auden / John Chrysostom *BENEDICTION *BENEDICTION RESPONSE POSTLUDE Final from Symphony #1 Alexandre Guilmant The First Congregational Church of Greenwich declares itself to be open and affirming; open to all for participation, membership, leadership and employment, and affirming of all who wish to join us as children of God. Calendar TODAY Church School In Church School classes today, our children will learn about Solomon's wisdom through the bible story found in 1 Kings 3. Different ages look at these passages in an age appropriate way but they all will hear that it is good to pray to God for wisdom to know the difference between right and wrong.
