PRELUDE COME TO BELIEVE, COME TO BELONG PO BOX 1643-221 E LAKELAND DR. - ALLYN, WA 98524-360.275.3390 www.northbaylutheran.org WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Janice McIntosh-Schonberg CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen 2

KYRIE 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Lord God, you showed your glory and led many to faith by the works of your Son. As he brought gladness and healing to his people, grant us these same gifts and lead us also to perfect faith in him, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen FIRST READING 1 Samuel 3:1-10 1 The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. 2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, Here I am. 5 And he ran to Eli and said, Here I am; you called me. But Eli said, I did not call; go back and lie down. So he went and lay down. 6 Again the LORD called, Samuel! And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, Here I am; you called me. My son, Eli said, I did not call; go back and lie down. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. 8 The LORD called Samuel a third time, and Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, Here I am; you called me. Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, Samuel! Samuel! Then Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

PSALM Psalm 139:1-10 1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. 3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. 7 Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 6:11-20 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 12 I have the right to do anything, you say but not everything is beneficial. I have the right to do anything but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both. The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, The two will become one flesh. 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. 6

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION 7

GOSPEL John 1:43-51 The holy gospel according to St John, the 1st chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Following the reading The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Chaplain Mike Greenwalt HYMN OF DAY Here I Am, Lord ELW 574 8

APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us pray to the Lord God for the holy catholic Church, for the world, and for those in need. a brief silence Dear God, heavenly Father, You have searched us and have known our thoughts and ways. Nowhere can we go that is hidden from You; and, wherever we are, Your hand leads and holds us. We give You thanks for Your guidance and protection in all places and circumstances. Lord, in your mercy, 9

By Your Holy Spirit, inspire Your Church ever to be faithful to the true teaching and give us, Your people, whom You have called to serve You, the willingness to invite those who have not responded to Your Word to come and see the Christ. Lord, in your mercy, Keep us, who are members of Christ, pure in body and soul and help us to remember that each of us is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Give strength to husbands and wives so that they may remain faithful to their marriage vows, and give the unmarried faithful friends and fullness of joy in their lives. Lord, in your mercy, Guide all who govern so that they may not be self-serving but attend to the needs of the people. Give insight and discernment to the President and Congress, so that they may do what is right in Your eyes, not in their own. Lord, in your mercy Bring to all the nations of the earth peace at home and abroad, and grant to their leaders a thirst for justice. Lord, in your mercy, Heavenly Father, we beseech You to give healing, comfort, and aid to those who are sick in mind, body, or soul; destitute; or in any way afflicted, especially those we lift up in prayer to You (Pause for spoken and silent prayers...). Lord, in your mercy, We ask You to continue to provide all that we need to live through the dedication of those who serve in many different callings. Help us to remember to give thanks to You for their dedicated service. Lord, in your mercy. Console those who mourn the loss of loved ones and give confidence in Your promises of eternal life to those who believe in Christ. Lord, in your mercy. Dear Lord, You show Your steadfast love and mercy to Your people. Hear our prayers and answer them according to Your holy purpose; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and rules with You now and forever. Amen. 10
