TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER? The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. James 3:18 We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as the good guys. We don t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don t like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don t like? TODAY S READINGS First Reading The wicked say: With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test (Wisdom 2:12, 17-20). Psalm The Lord upholds my life (Psalm 54). Second Reading The wisdom from above is full of mercy and good fruits (James 3:16 4:3). Gospel Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me (Mark 9:30-37). The Altar Flowers were donated With grateful appreciation to our PREP Catechists SAINTS MICHAEL, GABRIEL, AND RAPHAEL FEAST DAY SEPTEMBER 29 th On September 29 th, the Church remembers and honors the greatest of the angels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, for the role they play in salvation history. The word angel comes from the Hebrew word for messenger. Since creation, they have appeared as messengers of God, announcing God s saving plan, and helping to achieve it. Each of the archangels performs a different mission in Scripture: Michael protects; Gabriel announces; Raphael guides. In Hebrew, the name Michael means, Who is like God. The Archangel Michael s will is focused, immovable, and entirely driven toward accomplishing goodness. He is the Prince of the Heavenly Host of Angels and is invoked by Christians in their fight against temptation and the devil. He is the protector of souls and wields his powerful sword of truth and love against those who wish to do us harm. St. John Paul II has said, The battle against the devil is the principal task of St. Michael the Archangel. Gabriel means, God is my strength. He was sent from God to Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph and the virgin s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you (Lk 1:27-28). She was greatly troubled by his greeting. The angel Gabriel said, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God (Lk 1:30). Gabriel is mentioned two other times in scripture; he appeared to Daniel to explain a vision, and to announce the birth of John the Baptist. Raphael means, God has healed. We know of Raphael from the Book of Tobit, where the angel traveled with the young Tobias as a healer and companion. The meaning of Raphael s name reflects the fact that he touched Tobit s eyes and brought sight from blindness. While Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are the greatest of the angels, St. Bernard wrote of all angels, including our guardian angels, we should be filled with respect for the presence of angels, devotion because of their loving service, and confidence because of their protection. And, so the angels are here; they are at your side, they are with you, present on your behalf. They are here to protect you and to serve you. But, even if it is God who has given them this charge, we must nonetheless be grateful to them for the great love with which they obey and come to help us in our great need. Sent from the hands of God, these powerful messengers bring promises of love and of hope. The Tabernacle Candle will burn before the Blessed Sacrament the week of September 23 In Loving Memory of Peter O Brien From Susan O Brien & Family For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to heal We pray for God s tender mercy and loving kindness upon all of our loved ones who have experienced health issues.
