Page 2 We Proclaim the Good News February 26, 2017 Don t worry about... what you will eat or drink... what you will wear... Do not worry about tomorrow (Matthew 6:25, 34). With budgets to balance and bills to pay, we might reply, Somebody has to! But to clarify our perspective on life s worries, Jesus points to the birds. For them God provides, though not endowing them with human intelligence. As for the wild flowers, God arrays them in beauty, though not with our destiny eternal life. Forsaken? Forgotten? Unthinkable, replies God, who cherishes us, says Isaiah, with a mother s tenderness for the child of her womb. Amen! we acclaim to seal our every prayer. Mammon derives from that same root, which means that in which I place my trust. But mammon signifies material possessions, tangible assets. Jesus bids us decide where we will place our trust: in God, unfailing rock and tender parent; or mammon, which unless harnessed to service and sharing will eventually enslave us to greed and consume us with worry. In such service lies Jesus solution to our achieving the balance between trustful confidence in God and practical provision for human needs. Eat, drink, wear: heard now, just before Lent, those needs will echo again in the Last Judgment Gospel that ends the liturgical year: I was hungry, thirsty, naked. What you did, or failed to do, for the least, you did, or failed to do, for me (cf. Matthew 25:35, 36, 40, 45). We are servants and stewards, Paul reminds us. Let us then provide whatever neighbor or stranger needs, and so alleviate the worry of others, even as we serve the Lord whose image they bear. J.S. Paluch FR. GÉRARD S CORNER Fr. The publication, in November 1964, of the Decree on Ecumenism set in motion official dialogue between Catholics and Lutherans. Ongoing discussions over the last fifty years have produced ground-breaking documents aimed at seeking theological common ground and recognizing that what unites us is far greater than what divides us. Coming together as sisters and brothers, whether Lutheran or Catholic, we will join our hearts in prayer, celebrating our oneness in God and reflecting on our journey from conflict to communion, our shared journey to God. The Rev. R. Guy Erwin, Ph.D. Bishop, Southwest California Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America The Rev. Kevin Rettig Pastor, St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church No reservation necessary for the prayer service.

DID YOU KNOW? Transportation safety is key... The safety of your children is often entrusted to other drivers bus drivers, family members, friends parents, coaches and parents should be aware of who is in charge of transportation. Although you cannot control everything, you can teach your children how to ride in another person s vehicle. Teach kids to always wear seatbelts, and avoid distracting behavior that will take the driver s attention away from the road. Ask your school about their policies and the requirements for those who may be in charge of transportation. Page 8 We Proclaim the Good News February 26, 2017 RENEWAL FOR ALL An Ecumenical Commemoration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church March 5 and March 8, 2017 The Reformation: 500 Years of Renewal for All Sunday, March 5 3:30 5:00 p.m. Five hundred years ago, on October 31, 1517, German Augustinian monk Martin Luther famously nailed to the church door his 95 Theses, a document that challenged certain teachings, practices, and abuses of the Church in his day. Thus began decades of religious, political, intellectual, and cultural upheaval that splintered Europe into various churches, sects, and factions. This period of unprecedented change, commonly known as the Reformation, gave birth to various independent Protestant Churches, but was also the catalyst for some muchneeded self-examination, renewal, and change in the Catholic Church itself. The speakers will examine the complex historical and theological causes, the ideas and ideals of the Protestant reformers, and the Catholic response. From a distance of 500 years, we look back on the Reformation, its roots and consequences, and its meaning today in the ecumenical age. The Rev.
