ACTIVITY 1 2 s/3 s only Food Hunt Have the children pick up play bread and plush fish and place in the baskets. What You Need: Play bread (20) and plush fish (20), and two baskets Before the Activity: Spread the play bread and plush fish all over the floor in the activity area. Place the baskets in the middle of the area next to a volunteer to ensure they are not picked up by the children. During the Activity: Challenge the children to go around the room and pick up all the bread and fish and place them in the baskets. Continue the activity until all of the food has been picked up. After the Activity: Repeat the activity several times and challenge the children to see if they can pick up the fish and bread at a faster pace. (For older children: Challenge the children to sort the fish and bread into two separate baskets.) Before the Activity: There is food EVERYWHERE! (Hold out arms and spin around.) Today in our lesson we learned that Jesus can do hard things. He made sure that all the people had fish and bread to eat when they were hungry. I see a lot of fish and bread on the floor. Can you help me pick up all the fish and bread and place it in these two baskets? During the Activity: Let s get started. (Allow the children to do the activity.) Great job! ACTIVITY 2 2 s/3 s only 2 and 5 Move Have the children complete different movements two times and then five times. What You Need: No supplies needed During the Activity: Gather the children in an open area of the room. Encourage the children to jump two times. Then guide them to jump five times. Repeat with the following movements below in increments of two and five. (Ex: Hop two times. Now hop five times. ) Movements: High knees March Clap Hug a friend Pat your head Slide (two times this way; five times the other way) Jumping jacks Blink Knee bends (hands on hips, bend up and down) Tap your feet (one foot two times; then the other five times) Before the Activity: Today we learned that Jesus fed a huge crowd of people with just two fish and five loaves of bread. During the Activity: Let s practice those numbers as we move. First, jump two times. (Pause.) Now jump five times. (Pause.) Great job, everyone! (Repeat with other movements.) February Weeks 1 and 2 ACTIVITY 3 - All Pass the Bread Memory Verse Children will practice their memory verse while playing a game similar to Hot Potato but with toy bread instead of a potato. What You Need: Large Toy Bread Before the Activity: Gather the children in an open area of the room and direct them to sit down in a circle close to one another. Say the verse with the children. During the Activity: Pass the bread around the circle, randomly saying, STOP, each round. When you say, STOP, the child holding the bread will move to the center of the circle and say this month s memory verse with the volunteers for the first round. When you finish saying the verse, you will start the game again but this time when you say stop, child #1 (who remained in the center of the circle) and child #2 will say the memory verse together with the volunteers. Continue passing, calling STOP, and repeating this month s memory verse until all the children are inside the circle and saying the memory verse together. Before the Activity: Let s practice our Memory Verse for this month. Can you please say it with me? (Pause.) With God all things are possible, Matthew 19:26. Awesome! Let s try it again! Children will complete a science experiment with denture tablets and water. **Be sure to list the items you will be using today on the Allergy Alert Poster and post it at the door to your room. (NOTE: Never leave children unattended around water and denture tablets!!!) What You Need: Allergy Alert Poster on white cardstock; denture tablets and a clear plastic cup filled 2/3 full of water Before the Activity: Hang Allergy Alert Poster on the door. Place the denture tablets and the cup of water in the center of the table. During the Activity: Ask the children what they think might happen if you drop one of the tablets into the water. Listen to a few predictions and then remove one tablet from its wrapper and drop it into the water. After the Activity: Pour out all the water, throw away the trash, and set containers aside to dry. Before the Activity: Today I want to do a fun experiment. I think you ll be really surprised. Get ready to watch this! During the Activity: What do you think will happen if I drop this tablet into this cup of water? (Take a few predictions.) Watch this! After the Activity: Did you expect that tablet to fizz? ACTIVITY 5 4 s/5 s only Loaves and Fish Relay Children will compete in a relay race where they collect plush fish and toy bread. What You Need: Plush toy fish, toy bread, a large basket and masking tape Before the Activity: Mark two lines on the floor with tape where you will have the starting line. Set the baskets on the floor at the opposite end about 10 feet away. Fill the basket with fish and bread. You will need either a fish or bread for each child. During the Activity: Divide the children into two teams and have the teams line up in a single file line behind the masking tape. When you say, Go! have the first child in each line go the basket and grab a fish or bread and bring it back to their team and sit at the back on the line. Continue with the activity until every child in line has had a turn and the baskets are empty. During the Activity: There are bread and fish in these baskets. (Point.) When I say, Go, the first person in line will walk fast to their basket and grab either a fish or bread and bring it back with them. When you have your fish or bread, go to the back of the line and sit down. Are you ready? (Pause.) (Do activity.) Great job! (Additional option: have the children walk back with the bread or fish on their head, without using their hands, on their foot, etc.) After the Activity: That was fun, friends! CRAFT WEEK 1 Full Plate What You Need: Plate Activity Page on white cardstock, small paper plates, crayons, and glue sticks During the Activity: Give each child a plate and a cutout. Allow children to color the cutout. Help the children glue the cutout onto the middle of the plate. After the Activity: Allow the plates to dry. Before the Activity: We heard a wonderful Bible lesson today. Jesus made food for 5,000 people out of only two fish and five loaves of bread. WOW! During the Activity: Let s make a plate with the fish and bread on it. You can use it to tell others all about our Bible lesson. (Do activity.) After the Activity: AWESOME! You have the perfect thing to tell people all about our Bible lesson today. Jesus was AMAZING! He fed so many people with only two fish and five loaves of bread. Jesus can do ANYTHING! CRAFT WEEK 2 Dotted Loaves and Fish What You Need: Dotted Verse Activity Page on white cardstock, and dot markers During the Activity: Say the memory verse with the children. Give the children the dot markers and encourage them to use them to color the bread and fish on the Activity Page. After the Activity: Say the memory verse with the children again. Before the Activity: Jesus turned two fish and five loaves of bread into enough food for 5,000 people! Jesus is amazing! During the Activity: (Give each child an Activity Page.) There are loaves and fishes on our page today. (Point.) The words of our memory verse are in the loaves and fishes. Use the dot markers to color the loaves and fish. (Do activity.) After the Activity: You did a great job painting fish and loaves with your dot markers. Let s say our memory verse together one more time: With God all things are possible, Matthew 19:26. Perfect! SMALL GROUP Small Group Time What you Need: Parent Take Home Card, Playdoh, People Cookie Cutters, Rolling Pins, and Sticker Roll SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): It s Small Group time! Today we re going to chomp a path all the way to our small group spot, like we re taking bites out of a big piece of pizza. Just do your mouth like this (big chomp) and follow me. (Take big bites of air as you lead the children to your Small Group spot.) I like being silly with you. We just ate a path to our Small Group spot. (Laugh.) Now let s sit down so we can talk about our lesson today. One, two, three, sit down with me! Jesus did something in our lesson today that would have been way too hard for us to do. Do you remember what He did? (Pause.) Yes! He fed over 5,000 hungry people with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. There was even food left over! Wow! Jesus can do anything! Who can do anything? CHILDREN and SGL: Jesus can do anything! SGL: Now it s time to pray. Let s sit down together. Today we are going to make a list of our favorite foods since our story was about Jesus feeding so many people. When we pray we can use our list to thank God for giving us so many yummy things to eat. Sound good? (Pause.) I think so too! Get ready! When I say your name, tell me one of your favorite foods.
