Case Study Case Study John s business is struggling. His associates in other parts of the country faced similar challenges but hired a consultant to help them move ahead. They now seem to be doing well, but John still cannot bring himself to seek outside help. He feels he must come up with the answers. What are some parallels between John s hesitancy and our lack of seeking help with our spiritual journeys? Case Study John s business is struggling. Joshua 23:6-11 (From the Message Bible) 6-8 Now, stay strong and steady. Obediently do everything written in the Book of The Revelation of Moses don t miss a detail. Don t get mixed up with the nations that are still around. Don t so much as speak the names of their gods or swear by them. And by all means don t worship or pray to them. Hold tight to GOD, your God, just as you ve done up to now. 9-10 GOD has driven out superpower nations before you. And up to now, no one has been able to stand up to you. Think of it one of you, singlehandedly, putting a thousand on the run! Because GOD is GOD, your God. Because he fights for you, just as he promised you. 11 Now, vigilantly guard your souls: Love GOD, your God. Joshua 23:6-11 (From the Message Bible) 6-8 Now, stay strong and steady. Case Study Case Study You have been invited to help a church that is in great distress. Sunday morning attendance is down to twenty people. Financial contributions have dried up. There are almost no active ministry programs in the church. A bit of background: Fifteen years ago, the church decided, by a slim majority of votes, to remove all references to Jesus Christ from the church s mission statement. To create a more inclusive environment, a former pastor removed all of the church s old hymnals and introduced more neutral songs into the worship service. In almost every sermon, the current pastor tells the congregation that it matters not what they believe, it only matters that they love people and serve their community. As a group, develop action steps to restore the health of the church and explain the underlying reasons for your suggestions. Quotes about Faith in God Creationists make it sound like a theory is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night. Isaac Asimov I don t believe in God. My god is patriotism. Teach a man to be a good citizen and you have solved the problem of life. Andrew Carnegie All thinking men are atheists. Ernest Hemingway Faith means not wanting to know what is true. Friedrich Nietzsche The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. George Bernard Shaw I believe in God, only I spell it Nature. Frank Lloyd Wright The whole [religion] thing is so patently infantile, so foreign to reality, that to anyone with a friendly attitude to humanity it is painful to think that the great majority of mortals will never be able to rise above this view of life. Sigmund Freud Not only is there no god, but try getting a plumber on weekends. Woody Allen It s an incredible con job when you think about it, to believe something now in exchange for something after death. Even corporations with their reward systems don t try to make it posthumous. Gloria Steinem Item Eight, For the Easter Lesson, Discovery Plan Step 1, Quotes about Faith in God

Statements about Beliefs Religion is a crutch. This life is all there is; everything ends at death. If God were real, why would he make such a messed-up world? If there is a hell, I ll be there partying with my friends. Christianity appeals to people too lazy to think for themselves. There are many ways to God. It shouldn t matter what you believe, as long as you live according to your convictions. Item Nine, For the Easter Lesson, Discussion Plan Step 1, Statements about Beliefs
