We recognize our responsibility to give worship to God, reverence to all people, respect to all creation and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Acknowledging our own brokenness and our need to hope, we seek to be a forgiving and welcoming community committed to service by the sharing of life and love with all, and working together to make peace and justice a reality in our world. Strengthened by the presence of God in our lives, we undertake all of this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen. Alleluia!

Holy Spirit Catholic Church January 14, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?... Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit?... Glorify God in your body. Often we pay more attention to what our culture says about our body than what the Gospel says. It seems to me that our culture takes two extreme attitudes towards our bodies. We either adore bodies or we abuse them. These are the extremes but they tell us a lot about our overall attitudes. One important area to look at is the area of respect for our body and for the bodies of others. Two important aspects of this are violence and sexuality. Violence against another person s body is forbidden by our Christian view of the body. It is not to be tolerated either in marriage or in any other relationship. When a husband and wife promise to love each other in good times and in bad, they are not promising that they will stay in a situation which their physical well-being is threatened. Let s put aside once and for all the erroneous notion that the Catholic Church is asking married people to stay in a situation of violence because of their marriage vows. It is because we are temples of the Holy Spirit and members of Christ s body that we are asked to respect the sexual meaning of the body and not to use our bodies as a bribe to win over another person or to satisfy our passing desires. Nor are we to make the sign through the marriage act that we are married, when in fact we are not. The use of our sexuality in its fullest physical expression is to express the reality of a permanently committed relationship. We should not be lying by saying something with our bodies that we don t mean to say. Inside of marriage we must always be respectful of the other person and not take as our own the old notion that we have a right over the body of our partner. This old notion was based on a justice model of marriage and so we talked about the rights of each partner. But marriage is defined as a covenantal relationship. This implies partnership and mutuality. Here the body can be a most beautiful instrument of loving affection, but only if it is respected at all times. Our faith asks us neither to hate nor adore our bodies. They are given to us by God. They are parts of the body of Christ and temples of the Holy Spirit. May we praise God through our care and respect for our bodies and those of each other. Please Pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life!
