Honor your Father & your Mother The Promise Honoring involves obedience, in this case specifically of parents. During our discussion of the 3rd commandment we talked how not to take the Lord s name in vain. We honor God by loving him, by obeying his commands. If we fail, life is shorter.
Honor your Father & your Mother The Promise If we fail to obey the Commands of God, taught to us by our parents Proverbs 1:8-18 8 Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, 9 for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck. 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. 11 If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason; 12 like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; 13 we shall find all precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder; 14 throw in your lot among us; we will all have one purse"-- 15 my son, do not walk in the way with them; hold back your foot from their paths, 16 for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. 17 For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird, 18 but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives. Proverbs 2:16-18 16 So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words, 17 who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God; 18 for her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed; 19 none who go to her come back, nor do they regain the paths of life. Proverbs 10:21 21 The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense. Proverbs 16:22 Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly.

5th Commandment (continued) Mar 4th, 2007
5th commandment Recap Recap God has given us things on earth that are images, or reflections, of things in heaven Mother s are specifically mentioned and equal in their need to be honored There is no timeframe on when honoring should stop There is the specific and special promise of long life The notion of fatherhood, or motherhood, is equated to those in authority over us, those placed above by God, to teach us, guide us... We have folks in authority over us that may be very wrong in many ways: parents that are not what God wants them to be a boss, presidents, dictators, etc, etc...
A father to the fatherless We all have a father regardless of our circumstances Psalm 27:8-11 8 You have said, "Seek my face." My heart says to you, "Your face, LORD, do I seek." 9 Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! 10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in. 11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. Psalm 68:4-6 4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the LORD; exult before him! 5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. 6 God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. Does this excuse us from honoring the father/mother God has given us?
Authority over us that isn t right Pharaoh & Moses King Saul & David Pilate over Jesus
How do we show Honor? What does honor look like? and what does honor look like when it s for a Godless person How do we show honor, obedience, and respect to our government? Does Romans 13 change anything? 1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4 For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
